Thanks guys - you're the best!  ;D

I really appreciate the well wishes, the PMs, the emails - and the virtual party.  Although I might want a BAHA in my beer (my doc tells me that the new BP100 is waterproof - and I'd like one of those)  :D

We'll have to plan a birthday party in honor of everyone at the the next ANA Symposium.  Can you even imagine how great that would be??

I was MIA because I was out shopping for my birthday present!  No, not that Jaguar I've always wanted.  No, not a Land Rover - or even a Range Rover  ;)  But a brand, spanking new dryer!!!  Not the birthday gift I was planning on, but at least it will match the washer I had to buy last month.

My day was great - even though I would have preferred diamonds or pearls  ;D

There's definitely something to be said for clean, dry clothes though!

"Foo foo la la" present? I've never heard that expression before.

I picked out my birthday present this year at the Chicago MicroCenter just before the symposium . . . a new Mac mini! The monitor on my beloved old igloo iMac was about to give out. I already had a keyboard, mouse and monitor, and the Mac mini was on clearance. Perfect solution.

My husband is terrible about picking out presents, which doesn't bother me a whole lot, because this way I always know I will like what I get. Hmmm, my fifteenth wedding anniversary is coming up in November. What shall I pick out then?

Jo - The book club is currently discussing The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It is a story, told in a series of letters and telegrams, about the German occupation of the Island of Guernsey during WWII. The residents of the island had very little to eat, both due to its isolation and because some of the German soldiers appropriated much of the locals' food for their use. The residents of the island had to become very resourceful and one of the dishes they invented during the occupation was potato peel pie.

My offer to Jan was tongue-in-cheek; I have never actually made a potato peel pie. But since I ought not to have put a private joke into another thread without explanation, I searched for a potato peel pie recipe for you and found this one:

Beat 2 egg whites until soft peaks form, fold in 2 cups grated and well drained potato peel(about 3 large potatoes). Add 1 teaspoon of dill weed. Press into greased pie plate leaving a deep impression in the middle. Bake at 400 for 25 minutes. Meanwhile boil the potatoes and one or two carrots or beets until soft in a small amount (1 cup or less) of salted water(sea water?). Mash well without draining adding 3 tablespoons sour cream and more dill and garlic if you have it. Mound in cooked pie shell, bake an additional 10 minutes. Top with a small handful of grated cheese. Can be served hot or cold.

Doesn't sound too yummy, and I imagine the islanders' version would have been simpler yet. I imagine the dairy products would have been scarce.

Jan,

I wish I had read this post sooner.  I just shipped you a dog for your birthday present.  I thought you said you wanted a Rover.   ???  I guess you can send him back and I'll send you a box of dryer sheets instead - then you'll have clean, dry AND static free clothes.  ;D

Sounds like you have enough virtual food sent your way - so I'll just help you virtually eat it all.  Except maybe the potato peel pie... :P

Hope you had a great birthday!

Lori -

please send the dryer sheets - I'm all out and could use some (would save me a trip to Walmart)  ;)

As for the "Rover", I'm still waiting for that pic-a-weiner that Kaybo promised me a few years ago.  I don't think the cats would like it, but it might stop the kids from whining about why I won't get a dog.
