eye drops with preservative
« on: October 09, 2009, 09:29:11 pm »
I’ve been using eye drops since july 2006 due to my paralysis, usually I'm using a non preservative one, but don’t know why my eyes began to sensitive with the “non preservative” (I’ve tried many brands), so the docs  gave me eye drops with preservative polyquaternium-1 0.001% and I’ve been using  that for about a year, the docs said that kind of preservative is safe, I’m worry if using the drops with preservative for long term, is there anybody could share about this?

Hi jeemje:  I wonder if you would want to ask your doc if you could try going back to preservative free - I ask this b/c sometimes you may have just needed a break from a brand you've been using so long (if this was not an allergic reaction).   I'm wondering if you could go back & forth with brands....
I've been able to use Refresh PM ointment (drops aren't strong enough) since June 2006 (we're about the same time out !).

Always good thoughts,  Nancy

I would think (and hope!) that the docs know their stuff. Is it hard to find drops with that preservative?

Usually folks have trouble with long-term use of drops with preservatives rather than the other way round. I can't imagine that one would react to purified water or salt in the same ratio as tears, so I wonder if there is some other ingredient that you are reacting to?

I think as long as you are doing well with the drops that your docs recommend, then you are fine. Since you are asking this question, I don't even need to remind you to remain vigilant.

Take care,
Sara

I have had fairly long use of eye drops off and on and guess I am now 3 years since  the facial nerve surgery and no problem with preservatives.       I am only occ having day use now with the Refresh Liquigel which has been my favorite.   I did try some other brands with no luck and more frequent use.                I do use a gel every night in that side and is the lacrilube or Refresh pm with no problem.                                                    Cheryl R

Dear all, thanks for your attention…

I find many folks here using Refresh PM for quite a long time, could anyone  inform me the compositions of Refresh PM, because I could hardly find the same brand in my country, but  I wish I could find different brand with similar composition.

@Nancy: I’ve ever tried to use the previous non preservative one, but my eyes still uncomfortable, several docs gave me some alternative prescriptions but since last year I only comfortable with one product that use preservative.

Jeemje~
I have used Refresh PM for 13 years - I don't have it right here in front of me, but is there any way you could order it off the internet?  I'd be happy to send you some so you could try it...let me know...

I believe that both LacriLube and PuraLube have roughly the same ingredients and proportions as RefreshPm.  I use all three pretty much interchangeably.  And, of course, I am a BIG fan of the Refresh Celluvisc Gel drops, too.
