Helpful HowTos and Tips for Newbies
« on: August 22, 2006, 08:27:50 am »
Please share any usefull HowTos to ease the learning curve for our new members.

Some useful HowTos would be:

  • How to post a picture in their name box
  • How to send a personal message
  • How to search
  • How to list a signature
  • How to use icons in the new message box

The HowTos are not limited to the ones listed above.  Any useful tips would be greatly appreciated.

This was a great suggestion by our Hero Member Captain Deb!

Starting a new topic

First of all, please do not start a new topic here in the "Welcome" area--decide where you want your topic--General Discussion, Pre-treatment, Post-treatment, etc.

On the upper  right hand corner of the topic area (again, General Discussion, Pre- or Post-treatment) is a small box that says "New Topic" You can introduce yourself there and let us get to know you.

Adding a "signature" and a "personal text"

This gives us a frame of reference on you and helps us learn how to help you!

1. Click on the small box that says "profile" under the search box on any page
2. Find "modify profile" and click on it
3. Click on "Forum Profile Information"
4. You will see a page where you can enter "personal text" which appears to the left of everyone's posts, and a "signature, where you can post      your particulars, links to Myspace or your Frappr site (no commercial sites, please)
5. At the bottom of the page, click "change profile"

To add a picture to your personal text:

1. first you need a URL for your picture, which you can set up through Myspace or Frappr, which alot of us use. Go to http://frappr.com/AcousticNeuroma and   set yourself up a site. Upload the image you want in the "my photos" section. Be sure to crop it first into a square, or you will get a "funhouse" image of yourself (or your dog or bird or whatever)
2. Once you have the image on Frappr--RIGHT click on the image--you will get a looong number that starts with http:// and ends with jpg.
3. Press ctrl C on your computer (copy)
4. Bring up your profile page the same as you did above.
5. Paste the number into the bar in personal text.
6. Click at the bottom--change profile

To post a photo in a post:

1. Follow steps 1--3
2. Bring up a reply page
3. Click the picture icon above the smilies
4. Paste the number between the brackets that come up

I am certainly no tech wizard like some of the people here, and there are probably other ways to get a pic to come up, but this is how I do it!
And Welcome to the Forum! We are glad you are here.

Administrator, Phyl, Deb,or anyone who knows the answer:

I, bein a Boomer, already have text size at Largest, and that is fine for reading the posts.  What is for me since surgery very difficult is this reply preparing screen.  I have to use Preview several times to correct what I cannot see very well until I see the screen provided by Preview. Any remedy?  Sure keeps me from posting, though despite that and some other hardships navigating I am getting hooked.  Well Hook had it in for the WendyBird...
thanks,

I've had the same problem. Is your computer itself formatted to display larger text?

Hi there. If you have a scroll wheel on your mouse, hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard and scroll the wheel to enlarge text. Works great with Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Hope this helps!

"Playing" with text in a Post:

1. Enlarging: Write your text, highlight it and you will see "10pt" in the font size brackets. Change this number to any size you want.
2. Changing color: Again highlight your text, choose a color from the drop down list.
3. All the rest of the buttons in the top row work about the same, just make sure your text appears between the ][.
4. The smilies won't appear in you message until it is posted.
5. Remember, if you mess up, just go to your post and fund the "modify" button and fix it or go to the "delete" button and get rid of it altogether.

Sending a private message--just click on the "IM" button in the person's name box. The same "nettiquette" rules apply here. Some of us share our email addys freely--click on the envelope below the persons name. Some of us have personal web pages, click on the globe.

Increasing text size on your computer:
I just downloaded the "google pack" free from google and have installed the "Mozilla Firefox" tool from it as a browser and the type adjustment on it is HUGE!! You can really get big type, even in the reply pages. It also has a spell-checker for posties with "dislexic fingers" like me!

Advice taken.  Alas, I'm still at sea.  I already have the text size at "Largest." Still, in the screen for composing a reply the letters are very small and hard to see easily (for me); holding Control button and moving scroll wheel on mouse only makes text smaller, since I have it set at largest already.  Shall have to try Firefox, I guess.[/size

Is there a way for those with vision problems to set there computer or for the forum  so all entries are in large print, rather then vary from poster to poster,

Could there be an easy to understand how to navigate this forum.  I know one wonderful lady  that is having difficulties with both of these areas.  I would hate to lose anyone because it appears to difficult.

Raydean

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Hi,
If you use Firefox, you can go to Tools>Options and select the General button on the left if it doesn't open to that tab by default. Next click on the Fonts & Colors button on the right. In the resulting window you can set the font size as large or small as you would like. You must also check the box at the bottom of the window that says: Always Use My Fonts
I hope that this helps,
Jeff

This tip has been very helpful for me! Thank you!

I've also downloaded Firefox and that does help as well.

Great tiips, you geeks! ;) :D  :-*  Keep 'em coming!
