Woooooooo Hooooooo ...I Can Skate
« on: April 12, 2008, 10:19:20 pm »
I took my girls skating tonight ...didn't go last night cause that is Bo's job
and he wasn't here but working storm damge... my husband works for the
electric system and we had a tornado take out 30 homes on north side of
county on Friday afternoon and  he has been at work since 7:00...I usually
avoid the skating rink due to all the noise and movement making my head
want to come off

I decided I was going to skate too ...the girls freaked out ... I call Shandy
(#2 son) who lives about a mile from rink and told him to come over so he
could take the girls home if the ambulance had to come for me...

I made 10 rounds and decide to keep going ... then 5 more and
5 more etc etc ended with 52 rounds ... did alot of windmilling with
my arms but didn't fall... got the man to turn off disco ball as it was
really messing with my balance...

I have discovered muscles in my stomach and sides I forgot
about ... I was tightening torso to catch myself...gonna be sore
come morning ... biggest problem was helpful kids ... they watch
out for me at school and were gonna stay close to catch me ...
I told them that I weighed a thousand pounds and it would hurt
when I fell on them... they decided not to help me so much... I
think I over did it ... (I know I did )

I used to skate fairly good ... I did OK tonight and didn't fall...
had less trouble skating than I do walking on uneven ground...
I can't ride a bike without going over and I can't walk on a treadmill without
getting alot of wide to side wobble in my step... ( Pirate swagger)
I am truly amazed with this new accomplishment and proud of myself too...

Gonna be really pissed off at self in the morning because I am
already starting to ache ... about 10 minutes in I started getting a
head ache... I had taking half a hydrocodone and an extra strength
Tylenol about 10 minutes before starting ... should have waited
a little longer...just sat down til the ache started easing and took
off again... it felt so good to find something physical I could do
with few problems ...

YAY... one step closer to recovery or at least more normalcy...

we got home about 10:00 and Bo had come in about 9:00... he was s
semi conscious when the girls were trying to tattle on me so he didn't really get
what they were telling him... he will fuss in the morning but I don't care ...this
has made me really happy...maybe happier than it should but happy is happy and
I will take it ... I may change tune in the morning when I can't stand up but
for now ...wooooooooooooo hooooooooooo...

happiness clouded a bit by stiff sore muscles ... but glad I did it anyway... it gave
me a big mental boost... now I need to find some training wheels for my bike  :) and
conquer that ...

husband is still snoring so haven't been lectured yet... I figure he worked from Friday
morning at 7:00 til about 1:00 Saturday morning only to go back to work at 5AM  and got off
at 8 last night ... if I am lucky he will sleep til noon and I won't have to hear anything til then  :)

That is GREAT!!  So excited for you!  I do LOTS of stuff but CAN NOT do the treadmill -- I do all sorts of other machines at the gym but NOT that -- there is something about it that throws me WAY off.  I know others do it & have no problems...

Congratulations on tackling a daunting challenge (skating) and surmounting it.  You prepared fairly well, no doubt expecting the worst (vertigo escalating to unconsciousnesses) but were able to skate 52 rounds without incident.  Nice going!  The aching muscles are no fun but try to think of them as 'battle scars' in your fight to regain normalcy.  Obviously, your skating success has been therapeutic and given you more confidence and hope.  Now, to conquer the bicycle!

I'm sure your hubby will be concerned for you but I trust he'll see your elation from your skating success and realize that refusing to confront physical challenges will only hamper your total recovery while taking the physical challenges on can be a great benefit to you, sore muscles and all.  Maybe he'll give you a back rub.  ;)

Again: congratulations on your skating success and may you have more such accomplishments in the near future.  :)

Soundy,

Congrats! There is no truer feeling than trying to do what we all deem as "normal" life activities we enjoyed before we started this "journey". Good for you! :)

Husband just gave me a look and didn't fuss ...

The girls had an ice skating trip with Girls Scouts yesterday... they had never been
on ice skates and took a few spills... I wisely watch from the sidelines ...baby steps...

bad thing about small town ( we are really not in town but a community) is that anything
you do everyone knows by noon the next day... had several concerned friends call and told
them I am fine... still a bit sore but that will pass... people cannot understand why this had
me so excited ... and still working out why I could balance on skates but the bike and treadmill
throw me ...

I stopped at a sports store on way back from Nashville yesterday and looked at roller skates... the
rink will close after this coming weekend as the old man that owns it goes to Florida for the summer...
we have a park with a wheels track... skateboards/scooters /bikes /skates... I am planning my
own therapy...figure a helmet and pads will need to be added to my uniform and I will be set... the girls
told me that I am too old (46) and will break myself... I see it as fixing myself... and will be sensible and
not skate alone

Sore but smiling in Tennessee  :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

That is great news!  I hope this is the beginning of many new adventures for you - just invest in those elbow and knee pads, and a helmet.. and maybe wrap yourself in bubble wrap before you get too crazy!

I give you a lot of credit - I've tackled the treadmill but haven't even considered getting on ice skates or roller blades!  You're a brave soul.  The things we won't do for our kids.

Let me know next time you're in Nashville - we can do lunch.

I LOVE your style!  Setting goals is such a healthy way to approach life - challenge yourself a little bit each day and what you can accomplish is truly amazing.  You're setting a great example for the rest of us who are awaiting surgery - thank you!

And I rode my bike!! Yes! I was so excited becasue from the time I was diagnosed I was scared I would not be able to ride my bike again! So last week, 5 1/2 months out I got on my bike without even thinking if I could do it or not. Away I went. It was such a great feeling. There is life after an acoustic neroma surgery!!

this has nothing to do with my great skating adventure

I have been feeling so good about skating without mishap and sleeping better since
seeing doctor about crazy dreams after the old lady whacked me with her cane ... thought
I turned a corner and the world was getting brighter...

our insurance is going to change and they are saying they will pay for nothing concerning
AN such as follow up visits ,MRI ,BAHA etc etc  for a year and then probably never for BAHA...
I am a "potential liability"... they didn't even bring up lupus but I have a form that I have to return
by Friday listing ailments I have had in past 5 years ... when that is picked up I guess I will
become a "First Class potential liability"... and it will be as they have already requested my
medical records... if they have them why do I have to fill out a form telling them what
I have had... they have it in a very thick file...

You ever feel like you have been kicked in the stomach ?? I feel the wind coming out of my sails...

But have decided to go on with my skate therapy plan and CIGNA can pay for any casts required before
switch over...not gonna let this stop my forward momentum...

Good grief, Soundy - that totally sucks.  Can you petition Cigna to continue with them as your insurer?  Is there a state insurance or patient advocate of some sort you can contact.  This seems to incredibly unfair.  I would be interested in what any others might have to say on this.

Meanwhiile, continue to skate and do positive things for yourself.
