Cochlear Implant and Single Sided Deafness
« on: January 24, 2025, 08:28:15 am »
I had a 2.2cm turmor in my right ear removed in October 2004 by translabyrinthine approach.  I started wearing a hearing aid in my left ear with a CROS hearing aid in my right ear around 2010.  Over the years my hearing has deteriorated to the point where my audiologist recommends I see a specialist about a Cochlear Implant for my right, deaf, ear.  Her feeling is I might be able to better process words with the implant. I would be interested if anyone has had a Cochlear Implant on their deaf ear.

I would suggest to do lots of research to make sure this will work for you.  I started down this path but was halted when I was told the implant would cast shadows on my future MRIs so my Dr. said it was a no go for me.  I would 1st clarify with your Dr. that this an option that will work for you.  There are lots of groups on FB & so many different stories about Cochlear implants & SSD.

To deal with my SSD on the left side, I now use the ReSound Nexia CROS hearing aids & they has worked great for me but I have no hearing loss in my right ear.  I wish you the best.
4.3 cm Vestibular Schwannoma left side
Dry Mouth main symptom and then Balance issues & suffered from Hydrocephalus (No hearing loss before)
Retrosigmoid Surgery at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, MO -2019
After: SSD, MRIs to monitor small residual tumor, some facial paralysis, No Balance Issues

Thank you for your response.  I plan on doing more research. I have gone to 1 Cochlear Implant support group on Facebook and posted my situation.  No one has responded that they are SSD with a CI in their deaf side.  I'm waiting to hear from the referal.  I have a lot of questions.

I just rejoined ANA and am investigating CI for single sided deafness. My good ear is basically good - just some age related high frequency loss. I started considering CI because, despite wearing a CROS and Hearing Aid, I still have trouble problems hearing out of my AN ear when somebody is speaking next to me, no sense of directionality when somebody is speaking and I can't see them, and following group conversations. Just curious what you have found out?  Did you make a decision re: CI?  Thank you.
3/25/13- dx 18x11x14 mm AN, hearing loss in right ear x 5+ years, 5 sessions of CK completed May 2013, now a "post toastie".  Follow up MRI 4/14/14 - 15x19x11 mm. Stable with some signs of necrosis.
 Yippee!

Angela330, I am also SSD on left side and no hearing loss on the right. I am thinking of getting CROS or similar product. Can you please describe the improvements when you are wearing it? Do you see any negatives with that product?
