Baby Aspirin Regimen Consideration for those on W & W
« on: July 27, 2017, 04:34:23 pm »
Hi all,

I had posted information about the aspirin regimen three years ago, but I think it is worth repeating.

The Information is in the June, 2014 Edition of the Acoustic Neuroma Notes newsletter.  Page 4.  It was about a study conducted by Mass Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, MIT, and Mass General Hospital.

The study demonstrated that one 81 mg aspirin "correlates with halted growth of vestibular Schwannomas (AN's)".

"Our results suggest a potential therapeutic role of aspirin in inhibiting vestibular schwannoma growth" stated Dr. Stankovic, the study's author.  It is true across all ages and genders as well.

The ANA consulted with their Medical Advisory Board about the potential use of a daily baby aspirin related to acoustic neuroma growth mentioned in the article.  It was the Medical Advisory Board's opinion that this is an option to consider in inhibiting the growth of AN's.  They do recommend consulting with a physician before starting the aspirin regimen, and to keep track of the growth of the tumor via regular MRI's.

I have been taking the 81 mg of aspirin on a daily basis for the last three years.  Whether this is what caused my tumor reduction is anyone's guess.  But I figured it couldn't hurt, plus aspirin has beneficial effects for heart and stroke issues, so I just thought it was worth the small cost of the aspirin.

The Universities associated with the study are top notch, the ANA medical advisory board approves of the aspirin regimen as an option so I felt really comfortable doing it.

For what it is worth, even though my AN has decreased in size, I haven't noticed much, if any change in my symptoms.  In fact, my wife thought I was getting slightly worse.  I am pinching myself and wondering if the measurements are really true, but I was assured that the best radiologist (or whatever they call themselves when they read MRI's) on staff had looked at the MRI's and made the measurements.  So I am just going to be happy for a few days or weeks!  Yea!

74year old male, 8.3x7.3x6.5 mm AN on 10-28-13.  MRI on 12-30-13 showed no growth.  Imbalance issues and mild tinnitus.  MRI on July 13, 2014 showed no growth.  Still on W & W and taking baby-aspirin regimen.  MRI in July, 2016 show slow growth (1.1 cm).  MRI on July 24, 2017 was 8.2 x 8.6 x 8 mm!

Rod, you may be the fourth member on this forum to have tumor shrinkage. Your signature does not show shrinkage numbers. What has the tumor size been over the years?

Hi ANSydney,

Forgot to update my profile.

In December, 2013, the measurements were 8 x 7 mm (this was the only measurements they showed for the tumor).

In July, 2014, it measured 9 x 8 mm.

In July, 2015, it measured 11 x 8 mm.

In June 2016, my AN was 9.6 x 10.7 x 8 mm.  (they began showing the results in all three dimensions in 2016).

Latest MRI results on July 24, 2017 was 8.2 x 8.6 x 8 mm.

Frankly, I was stunned at the news, since generally my loss of balance symptoms still remain.  But at least I don't feel like I have to have radiosurgery just yet.  It was recommended that I wait another year and check the results of the next MRI.

I have also been having difficulty with my left eye for several months (the same side as my AN).  Blurred vision, irritation when I blink, and "sleepy bugs" in the corner of my eye in the mornings.  Will be visiting an eye doctor tomorrow to see if there is a good reason for the symptoms.  If not, I think it may be that my AN is pushing against my facial nerve and causing the problems.  The radiologist said my AN is only about 1 mm from the facial nerve.

The eye doctor is convinced my left eye problem is not associated with my AN.  He prescribed some medication to sooth and protect the eyes and it seems to be working wonderfully.  So one more concern I can check off and forget about.

I am officially in the Aspirin Brigade... and will post my next MRI early January.  Noted: Dr. Slattery suggested getting an ABR which should detail how entangled my AN is with my cochlea.

daoisthere, does this mean you've had no treatment and you've decided to go the observation route?

Yes,  For Now.  I remember when I first joined the forum, you were the first to comment that the only way to retain my hearing was to do nothing. I just can't give up that ear without waiting to see any growth of the AN.  I am not excited about the decision. But I am less excited about giving up the hearing more.  I will be scheduled to get my first followup MRI in January. I will also get an ABR at that time as Dr. Slattery recommended. ...and taking my daily aspirin.

Great to hear daoisthere. Way to go. Now, if you can go until August 2019 with MRIs every six months, you'll have five MRIs to really understand what is going on.

I've taken the liberty to enroll you in the prospective aspirin study at https://www.anausa.org/smf/index.php?topic=23724.msg979775391#msg979775391 . Please let me know if that is a problem.

Hi ANSydney,

I gratefully accept your enrollment into this Aspirin Brigade and will publish my outcome with each MRI.

Peace,
Daoisthere
