Headache Surgery as a Migraine Solution

My Experience With Headache Surgery for Migraine Relief—Sharing in Case It Helps

Just wanted to share my story in case it helps someone else here. I’ve lived with chronic migraines for years—most of the pain started at the base of my skull and radiated upward. Like many of you, I tried everything: medications, Botox, physical therapy, diet changes—you name it. Some things gave short-term relief, but nothing lasted.

Then I came across a blog [https://www.headachesurgery.com/a-new-understanding-of-migraines-how-nerve-compression-can-cause-chronic-headaches/]“A New Understanding of Migraines: How Nerve Compression Can Cause Chronic Headaches"[/url]. It really changed how I thought about my migraines. I had never considered that the problem might be coming from compressed occipital nerves, not just triggers or lifestyle.

I eventually went through a nerve block evaluation, and after that, I decided to move forward with decompression surgery. Recovery had its ups and downs, but I can honestly say the improvement in my daily life has been worth it. I still get the occasional headache, but the frequency and severity are nothing like before. I can finally sleep through the night again and function more normally during the day.

If your migraines feel tied to neck tension or start at the base of your skull, it might be worth looking into. I just wanted to share this in case it resonates with anyone here who’s still searching for answers.

Would love to hear if anyone’s for this has thoughts. Did nerve decompression or diagnostic blocks make a difference for you?

Thanks so much. Sending strength to everyone navigating this kind of invisible pain. :)

Hi Olivia, thanks so much for sharing this article and your experience.    May I ask, did you have surgery to remove an acoustic neuroma?   I’m a little over a year post retrosigmoid surgery and what you described fits my head pain too. I’ve tried all the things you mentioned also and no success yet.  I have to be honest, my one year anniversary with no end in sight has been pretty discouraging.
Can you elaborate a little more on the surgery and the recovery?  I read up on it a little and see it’s not brain surgery again, which is welcome news.
