Just diagnosed
« on: August 14, 2015, 03:07:36 pm »
Hi,
I live in Israel and was diagnosed with AN 2 days ago.
I have a pretty big tumor (3.3 Cm X 2.4 Cm) which pushes and affects parts of the brain. As far as I understand I have to go through surgery in the next couple of months.
Israel is a small country with very good Neurosurgeons but there is not a lot of experience in this field.
I am willing to travel abroad but would like to go to the best and most experienced doctors there are.
I read a lot about House in LA and about Dr.Samii in Germany.
I would appreciate any recommendations you could give me from your experience.
Thank you.

After reading this great forum (so lucky I found it) I am nearing my final decision for treatment.
As we are travelling all the way from the other side of the world, it comes down to 2 options now:
House in LA or MASS (with Barker and Mckenna).
I would really appreciate any feedback from some of you about your surgery experiences/outcomes so I can make the right decision.
I know both places are very good but if you could choose which one would it be ?

Hi Tamarbm,
I went to House and could not praise them enough! I had Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Friedman 2 years ago (before he moved to USC), and they were beyond amazing! My tumor was smaller (1.4cm) so I was eligible for the Middle Fossa approach, but they preserved my hearing and I had no balance or facial issues whatsoever! St. Vincent hospital (where they perform surgeries) is amazing as well. They see 2 AN patients a day multiple days a week, so they have the routine down! The doctors and nurses know exactly what to expect, and guide you through your recovery every step of the way.

I live in the DC area, so I also flew some distance to get there - not across the world, but at least across the country?

Hope this helps!
Diagnosed Dec 2012: AN 1.4 cm with mild hearing loss and tinnitus. Surgery: Middle Fossa at House with Schwartz/Friedman on April 10, 2013. Entire tumor removed, no facial issues, no balance issues, and they preserved my hearing!! Co-leader of the Washington, DC ANA support group since 2016.

Thank you for your support and answers.
I chose the House Clinic and sent them all the information yesterday.
I picked Dr.Scwartz and Dr. Slattery.
And I am ready to travel to LA at the beginning of October.

I spent an hour on the phone with Dr. Schwartz a few weeks ago. The man is a genius. You are in excellent hands.

I think you made a fantastic selection with House Clinic and Dr. Schwartz.
