Seasonal allergies and balance
« on: April 11, 2012, 08:44:11 am »
I have experienced dramatic balance problems beginning about 7 weeks ago, right as the pollen started getting bad.  These issues continued until recently as the pollen has diminished.  My pharmacist told me that the allergy season has been so bad and that allergies have a negative impact on some folks ears.  Any thoughts on this?

My balance does seem to get worse as my other allergy symptoms worsen.  Probably due to sinus pressure from all the pollen affecting the inner ear as well.

Hi Ned,

This time of year can be very difficult to AN suffers.  Our symptoms from our AN seem to become magnified by the allergy season.  I have a whole pharmacy in my medicine cabinet for this time of year.  I believe someone told me that rain actually makes the pollen count worse, but I don't know for sure.  Here in the Northeast we are having a very dry season and my allergies have been much better this year then last.

I too have experienced similar issues.  You will also find whenever weather systems move in that cause the barometric pressure to go up or down quickly will throw you off.  Just some of the little nice surprises these nice things gives us as parting gifts! :)

Thank goodness, for the wise posts on this site. I too have allergy/balance issues, weather does make a difference. I also have a cupboard full of allergy medication. If I listened to my specialist,i(ts all in my  head), pardon the pun..... My little friends would make no difference to my life. Maybe they should  come on this site and gather some factual information.

Ned -

Thanks so much for starting this thread... I too have allergies and have experienced more balance issues following CK than before now it makes sense to me that my sinus issues are contributing ... so simple and yet so obscure to me.  Many thanks for the enlightenment.

I so agree with you regarding that doctors should visit this site!

This past week has been especially bad for me since (I think) I had sinus problems.  I went to an associate of my ENT who had no clue.  He told me once they pass an AN patient off to the neurotologist they don't do follow up care.  He also told me to make an appointment with the neurotologist.  So come Monday I'll be on interminable hold waiting for the appointment desk.

Shouldn't be surprised but was how much of a difference my sinus problem made with my balance / dizziness issues.  When I got into a coughing spell it seemed to take minutes for my head to settle down again.

I also mentioned to the ENT that since my CK procedure that only my left nostril has been running a lot.  He said that maybe the radiation has "disturbed" the nerve that controls the nose.  Wonderful!

Any way, hope all of you are on the mend from allergies and sinus problems.
