Last Saturday, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Departments of Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery hosted the second ANA Patient Education Event in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. David Haynes welcomed the crowd to Vanderbilt. Cathey Norton, spoke about the value of vestibular rehabilitation both before and after acoustic neuroma treatment, and Dr. Albert Attia explained how radiosurgery or radiotherapy work to treat AN tumors.
Next, the morning panel, consisting of Dr. Haynes, Dr. Reid Thompson, Dr. Attia and Dr. Marc Bennett, moderated by Dr. Alejandro Rivas reviewed case studies to illustrate their thoughts on the management of small acoustic neuromas and other surgical and radiation treatment issues.
After lunch, Dr. Scott Stephan spoke about facial reanimation options, along with Cathey Norton, who addressed the benefits of physical therapy for facial muscles post-surgery. Dr. Paul Moots gave an interesting presentation on NF2, followed by Gina Angley and Dr. Robert Labadie’s presentations on hearing rehabilitation after single-sided deafness and hearing aids.
The final panel of the day consisted of moderator Dr. Bennett, Dr. Matthew O’Malley, Dr. Rivas, and Dr. Lola Chambless. The group reviewed additional case studies of patients with acoustic neuroma in the only or better-hearing ear, endoscopic removal and other surgical innovations. Throughout the day, attendees had the opportunity to pose questions to the presenters, and many had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with all of the healthcare providers during the day.
The event concluded with a thank you from Dr. Haynes and Dr. Thompson.
