Just diagnosed 1.9cm 1.2 cm 11/07/05 . House Clinic!!!!!!!!
« on: November 15, 2005, 10:14:42 pm »
Hello everyone. First of all, all of your stories are amazing! You all give me so much hope. My husband and I are in the fashion buisness in south L.A. We are very well known in our field. It is a huge shock for us. We both cried all last week. Today i feel a little better. positive thinking and prayer. It is so hard for both of us because families are back east. I am so happy to have found this site. I just love my life so much as do we all! So this is a little bump in the road. The doctors we met with at house were Dr.'s Friedman and Hitselberger. Both seem awesome! Made us feel better. They want to do the translab appraoch. Looking at the 2nd week of ja. 2006 shortly sfter my 31st b-day! My whole greek family will be coming out.  We are all scared. I just need some support.

Tina,
Sorry that you and your family have to go through this. I have NF2 and bilateral acoustic neuromas. I had my right side 2.8 cm tumor removed at House by the very doctors that you saw. I think that they are awesome. You are in good hands. I had my tumor removed via translab with no damage except a dry eye. It's tough, but you'll get through it. If I can answer any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Hi Tina, I'm with Jeff, we are all willing to help one another in this forum. Most of us have already been through the surgery and want to help in anyway we can. This is the place to be, to get support! I also had surgery at House and I believe it is the best place to go. The doctors are really great, and they put your mind at ease. If I can be of any help as to where to stay or what to take with you, just send me an email. Ann

Tina-
Stay strong. Its overwhelming.
But...
It's treatable
It's benign
It will all be past you soon enough. You'll be having a glass of wine in the summer saying, "Remember when I had that thing removed?" You have the right attitude as its just a "bump in the road". It sucks, but you will pull through. You have life.

I'm 13 days post op and feel great.

Its great that you have your family to support you. That is my biggest support mechanism.

Hi Tina - Welcome to the forum! I am alot further down the road at 7 years post op. I like to check in here because being so far out, I want the newly diagnosed to know that everything will be OK.  Just as Tgentile said, "It's treatable and it's benign". The first thing my surgeon's said to me was "if you are going to have a brain tumor, this is the one you want". Those words were music to my ears. For me the toughest part was waiting for surgery, once that passed, I was eager and ready to recover. Things are different since surgery, but I expected that and have adapted well.

I come from a large Italian family who were all present the day of my surgery, and who saw me through my recovery. Italians like the Greeks, cure everything with food. All I heard during recovery was, "eat this, it will make you feel better".

I can honestly say, my AN did take some things from me, but on the flip side, gave me so much more.

We are here for you.

Hi Tina

Sorry to hear you have to join our club, but we welcome you now that you have. :) In the end it's important you make the decision that's right for you. There is nothing bad about gamma knife, although CyberKnife is the choice many of us make, because it can be done over three days which in theory (an is proving to be true), it allows your nerves to repair themselves between treatments. Also, you don't have to have the headframe attached. I am 28 years old, in my research I found that age is not a factor, and my ENT said I made the right choice with CyberKnife because I was too young and active to have brain surgery. Do lots of research on both options, you have plenty of time. Here's a website you may want to check out, it was created by AN patients www.anarchive.org , it has alot of good info, although it is a bit skewed towards radiosurgery. There are alot of myths about radiosurgery, including that is is only for elderly patients. There is alot of good info in the radiosurgery section of this board as well. If you need any help at all finding information, just let me know. Good luck.

Hi Tina,
I am sorry you had to join the AN journey however, this forum is a great source for information and encouragement.Research,Research,Research!!! Everyone has to choose the treatment that is best for them. I can tell you the time between diagnosis and deciding was the most stressful for me. After I made my decision I felt like a great weight had been lifted. I had the translab approach 8-2-05 in Raliegh NC with Drs Cunningham, Fukushima and McElveen. They were awesome. The follow up care has been great. They removed 100% of the tumor with no facial damage. The tumor was wrapped around my facial nerve. I already had  90%+ hearing loss and I did lose the remaining hearing. My left side has compensated for the balance and on very rare occasions I feel a little uneasy. The only lingering issue is fatigue. I do get tired easier or faster than before but that is getting better every day.I had a previous neck/back injury so that has slowed my progress down a little.
Family and friends are very important during this time. A good support system makes all the difference.
Keep reading. There are so many sucess stories.
You will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Keep us posted,
Lynn

Tina,

I had a 2cm an removed using middle fossia technique 3 years ago and was recently diagnosed with it returning. I have just got my mri results and in the last 6 months it hasn't grown any bigger. My ent surgeon has told me to do nothing. In fact, he will now no longer do any operations on small an's (not sure exactly what small is but I am guessing that as long as it is not pressing too far into the brain, then its small). Anyway, Professor fagan (I'm in Sydney Australia) has drawn on studies done in Europe where, with around 12 years of MRI stats available, evidence that a small tumor will grow into a large one, doesn't appear to be the absolute case. A colleague of his in Finland has over 300 patients on hold - just waiting. Prof Fagan has told me to do nothing and come back in a year. My regrowth is around 19mm. I aked him what if it has a massive growth spurt. he said that he hasn't seen any an's double in a year and it may do nothing for years.

