Acoustic neuroma was here, now gone!
« on: December 16, 2013, 11:32:44 pm »
Hello, I was diagnosed this year, underwent rapid hearing loss, balance issues etc. After a couple of considerations I had translab with Dr Brackmann and Schwartz from House. After a few bad dizzy spells the first day, I was starting recovery already. Surgery was 5 days ago, I am out, spent time on the Santa Monica pier today and rode an escalator. I am amazed at the rapid speed of improvement. My good ear hears so much better without the bad ear hearing words wrong all the time. I rest often but feel free of this problem! I have met 6 patients here in the last week same problem, different surgical approaches. We are all doing great one day at a time! I am 55yrs, traveled from Idaho. Happy Holidays!

I am so happy for you!!!  And it is soooo great to hear from people who have had good results and speedy recoveries.  I am scheduled at HEI in January and I am scared to death!!! Between wondering whether I made the right decision and imagining all kinds of nightmarish results I hardly have time for anything else.  And I am obsessed with this website, it has been such a wealth of information and encouragement.

Hi, Karen ~

Congratulations on your excellent outcome and rapid recovery!  Absolutely inspirational and much appreciated.

Jim
4.5 cm AN diagnosed 5/06.  Retrosigmoid surgery 6/06.  Follow-up FSR completed 10/06.  Tumor shrinkage & necrosis noted on last MRI.  Life is good.

Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is.  The way we cope with it is what makes the difference.

Now, that's an  encouraging statement!
Thank you and best wishes....
Diagnosed AN in 2008,  3.2 cm CPA round, retrosigmoid surgery performed by Dr. M. Sisti, Columbia Pres.Hospital  NY, in Jan 2013, After surgery no major issues, Hearing retained (>50% ). However, 2 YRs post surgery MRI shows a further decrease in the size of residual AN! No GK or any therapy needed.

Congratulations on your successful outcome Karen. Truly amazing and inspirational for anyone contemplating surgical excision. I am sure you are going to have a great Christmas and a very happy and healthy New Year.

Regards

Derek
Residing UK. In 'watch & wait' since diagnosis in March 2002 with right side AN. Initially sized at 2.5cm and now self reduced to 1.3cm.
All symptoms have abated except impaired hearing on affected side which is not a problem for me.

THANK YOU everyone! When I first got out of ICU and had to walk it was scary! But everytime I walk, I am visibly better, I like the positive feedback! Its been a humbling experience. Do not fear surgery if its what you chose! I am so glad I did it. Like everyone says, walk and get walking before you every go to surgery if able.

This was my experience, too.  Surgery isn't the best choice for everyone, but it was for me and I've never regretted it.

I'm also doing my part supporting the economy in L.A. Shopping involves sensory input, balance, distraction, walking, and bags for my daughter to carry! Tomorrow will be packing Langers for a picnic at Santa Monica.
Life is good! Karen
