Article cites vitamin E restores hearing
« on: December 01, 2008, 02:40:09 am »
Hi, everyone:

Here is an interesting article I came across a few days ago:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3681472.stm

I'd already been taking 400 IU of vitamin E daily for the past year.  A few days ago, I noticed my hearing ability seemed degraded on my AN side and I was beginning to suffer hyperacusis for the first time. After reading the article, I upped my dose (gradually) to 400 IU twice per day and noticed a significant improvement in my hearing and decreased hyperacusis. I'm now upping the total daily dose to 1000 IU to see if it helps more.

My improvements may be temporary or coincidental. Dunno. But I thought everyone would be interested in reading this article regardless.

Best wishes,
Tumbleweed

Tumbleweed,

I wonder if the decreased hearing and hypercussis is the swelling of the tumor, or swelling around the tumor.  About a month ago, after I was first diagnosed, my hearing became very distorted and I was experiencing hyperacusis also.  I found that more scary than my diagnosis, as I didn't know what was going on with my hearing until I looked it up on the web.  I immediately called my local doc, and he put me on a steroid.  After only 1 dose, it decreased drastically.  Within 24 hours it was almost gone.  After I was off the steroids, my hearing hasn't been the same as when I was on them.  I've been popping Ibuprofen, but I've been trying to be careful with that.

I might try the vitamin E.  However, I read that the docs don't like us to take any mega-doses of any vitamins, so I'm a little cautious about that.  What is vitamin E generally good for?

Just to let you know I went to the store today and bought some Vitamin E....at this point, anything that might save my hearing is worth it!  Thanks for the tip.  I"ll let you know what I think in a few days.

Tisha

I've assumed that swelling of the tumor is the cause of my very recent hearing problems. I'm almost 5 months post-CK, and Dr. Chang told me that the time that most "swellers" have problems is 6 to 18 months post-treatment, so I'm entering the danger zone, I suppose.

Vitamin E is good for maintaining the health of the nervous system and reproductive organs, as well as for preserving the youthfulness of skin (and preventing scar tissue when used externally on wounds). Coincidentally, I've also found it to be a strong male aphrodesiac!  :) Just to be clear, that's not my reason for taking it; I'm taking it for hearing rehabilitation. Yeah, hearing rehabilitation. Let me say that again, so I can convince myself, I'm taking it for the hearing rehabilitation.  ;D

Best wishes,
