Titanium Mesh and MRI Safety
« on: October 17, 2013, 08:53:15 am »
About to schedule my 1 year follow up MRI and being offered options of 3T, 1.5T and what I assume is a 1.0T machine.

I understand that T stands for 'Tesla' and denotes the magnetic strength of the scan.

Is there any safety concern with having titanium mesh and using a higher strength machine, 3T or 1.5T, to get the best image?

Thanks,

Ken

Titanium is a non-magnetic metal so it is safe for MRI's. I have a titanium plate and screws for my cranioplasty and have had 2 MRI's after surgery. Since titanium is non-magnetic to begin with, the MRI strength does not matter.

I have a variety of titanium things in my skull (see signature below) and have had no problems with MRIs whatsoever ..... including the last one with a 3T machine.
