Chronic pain
« on: August 13, 2008, 02:06:46 pm »
Hi all,

Here is a great article from CNN.COM on how to talk to your doctor about chronic pain some of us are dealing with. The article also examines and explains doctors' attitudes towards chronic pain.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/08/01/hm.pain.management/index.html

Hope it helps somebody.

Right side AN (6x3x3 cm) removed in 1988 by Drs. Benjamin & Cohen at NYU (16 hrs); nerves involved III - XII.
Regrowth at the brainstem 2.5 cm removed by Dr.Shahinian in 4 hrs at SBI (hopefully, this time forever); nerves involved IV - X with VIII missing. No facial or swallowing issues.

Eve:

Thanks for the link.  The article contains some relevant information and makes the important point that the patient has to be pro-active, be willing the seek out a physician who will not dismiss their pain as 'emotional' as doctors once did with Fibromyalgia (ask my wife) and  expect to be somewhat frustrated until they can  find a doctor that is cognizant of the fact that a patient can suffer with constant pain whose cause may not be readily identifiable, and thus, not readily treatable.  The article correctly points out that Pain Management has become a separate medical discipline and that this is a big step forward in the treatment of chronic pain.

The CNN article is not tremendously enlightening but certainly worth reading.  I appreciate your alerting us to it.

4.5 cm AN diagnosed 5/06.  Retrosigmoid surgery 6/06.  Follow-up FSR completed 10/06.  Tumor shrinkage & necrosis noted on last MRI.  Life is good.

Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is.  The way we cope with it is what makes the difference.
