Eye Dilation (by ophthalmologist) & Balance
« on: January 30, 2013, 09:04:34 pm »
Hello ANA forum members.

50 year old, 7.5 years out from left sided 2.1 cm AN removal. The usual post-op migraines (I can control mine with exercise), instability in the dark, etc. Deaf on left side, of course.

I recently had a retina exam by my ophthalmologist and, unfortunately, a second exam by a retinal specialist for a problem totally unrelated to AN. Both exams required pupillary dilation with drops. I was completely surprised at how much pupil dilation induced "instability" that lasts as long as the pupils are dilated. Has anyone else had this? I've been searching all of the forums I can find, but can't find anything or anyone describing this.

Not surprising that pupil dilation would exacerbate imbalance.

My vestibular therapist explained that there are three elements to balance. The inner ear balance centers, the body's musculature, and the eyes.

When you have balance issues from the vestibular damage and then reduce the efficiency of the eyes by any amount, the balance issues are bound to increase.

Hi;

   The VOR ( Vestibular Ocular Reflex ) may be affected. This is the first time ever I've read of someone being affected by eye dilation ( typically to 6 mm. ).