He actually regretted operating on me and in his words "I wish i never touched the middle fossia technique". He will now only operate doing translab.

Without wanting to send you on a mind roller coaster, maybe you should discuss the reasons for taking the tumour out now rather than waiting before you go ahead.

I was all set to have CK treatment but will now defer it for at least a year. I had geared myself up for it and now have to swing my mind around.

Interesting what stats and time can do to thought processes.

Tina,
I had my translab surgery with Dr. Friedman and Dr. Hitselberger in Nov. 2004, 2.1 cm AN.  They were wonderful, caring doctors.  Finding out about the AN and the anticipation of surgery was the worst part.  I came through the surgery very well.  Lost left side hearing and balance nerves, but no facial problems.

I can't believe a year has passed already and my life is back to what it was pre-AN.  Take your time, do the research, and make a decision you will be comfortable with.

Best wishes to you,
Linda

Hi Tina,
That's also my middle name.  I just had cyberknife done last month on a tumor about the size of yours. I almost had surgery at House but after doing alot of research, I decided that it wasn't serious enough to be cut open.  Read the post op posts and look at all the results and damage done.  Granted, alot of AN patients need surgery and should go that route.  As far as age is concerned alot of doctors say that gamma and cyber knife should only be used on the elderly and infirm because surgery would be to stressful on them.  I feel that surgery for a tumor of medium size like yours and mine would be stressful and full of side effects for any age. Why would you take those risks at a young age.  I urge you to read between the sale pitches and the kindness that surgeons push on us and do your homework.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone that had surgery, but even though I have blasting tinnitus and serious hearing loss, I don't consider an AN of small to medium size as being a serious health issue and not worth freaking out over.  I may be wrong, that's just my opinion take it for what it's worth.

Hi Tina,

Sorry to hear about your condition.  We can understand what you and your family are going through now.  My advice to you is research thoroughly into what options are available and which is more suitable for you.  It is a difficult choice to make but whatever decision you made subsequently  go with it with all your heart.  I would like to share with you my experience on the matter.

When I was first diagnosed with the condition - 2cm by 1.8cm AN on my left ear - around April/May 2004, I was shattered and confused.  Fortunately, I discovered this site as well as other related sites.  With the information accumulated I finally got down to discuss my options with my doctors.

The ENT specialist was more inclined towards surgery.  He appeared confident and knowledgeable and was able to respond to my queries and concerns.  Before seeing him I had also received feedback that he was a well known ENT surgeon.  I was comfortable with him and in fact decided there and then to opt for surgery.  Nonetheless, the ENT specialist fixed an appointment for me to consult a neurosurgeon.

About 2 weeks later, I saw the neurosurgeon together with my wife.  He told us that he would be involved in the treatment regardless of my choice (surgery or radiosurgery).  He then explained the pros and cons of both surgery and radiosurgery to us.  As we were undecided, he advised us to take some time to deliberate.  We then left and told him we would get back to him on the same day.

My wife and I went to a cafe and discussed the options.  I told my wife that I was more inclined to opt for surgery taking into account that I was of good health and relatively young (48).  My wife on the other hand pointed out to me that it was a major operation (cutting open the head) and she was not comfortable with the risks involved.  She wanted me to opt for radiosurgery.  After much deliberation and some telephone calls made to close friends we went back to the neurosurgeon.

I told the neurosurgeon that I needed him to respond honestly to one last question before I let him know my decision.  I then asked him if he were me (given the same age, health, background etc) which option would he have chosen.  After pausing for a while he replied that he would only opt for surgery if he knew for a fact that the surgeon was sufficiently competent.  Otherwise he would opt for radiosurgery.

I finally told him that I was opting for radiosurgery.  When I made that decision I told myself regardless of the outcome I would have to live with it.  I have to look forward.

My gamma knife treatment was done in June 2004.  I suffered from pains in the head as well as severe vommitting for a few days.  Less than 2 weeks later I was back at work.  I was fortunate in that I did not have any serious complications ie no dizziness, balance problem etc.  My hearing loss was the same pre and post treatment.

In June 2005 I had my first MRI scan and no further growth was detected.  My next scan is in June 2006 and I am still keeping my fingers crossed.  Presently, my condition is being monitored by an ENT specialist, neurosurgeon and radiologist.

Once again, Tina go with your choice with all your heart after your research, consultations, discussions etc.  There is no right or wrong answer here.  We are with you all the way.

All the best and please keep us posted of your progress.
