BALANCE AND DIZZINESS
« on: July 01, 2009, 08:53:47 pm »
JULY 2007 I HAD AN ACOUSTIC NEUROMA REMOVED. FOLLOWING SURGERY I HAD SPINAL FLUID DRAINING OUT MY NOSE AND ON DAY FIVE MY FACE DROPPED ON THE SURGERY SIDE. I WAS AT THE HOSPITAL ELEVEN DAYS. MY RECOVERY TIME WAS EIGHT MONTHS LONG. AT THAT TIME I HAD RECOVERED FROM THE DIZZNESS WITH THERAPY. BALANCED IMPROVED GRADUALLY, BUT HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN ISSUE. MY FACE RETURNED TO NORMAL WITH SOME NUMBNESS STILL. OVERALL I HAD BEEN DOING QUITE WELL.

JUNE OF 2009 I HAD SURGERY TO REMOVE A  TUMOR ON MY HIP. I WAS SEDATED WITH A LOCAL TWILIGHT AND SINCE SURGERY I HAVE RELAPSED. I AM DIZZY AGAIN WITH BALANCE ISSUES, BUT NOT TO THE EXTENT THAT I WAS IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE AN SURGERY. MORE LIKE THE LAST TWO MONTHES OF MY AC RECOVERY. I WENT TO MY ENT DR. AND HE INFORMED ME THAT THE PROPAFAL INTHE ANESTHETIC MAY HAVE TRIGGER A RELAPSE IN MY BRAIN. HE SAID I WILL IMPROVE BUT IT COULD TAKE UP TO SIX MONTHS TO RECOVER. I AM JUST WONDERING HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS AFTER A DIFFERENT TYPE OF SURGERY FOLLOWING AN SURGERY?

Linda Mae .....

Welcome to this AN Forum!!  I cannot respond to your question as I have not had another surgery since my AN surgery.  However, in my non-medically trained opinion, any general anesthesia can cause balance issues afterwards in otherwise healthy people so I would guess your ENT is correct.  As to length of recovery time, that too could vary a great deal.  Hopefully you will be back to what you were before much more quickly than projected.

There are others currently active on this Forum who have had additional surgeries who will post on here soon, I am sure.

Again, welcome and stay around ..... it is a wonderful support group!

THANKYOU FOR YOUR REPLY CLARICE. I'M NEW TO THIS SITE AND DID NOT KNOW ABOUT IT UNTIL RECENTLY. I THANK GOD EVERYDAY FOR WHAT I DO HAVE. JUST WANT TO IMPROVE AGAIN.  I KNOW I WILL AGAIN IN TIME, JUST NEED TO BE PATIENT. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN THE TYPE TO PUSH MYSELF AND CONTINUE TO.

I actually think that while 6 months might apply to an "ordinary" person, a seasoned AN veteran such as yourself can recover quicker - it might be just a matter of weeks.  8)

STEVE, I FEEL THE SAME AS YOU DO. I DEFINITELY CAN TELL A DIFFERENCE.  AFTER MY AN SURGERY IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO RECOVERY TO WHERE I COULD FUNCTION ADEQUATELY ENOUGH TO GET BY. I REALLY HAD TO PUSH MYSELF AS DOES ANY POST AN RECOVERY PATIENT .

I'M READY TO FACE THIS AGAIN. I KNOW I WILL BE BACK TO WHERE I WAS IN TIME. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR INPUT.
