Balance/Vertigo after on Boat
« on: April 18, 2016, 01:39:21 pm »
My surgery is scheduled for May 9 2016.  Middle Fossa.

Has anyone spent time on a boat and had trouble with extra dizziness after surgery?  I lead study trips to Greece and we sleep on a boat sometimes and I need to be able to drive and lead tours. thanks!

Hearing saved.  Face is fine. Balance pretty darn good most days.
One year follow up MRI showed no tumor.
Five year follow up showed no tumor, so I'm in the clear.

Hi
I don't know about the boat scenario, but I attended the local Dallas Fort Worth ANA meeting last weekend, they invited a vestibular therapist to the meeting.

She was really great explaining the mechanics of balance (the role of the eyes, the inner ear, and sensation in your joints - all of them factor in).  She showed how a good therapist can identify very specifically where your system is not quite working right, and give you a simple tailored exercise plan that takes just minutes a day, to "train your brain" to adjust for the new you.

I think probably some people don't realize they need more time w/ specifically a vestibular therapist, or maybe there isn't a good one locally.  Anyway seems like they have a whole lot to offer.  But patients need to know about it and seek it out.  I think it is covered by most medical insurance.

Diagnosed 4/2016 1.4cm AN.  Mild hearing loss and tinnitus.
Removed 7/2016 at Keck, Drs. Freidman and Giannotta, Retrosig approach.  Lost hearing in AN ear, but no other negative outcomes.  Will investigate bone anchored hearing devices.

This may sound unusual. I have had problems with seasickness my entire life. I'm 46 and love boats but always get sick.

After my surgery (7 and 8 nerves removed), I don't get seasick any more. Crazy. Life of seasickness. After surgery. No more.  My first sailing trip was five months after surgery.

Thanks, Sheba, for this information.  I've got the name of the PT person at my hospital, and also someone recommended in my home town.  So, I'm planning on getting the therapy I need.

Monday can't come quickly enough; excited to have it be done.
