White Christmas!!
« on: December 18, 2009, 10:12:49 am »
We are supposed to have 2 feet of snow before morning here in the North Carolina mountains--YIKES!!!!  The last time this happened, Dr Love and I were snowed in with no power for 8 days!!  Our dead end dirt road runs along the river and has a steep slope on the other side--hundreds of trees toppled over onto the road.  We waited for days for the county to cut us out but they never came, so we had a neighborhood chainsaw party and everyone had firewood for 2 years.

We have a woodstove which kept the house fairly warm  and a gas range, so we melted snow to bathe and flush the heads.  We put all of our freezer food outside to keep it frozen.  The only casualty was the top of our wedding cake, which we were trying to save till our 1st anniversary,  but I didn't want to lose it, so we just ate it!

We are supposed to have daily snow through Christmas--I will post some pics for all you Parrotheads and Snowbirds basking in the warmth of the tropics.  That includes our Aussie mates who are enjoying summer!!!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!!

Wow, stay warm and in case you lose electricity again this time.....Merry, Merry Christmas!!  I like looking at the pictures, but I don't want any part of a white Christmas or any of that Splenda in these parts...as a matter of fact ,it could be quite a bit warmer and i would be very happy!!

Why do you think I spent most of my life in the Caribbean?  Growing up in Northern Ohio with lake-effect snow dumped on me for 5 months out of the year really turned me off the white stuff!  The only reason I'm still living up here is that I haven't quite talked Dr Love into moving back down there yet.  He officially retired from teaching LAST WEEK, so there's hope fer me to make the scallywag into an Island Mon yet!!!

Glad you might have a white christmas, even though I'm sure you could do with a little less than what's predicted.  Heck, I heard on the radio that conditions might be shaping up to be favorable that we'll get snow AGAIN IN HOUSTON on/around Christmas..  Must be that global warming thing that Al Gore always lies talks about...  ;)

As far as I'm concerned, White Christmases are highly overrated!!  Last year Christmas was postponed as we couldn't get out of the house.

OK now it is snowing sideways and UP!!  Blowing off the river and up to our mountainside house!! I just heard on CNN we may get as much as 32 inches.  Winter of 94, pre-Dr Love days, we got 54 inches in one storm that they called The Great White Hurricane. I was living in a pretty remote log cabin with my cat and dog. I had to walk down the mountain to my car for 2 weeks! Like living in Colorado with those numbers!  The local ski slopes are cheering.

Dr Love and I are getting out our warmies and fixin' to get out in it with Sadie, our chocolate Lab, who is beside herself.  Snow is her favorite thing, besides swimming in the river, which is now beginning to freeze. Should be a good vestibular work-out!!

Having fun in North Carolinorado,

Capt Deb

WOW!  The girlies would be beside themselves!!  It is a bit warmer now but we had some bitterly cold weather - I would rather have snow with it than just COLD and WINDY!!

Stay safe & warm!

Captain Deb ~

Yes, the weather reports for your neck of the woods (North Carolina) predict a lot of snow over the next 24 hours.  I hope you and 'Dr. Love' will be O.K.  I suspect your experience with living in remote areas during a snow storm will help get you through this blizzard (that's what the Weather Channel is calling it).  Here in Connecticut it's 23° and we're expected to get snow by Saturday P.M. - but the local weather forecast won't predict snowfall totals yet because the storm could veer out over the Atlantic and that would significantly decrease our snowfall.

I'm retired and don't much like dealing with cold, wind, snow and ice for almost half the year but I do like the change of seasons and really appreciate the few months of warm weather we get in the northeastern U.S. so I guess I won't be going south anytime soon, except for an occasional mid-winter jaunt down to sunny Florida when I can afford it, which is all-too infrequently.

Stay warm - and have a Merry 'White' Christmas!

Jim

Oh yes! We had only been married for 4 weeks, too!

Our foray into the blizzard was great--Sadie hopped around like a baby deer and played "explode the snowball"--she is a great catcher and leaps in the air for the snowball, which explodes in her mouth.  Labs are so much fun!

Here is a view out my upper deck--can't even see across the valley now. About 5 inches have fallen.

I wish I'd taken my camera on our walk--it looked like a picture postcard!  Didn't want to have to take off my glove to shoot and it is snowing so hard it would get wet. Maybe I'll take it tomorrow--before the snowplow ruins everything! We have our lanterns and 5 gallon jug of water and I filled the bathtub in case we lose power.

Staying warm in North Carolinarado

Captain, while I don't envy you the prospect of having 2 feet of snow, I do feel disappointed that we haven't gotten what I'd call a "decent" amount of snow yet.

We basically haven't had enough to really shovel (hope I'm not jinxing myself here) and I hate it when we don't have a white Christmas  >:(

I may ultimately regret saying this, but please send some snow my way  ;D

Merry Christmas to you and Dr. Love.

Jan
