exercise?
« on: July 07, 2014, 08:53:31 am »
I had been doing moderate exercise for years and at time I picked it up and got more in depth. Last year when I did not know I had an AN I walked for 6miles at a time in the heat pushing a stroller wearing flip flops lol.  I had a friend who was a runner and this year I wanted to start running after reading about the importance of staying healthy before surgery which I may or may not do.  When she learned of my tumor...stupid me just trying to explain why going our running with her this year was important, because I may have the surgery and not be able to run for sometime due to balance etc. She backed away and said maybe I should just wait till after surgery.  She did not want my brain to swell.... So I see the FP on the 14th and she is someone I trust with my life, since she saved my life from melanoma , also last year, and my neuro is way too busy to answer me before I would get answers from her...just looking for a little peace of mind...cause that is just who I am at this moment.

So meat of the question has anyone else heard that they should not do too much exercising due to the tumor and possible swelling?
Thank you and prayers for you all.

I ran every day right up to the day before my surgery. One of my more noted symptoms was occasional facial tingling, and it was more pronounced when running, but the same afterwards.
Running caused me no problems before or after the surgery, but you should get an okay from your doctor as everyone is different. I did have a relatively large tumor and both cerebellar and brain stem compression with a shifted 4th ventricle and no one advised me to quit exercising.
Being in good physical condition is important, but it can be achieved in more than one way. For example walking on an incline is as beneficial as jogging in terms of calories burned and aerobic conditioning. I never heard anything about brain swelling from exercise. Good luck.

Thank you.  I am going to try to get a response from the Dr., I chose running just because I like to push myself and I did enjoy the rush of running back in high school.  The woman I am wanting to run with is always in marathons and she said she would take it easy on me, but I wanted to run with her because most the people I know don't like to exercise and won't even do long walks with me.  It will be nice for once to be the person to slow someone else down. :)

FP gave me the all clear to do anything I felt big enough to do, but to be safe, like with balance issues I probably should not be riding a bike in traffic. ;)
