Cold slurpee head rush?
« on: June 12, 2009, 10:07:01 pm »
Not sure where to post this question- so "AN community" it is here...

As a kid when I had a 7-11 slurpie I would get a major head rush. As kids we thought it was a wildly funny experience.

Now I am mature  ;) and (er hum) sophisticated ;D  I don’t slurp slurpies (iced pop type beverages) any more.

Today-my kids got out the ice cream maker and made iced milk with fresh strawberries (yum). I slurped some … bam…and I was knocked off my feet. Ear started ringing, I was gagging, facial muscles went hypertonic… Major head ache… balance issues...

Has anyone else had a very ice-cold beverage (or ice cream) and had an extreme head rush since their AN treatment?

I am wondering, "how the extreme cold, in the back of the throat so close to the brain, affects the cranial nerves… more specifically the vestibular (acoustic) and facial nerves?"

DHM -

I absolutely adore slurpees (the 7-11 kind) - lived on them during my pregnancy; even though it brought strange looks from others when I had them for breakfast :D

I've had them regularly for the past two years since my surgery - just had one yesterday, as a matter of fact - but no head rush.

I don't actually "make" trouble..just kind of attract it, fine tune it, and apply it in new and exciting ways

Everytime I get an Icee I get a head rush. In fact I think they are worse since my AN. They last longer and are very uncomfortable but ......I like Icee's and I know the pain won't last so I buy one anyway.

DHM .....

Even as a kid, I had horrible head rushes from anything cold ...... sorry, but I never experienced the "wildly funny experience."   :-[  Therefore, I have always consumed any iced foods/drinks very slowly.  I can't say it is any different since my AN surgery.

Haven't noticed any difference...and i still like a slurpee now and then.

The frozen margarita swirl sounds better though.....and more worth the brain freeze.... ;D

Hi all,

I call it a freeze brain, after I heard my neice yell it out several times a while back.  Sure I get them, but nothing drastic as you, DHM, describe.  Just a slight headache for about a minute.

But I'm with Clarice ..... slow is better for me.   ;)

And I'm also with Bob .... why a slurpee, or Rita's .... when you can opt for a frozen margarita swirl !!!!!!!!!   8)

We called them "ice cream headaches" when I was a child. My kids call them "brain freezes." I always assumed that everyone gets them, and in the same location. But only some people get them, and of those who do get them, they occur in different places. I get them behind my eyeballs, and the right side is more painful than the left. My daughter gets them in her forehead.

Strange but true physical phenomena.

I got a brain freeze eating Italian ice a few weeks ago - but....only on my non-AN side.

I've also noticed that when my allergies are acting up, the roof of my mouth and the inside of my ear itch - but only on my non-AN side.

At least now allergies and Italian ice are only half as painful as they used to be!   :D

I would never have thought to label the sensation one gets from drinking a frozen beverage too quickly as a "rush"... I usually think of it as the "stabbing ice pick of doom". My 'rush' usually takes the form of a feeling that someone (probably some long thought dead camp homocide victim wearing a Sheky Green mask) has stabbed an ice pick into my temple. The most common beverage that creates this for me is a Starbucks light, caramel frappacino..but blended margaritas have been know to create that sensation too.

I haven't actually noticed which side it seems like the ice pick is entering...  I really couldn't tell you if it occurs on any particular side or if there is any consistency to the pattern. I'm not exactly eager to run out and slurp a big glop of semi-frozen coffee just to find out either...I will however try to remember to take note the next time this occurs naturally.

I guess if 7-11 ever comes out with a stout flavored slurpee I could learn to like those but until then I'll stick with the coffee flavored ones.

Thanks Tim for getting the chuckles going this morning .... the Shecky Green masked victim is a funny visual!  BTW, I enjoyed your blog about your coffee maker.

Wishing you, and others, few if any ice-pik brain freezes!   :o :P
