Hi Peggy - I have a tender spot in the back of my head that's still tender, been that way for years,  but pre-op I had no unusual head pains - only post op headaches (expected) that have since disappeared.

We have own resident "Headache Wizard" who I am sure
will have some ideas - meantime a few thoughts for you
Firstly it is very difficult to localise nerve pain - ie where
it hurts and why - this is why accupunture can work for some
For instance a "head ache" can be caused by poor air or blood supply
to the brain - this can be caused by stress or bad posture
So you sit at the "wrong" angle or whatever - you get a headache
If you spend more time attending to comfort or stress
levels - and the headaches go - you have an answer
Equally eye-strain can cause headaches
- maybe TV too far away - or on too long ?
The point I am making is the pain-killer is not always
the simple solution - it treats the symptom
not the actual cause ?
Might be worth making a note as to when
and how they happen - is there a pattern here ?
just a thought
best regards
tony

Peggy, my husband was diagnosed with an AN in May and he had complained with the back of his head hurting months before he was diagnosed. He doesn't complain as much now. Also a severe throbbing behind his AN ear.
My husband had translab 3/15/2011 for 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm left side AN at
Methodist University Hospital in
Memphis, Tn

I have a hard time believing the 3 doctors (1 ENT & 2 Neurosurgeons) who told me "these things don't cause headaches." I have an occasional sharp shooting pains in the back of my head that just come out of the blue. I describe them as feeling like getting "carpet shocked". Meaning that each jab only lasts about that long. I will get several jabs a minute for about 10 minutes. Then it will just stop, and I may not feel it again for weeks. I have had these both prior and post treatment. I also get a "numb" feeling back there once in a while, as well. Funny, I only have these feelings on my AN side.

Hi there....just wanted to chime in too!  I have headaches....really bad ones....not every day, just some days...and it seems to be located in the back of my head too.  It's also when my vertigo is at its worst.  When I get one of these headaches it usually lasts all day and over-the-counter medication does not seems to help.

Hello,

I'm have the ache in the back of the head all the time now.  Try heating the cloth pack you can buy at the health food stores for neck or lower head pain.  (you put it in the microwave for a minute)  I take Aspirin once in awhile.  Of course for a migraine headache, I take 100 mg of Imitrex.

Hi, me too. It was more of a pressure at the base of my skull toward the AN side. Docs said they didn't think it was related-although the MRI showed the tumor pressing on my brain stem on that same side! It vanished after surgery. Best wishes, Yvette

I had the exact same thing; frrequent pain in the back of my head on my AN side, doctors didn't think was a connection and no headache medication would work on it.  I had my surgery last December and the pains are significantly decreased.  I only get the occasional pressure headache / weather change stuff now.  I have found that Benadryl sinus pressure stuff works for that without drying me out too badly.

Peg,
What's your AN status? Sometimes tension headaches can be cause by the stress following AN diagnosis and cause pain in the back of the head?neck area. Migraines can also be located in the back of head/neck, too. Sloxana, yours sound like migraine.. Look into getting a triptan like Imitrex or Maxalt or Zomig from your doc. They dramatically shorten the duration and lessen the severety of the migraine and relieve the other symptoms of vertigo and nausea.
