Tinnitus still there with hearing aid?
« on: October 24, 2006, 08:48:07 pm »
I have a new TransEar.  I cannot hear any change in my tinnitus with it.  I have both a low humm in the background and a sound induced rattle or tinkling throughout my day.  The hearing aid doesn't alter this.  As far as I know, no hearing aid user I have met on this borad has found a relief from tinnitus with a hearing aid.

Any other opinions on this?

Hi Boppie,

I don't have a hearing aid, but the audiologist I went to says that they are "supposed" to help mask the tinnitus because the nerves are being stimulated more with regular noise and then the brain loses interest in the tinnitus and starts to hear the other noises. At least that's how I interpreted what she was telling me.  Now, how long that takes, or if that works for everyone, or if that works at all - - - I don't know.  I certainly hope it works eventually, because it would be nice to have something good, besides better hearing, come out of the expense of these hearing aids.  Keeping my fingers crossed for you - - :)

Well, Sue you have a good point.  I notice that the tinnitus is the same in pitch but my brain is busy with the aid and I don't find the tinnitus annoying.  I've not anticipated being without tinnitus.  I'd be surprised if it vanished.  Maybe I wouldn't know it! ::)

Sue - that's basically what my audiologist told me today as well. She does have one patient that has noticed a slight difference when using the Transear. I pray that I also have the good fortune of lessening the tinnitus.  You had mentioned in another post about an ear plug for the good ear. It is called a musician's ear plug and is available through your audiologist. They take an impression of the canal, so it is designed and fitted specifically for you. It reduces the noise without distorting it. I go to alot of concerts and it was well worth the $70.00 that it cost me.
