Blood Pressure
« on: June 17, 2007, 05:29:57 pm »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had experienced an increase in their blood pressure since undergoing AN surgery. My blood pressure has always been on the money prior to surgery, even during my pre op exam. Post op, I now have elevated blood pressure.

Anyone else?

Dan

Hi Dan,

My daughter, Chelsea, didn't have high blood pressure but developed 'sinnus tachycardia' (sp) and her heart rate was in the 140's-150's after her surgeries.  She was checked over by the cardio team at UCLA and they put her on a low-pressure drug called Metropolol.  This is usually for high blood pressure.  Problem was that it caused her blood pressure to get too low so she only took it if her heart rate was up and blood pressure was over 100/65.  The cardio doctor said that the Vagus nerve can be effected by the tumor and cause a host of problems including cardio.  He sad that eventually things will settle down and in most cases come back to normal.  She is doing really well now and although her heart rate will jump up once in a while, she hasn't taken any Metropolol in months.  I hope your BP comes back to normal soon.  What do the doctors say about the rise in pressure since the surgery?

Yes, I had developed labile hypertension and hypotension.  BP would go from 180/118 to 80/50 in two minutes.  I also had sinus tachycardia.  I developed a condition called dysautonomia, in simple terms the autonomic nervous system becomes disturbed and cannot regulate the pulse and BP.  I had to see a specialist at Vanderbilt in Nashville because there are very few doctors who study this condition or are even familiar with it.  Most doctors have never heard of it and look at you like you are nuts.  But ask any cardiologist and they are becoming much more aware of this.  I now take atenolol ( a beta blocker) to regulate the BP and the pulse.  And just like Chelsea by BP went too low on the medication and now I only have to take a very small dose.  Before this AN i never had a problem with my BP.
Left AN dx. 11/05 Linac radiosurgery 01/06 Burlington, VT for a 9mm x 5mm tumor.  No necrosis yet (2 yrs. post-op).  Multiple post radiosurgery complications, some permanent.  Have radio-oncologist here.  Now see Dr. McKenna, Mass. Eye & Ear Instit., Boston for flollow-up care as my main An doctor.
