First post op MRI
« on: December 10, 2007, 10:32:34 pm »
For those who had AN surgery, when did your doc recommend you have your first post op MRI?

I've been reading posts that refer to a 6 month MRI and I passed the 6 month point about 6 weeks ago.  I haven't schedule one yet, but from what I recall, my doc said that I'd have to do a follow up MRI in a year.

Is 6 months the norm?  Is there any reason I shouldn't wait 12 months?  ???

Input, please.

Thanks,

Jan

Hi Jan,
My doctor recommended my first mri at 1 year and that's what I did. Thank goodness everything looked good! I had translab.
Take care,

Jan,
I've heard of both approaches, either asking for an MRI 6 months and/or 1 year post treatment.  My doctor asked for both.  I usually contact his admin person about 2 months before the MRI is due, and she schedules the MRI.  The doctors and their admin staff may not have a "tickler" that reminds them to schedule follow up MRIs.  Ask your doctor what their normal follow up MRI schedule is.  And then you can help them follow their normal procedure.

I was told 1 year too.  Maybe it's different based on the type of surgery?  I had translab.
Right 3cm AN diagnosed 1/2007.  Translab resection 2/20/07 by Dr. David Kaylie and Dr. Karl Hampf at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.  R side deafness, facial nerve paralysis.  Tarsorraphy and tear duct cauterization 5/2007.  BAHA implant 11/8/07. 7-12 nerve jump 9/26/08.

Thanks Nancy,

Only a Veteran ANer would understand how important this news is. I almost never got the MRI. I had my  1 yr follow-up MRI done here in Mississippi. They had never hear of the BAHA implant  screw that I have in my head or the weight in my eye. I sat for 4 hours while they called my 2 doctors in California before they would even do it.
How is your recovery going. I know it is probably to early, but are you seeing any improvements yet? Hang in there, as you know it takes time. I finally got to where I can smile and show my upper teeth. My wife makes fun of me because everytime I pass a mirror I have to smile. She calls me MR. Congeniality!

Hey Ellis:  I LOVE your wife's sense of humor !!!   4 hour wait !!!!    after my 1 year MRI I had 2 small welts on my leg - they had me wait 1 hour & now I'll have problems next year I'm sure = 4 hour wait would have had me unglued !!!!   I'm healing more & more each day...  the right side is still swollen of course, at the mouth area, but I'm doing okay.

So, Jan, looks like 6 months/ 1year - all up to the treating docs - thank God none of us are the worse for wear......

The post-op info that House Clinic gave me had a box checked off that said get an MRI in one year.   But when I went to see the neuro-otologist for my post-op office visit (7 days after surgery), he told me that because the AN was stuck to the facial nerve, and they had to leave a little bit of tumor material behind, to get an MRI in 6 months.   About 5-1/2 months, post-op, House Clinic sent me a post card telling me to schedule an MRI.

Thanks, all, for your input.  I guess my doc goes with the 1 year time frame.

I was just a little concerned because I read so many posts talking about 6 month MRIs and I didn't want to miss anything.

I'm hoping to hear my insurance company's ruling on my BAHA request within the next few weeks, so at that time I'll be back in touch with my doc's office and will make sure he really meant 1 year.

Congratulations to Ellis!  Wonderful news!
