91% hearing preservation when radiation to cochlear is low
« on: December 12, 2012, 03:40:12 pm »
Just found another research paper showing that hearing preservation with radiation is related to the radiation dose to the cochlear.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23216466

Maybe we should be asking our doctors this question.
If I get my tumour treated with you how much radiation will my cochlear get?

10x5x5mm AN
Sudden Partial hearing loss 5/28/10
Diagnosed 7/4/10
CK 7/27/10
2/21/11 Swelling 13x6x7mm
10/16/11 Hearing returned, balance improved. Feel totally back to normal most days
3/1/12 Sudden Hearing loss, steroids, hearing back.
9/16/13 Life is just like before my AN. ALL Good!

Very interesting article.  The doctors knew that my AN was very close or touching the cochlea.  Didn't really have a choice so I did CK.  Two years out only a small lose of hearing but the tinnitus on the AN side is now so loud.  Doctor feels like radiation to the cochlea is what is causing it.

Hi TJ,
Sorry to hear about the tinnitus...
Has it got louder suddenly or slowly?

One of the reasons I chose Cyberknife was because of its ability to reduce damage to the cochlear and Brain Stem

Another interesting article here suggesting proactive Gamma Knife is better for hearing preservation than W&W
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21121792

95% hearing preservation for patients with no hearing loss.
Also makes reference to low radiation dose to the cochlear

Sudden Partial hearing loss 5/28/10
Diagnosed 7/4/10
