Repeat MRIs

I'm about to get my 2nd MRI in "W&W" mode & was wondering if others get the full brain MRI (w/&w/out contrast which takes about 45 min & generates 300+ images)I know I need the "with contrast" part, but...I thought they would only look at the tumor area...when I questioned my scheduler, she said it was "standard procedure" to get the full scan...

Jeanne...

MRI scans for acoustic neuromas generally produce full images of the brain. I always consider this a bonus as in the unlikely event that any other unrelated problems are identified, these can be addressed at an early stage.

Residing UK. In 'watch & wait' since diagnosis in March 2002 with right side AN. Initially sized at 2.5cm and now self reduced to 1.3cm.
All symptoms have abated except impaired hearing on affected side which is not a problem for me.

I agree with Derek, as far as MRI images of the full brain, as after my second one and third one they discovered more than the Acoustic Neuroma. I am glad to know about the other intruders, as they are also monitored each time Mri time comes again which is yearly!I am into my 7th year of W and W, and hope to continue also till my 100th birthday!!! Hahahaha! Next MRI scheduled for march 29th!

I got full scans last April and October. About 400 images on each CD. I expect my 6 month post GK will be the same.

However, the MRI that I had on GK day was just for the tumor area for calibrating the GK machine.

Hi Jeanne - I've been a W&Wer for 11-1/2 years and still have an MRI every year.  I asked if I could spread them out and was told that sometimes there are growth spurts so, to be on the safe side, they like every year.  My MRI's are also of the whole head which makes me feel better as I've had breast cancer (9-year survivor) and that is one of the primary routes it will travel if it metasticizes.

9th cranial nerve schwannoma - like an acoustic neuroma on another nerve. Have recently been told it could be acoustic neuroma. Only 7 mm of growth in 18 years. With no symptoms. Continuing W&W

As others have said, it's typical to do a scan of the entire head both with and without gadolinium contrast.

Typically what they do post op also.
