tumor or cyst?? whats the difference
« on: March 29, 2014, 08:20:28 am »
The ENT in May after viewing my MRI said that I had a cyst. He used the word schwarma. Is that the same as an acoustic neuroma? I plan on getting the MRI notes so that I can understand this more. I have no idea about the size. My issues are tinnitus and balance, which come and go.

I notice a difference in hearing in my left ear...not as strong. Im also trying to find out/figure out how serious this is because I was told that I didnt have to get surgery because it was so small. Im in the learning phase right now.
MRI showed - 1.9cm x 1.9cm x 0.9cm AN - as of 5/11/13
MRI showed - 20.5mm AP x17mm  transverse x 20.7mm - 5/8/14

I think he used the word "schwannoma" as in vestibular schwannoma which is the scientific name for what is commonly called an acoustic neuroma.

A vestibular schwannoma can by cystic or solid. The cystic is less common and sometimes requires more aggressive and immediate treatment.

You can research the terms and be better prepared to speak to experts.

Tinnitus, imbalance, and loss of hearing are all symptoms of acoustic neuromas.

I would not take anybody's word that smallness equates with not serious.

My AN was small (3mm x 4mm x 9mm) and caused complete deafness in that ear.

You might be a candidate for radiation instead of surgery but that is yet to be determined. You'll find a lot of references to acoustic neuroma specialists on this site. They will be happy to review your MRI and discuss it with you.

9/21/16 12mm x 7mm x 5mm
3/23/15 12mm x 5.5mm x 4mm
3/13/14 12mm x 6mm x 4mm
8/1/13 14mm x 5mm x 4mm (Expected)
1/22/13 12mm x 3mm (Gamma Knife)
10/10/12 11mm x 4mm x 5mm
4/4/12 9mm x 4mm x 3mm (Diagnosis)
