AN Referral problems with HealthNet HMO - Optum
« on: September 12, 2023, 02:40:11 pm »
My PCP referred me to a Neurosurgeon after she saw a potential AN in an MRI. However, the neurosurgeon said that although he can do the surgery (w/out a Neurotologist involved), he doesn’t  deal with AN patients much. He says that he only does these surgeries 1-2 year, and that (with surgery) I will most likely lose all my hearing in my left ear.

I had a second opinion with Dr. Peng at the House Clinic, and he said my AN is small and is in a favorable position, that there is a really good chance my hearing can be preserved.

After requesting for a more experienced AN provider, the neurosurgeon said it’s my PCP’s job to write a referral. However, my PCP then told me that the neurosurgeon is the one to write a referral. This has been going on back and forth for a few weeks now. I’M SO LOST.

I then called Optum Medical Group and explained the situation. And they said this is the only neurosurgeon available in-network so I have to get treated my him. :/

Has anyone experienced this? If so, how did you go about it?
