Suffering with SSD since childhood
« on: January 29, 2016, 01:22:34 pm »
Hello

I am suffering with SSD since childhood not aware that there are many such people in this world with same issue. Came to know about this very recently while I was browsing through web.
I saw a doctor many many years ago for whom it was a case he came across first time. His diagnosis suggested that I avoid noisy places n usage of hearing aid not recommend ed for me. I have faced many problems both in school, at work and any noisy places this 36 years of my life. I hope joining this forum will help me lead rest of my life with fewer problems

Thanks

Hi, my son, who is 10 years old now was born with SSD. I would very much appreciate it if you would please take some time to 'educate' me as to what kind of diificulties you faced growing up. It would help us in dealing with similar situations and also in talking with the ENTs/Audiologists. My son uses the TransEar hearing aid right now.
Thank You.

The following article explains why your childhood doctor was wrong:

SSD is often a symptom of Acoustic Neuroma but since you've had it for 36 years without other related symptoms (you haven't mentioned any) it might not be AN related. However, it would be a good idea to rule out an AN by getting an MRI with contrast.

Additionally, it would be a good idea to see some specialists to determine if there is anything at this late date that can be fixed.

If not, and it turns out you don't have an AN, I suggest you look into hearing aids.

There are many discussions about them in this Hearing Issues section of the forum.

9/21/16 12mm x 7mm x 5mm
3/23/15 12mm x 5.5mm x 4mm
3/13/14 12mm x 6mm x 4mm
8/1/13 14mm x 5mm x 4mm (Expected)
1/22/13 12mm x 3mm (Gamma Knife)
10/10/12 11mm x 4mm x 5mm
4/4/12 9mm x 4mm x 3mm (Diagnosis)

jumping in.  i just found this essay this morning, while looking for something that will explain to friends and family members how my son will be hearing going forward, because folks are having a hard time understanding they can't talk over each other, talk from different directions over each other, or talk over the television with him.  he doesn't complain and tries to suck it up, but i know from my prior research that it cannot be easy for him.

i found it enlightening.  it's written from an adult perspective, but perhaps you can extrapolate to your child's and it can offer some insight into how to mitigate things.

Areles,
Very interesting article,, thanks for posting. So much is true and relevant to us SSD folks. I hope it helps those on here asking about it and how to help their loved ones.

Even after getting my BAHA device,, it is still challenging everyday.
