Husband had CK done 10/1/07 for another type of benign brain tumor (meningioma) and had CT scan and MRI done 9/27/07 for mapping purposes - they wanted very up-to-date images even though last MRI was 8/22/07 but not at their facility.

Jackie,

I had two AN microsurgeries and both times I had MRIs a day or two before the surgery. One of the neurosurgeons explained to me that they want very recent MRI because they don't want an unpleasant surprise of the tumor growing much bigger all of a sudden. It rarely happens but it does anyway. They have to plan and estimate and a bigger tumor might  require different instruments, operating times and so on. Hope it helps.

Right side AN (6x3x3 cm) removed in 1988 by Drs. Benjamin & Cohen at NYU (16 hrs); nerves involved III - XII.
Regrowth at the brainstem 2.5 cm removed by Dr.Shahinian in 4 hrs at SBI (hopefully, this time forever); nerves involved IV - X with VIII missing. No facial or swallowing issues.
