sudden worsening of symptoms
« on: April 22, 2012, 07:06:38 pm »
I went camping this weekend, sometime around 11pm last night while sitting around the campfire I notices my hearing has degraded quite a bit and my tinnitus has taken over.  We had the radio on very low, no way that it was loud enough to cause damage, as any camper would know a loud radio would have brought the park ranger over, especially after 10pm.  I had a few beers, but by no means was I even buzzed, let alone drunk.  It was chilly out, but not cold.  I was shocked to wake up this morning and find no improvement.  If my hearing was at 90% before, I'd guess it to be about 50-60% now, all within an hours time or so.  When i got home today I kayed down and found that if I lay still the tinnitus lessons, movement such as turning my head would cause almost a whistle in my ear such as when the wind is blowing into your ear.  I'm about 2 1/2 months into wait and watch with my next MRI in April, although I expected hearing to deteriorate, I did not expect it to be this quickly an as sudden.  Will call the doc tomorrow first thing, perhaps steroids could help.

I attended my sons raquetball banquet tonight and was nearly in tears realizing I could only hear sound on my AN side but can't make out the words.  Another thing, my ears are extremely sensitive to everything, IP everything sounds sharp, if that makes sense.

I would suggest following through with your doctor to get on steroids.  They helped to get my hearing back when I initially lost it back in 2009.  After the initial dose of steroids, my home remedy was high doses of Ibuprofen.  It's an anti-inflammatory and it worked.  It doesn't work anymore, but it did for a couple of years.

Called the doc first thing, he is out for the day but his nurse haspd me come in for a hearing test.  Results were worse than I expected, a decline AC cross the board in all frequencies, previously it was just the higher frequency.  The worst the was the speech discriminatupion which dropped from 90% to 48%.  I was pretty close in my guess of 50-60%.  She faxed my test results to the doc and he promptly called in a prednisone script ...130 of those tablets over the next 2 weeks, then follow up in 3 weeks for another hearing test.
I'm very pleased with my decision to chose this doc, they got me in within 20 minutes of my call, the time it took me to drive over.  Love Dr. B.

I am so happy that they were quick to put you on a course of prendisone.  I hope they do the job they're supposed to do for you and that the outcome is W&W for a while longer.

It's great to read about doctors who care nowadays and have our best interests in mind.  Well done on your choice.

Warmest wishes,

Just a quick update.  I'm 5 days into the steroids and it does seem to working.  My best guess is that i am at about 65% in the speech discrimination department.  9 more days of this, then another week before an official hearing test.  Glad I acted fast.

 ;D Great news Becky.
Do you find that you are sleeping less on the steroids?  When I was on them, I only slept around 3 hours a night!

Best wishes,

Yes, some nights I find it close to impossible to fall asleep until at least 1am.  The good part is that we recently had a staff reduction at work and I'm piled to the hilt with work but have all this extra energy.  Today was rough though, got a bit shaky for an hour or so.   6 more days.

The countdown is well and truly on Becky.

It's good to keep busy and even better when you're getting paid for it LOL  Please do take a break when you get that shaky feeling.  I think it's our body's way of telling us to sit down.

Keep on keeping on and so will I.

Hugs,
