Title: Is it possible that the hearing can come back?
Post by: Arasha on October 05, 2008, 04:40:58 pm
Hello everybody,

I have a question, my hearing nerve was not severed during my operation and my hearing was very good before the surgery. I still have the hope that my hearing could come back. Has anyone recovered their hearing? I asked to my audiologist and the answer was "Nobody knows". I ordered my transear already and I will get it next Wednesday, October the 8th !!!.  I can't wait to have it, my husband is a bit worried, he thinks if it doesn't fill my expectations I could be sad, well, let's see; already I have been sad since I lost my hearing after the surgery.

Hi Donnalynn;

Thanks for your words at encouragement. Nothing is impossible in this life and I am happy to have read what you wrote. I wish you a good recovering.

For sure I will post my experience with the TransEar.

Take care,
Gloria

Gloria -

hearing returning after surgery pretty much depends on the type of AN surgery you had.

It's not impossible for those who had mid fossa or retrosigmoid to regain their hearing, and I believe I read somewhere on this forum recently, that it's even possible with translab.

I see that you had your AN removed endoscopically.  I don't know the odds of hearing returning with this type of surgery, but I'm sure the doctor who performed your surgery could tell you.

As for the TransEar, those on the forum who use them are very happy with the results, so I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Let us know how you like it.

I also lost my hearing due to swelling from the surgery and not a severed nerve 5 years ago.  Last year I got a TransEar and it does improve my everyday life.  I still feel mostly non-hearing in the right ear BUT I can sense people talking to me on the deaf side and then I just have to turn my head slightly rather than all the way.  When I drive, I now can hear the person in the passenger's seat, as long as the radio is low. My husband has noticed that when he calls to me from another room, now I hear him.  These are really BIG changes.  Eating out and just going into noisy placed is more comfortable.  Please ask me any other questions or concerns you may have.  I dropped my TransEar and broke it after just a couple of months and when a did not have it for a few weeks I really noticed the difference. :)

Hi Jan,

Thank you for your reply. I called today to my doctor (who made the surgery) but could not reach him, the nurse called him by phone and he asked me to fax  the last exam about my hearing, then he will check my history, hopefully I will have a reply on thursday.

Thanks for your time,
Gloria

Hello Leftie,

Thanks for your comments. I can't wait to have my TransEar and I hope it will work on me, but I still will keep waiting for my hearing, let's see what the doctor say :-/.  I am concerning about this because the last weeks I was feeling something strange in my AN ear, for example a strong and quick buzzzzz and sometimes I feel that my hearing it is not too worse like I have read in the forum. I will wait for more weeks and will get another exam to know if I am really recovering my hearing or not.

Hug,
Gloria

I'd be interested in hearing what your doctor has to say about this (no pun intended).

Please let us know what he says.

Thanks,

Jan

Hi Gloria,

I had a mid fossa 6 weeks ago. I had a hearing test at my 4 week exam. They told me that once the fluid in my ear goes away I will hear as good as i did before. It seems to SLOWLY be going away, as I seem to be hearing ever so slightly more out of my AN ear.

Gloria,

Before my retrosig surgery in June, my hearing was around 60-80%, with the 60 being voice recognition. During surgery my hearing nerve was preserved, though I did experience additional hearing loss. I haven't had a hearing test since my surgery so I don't know how the numbers compare. However, I do know that my hearing has improved since the surgery. I know it will never be 100% again, but I think it's close to what it was before surgery.

I can't remember if you've mentioned this before, but I just wanted to say it's wonderful news  ;D

I had retrosigmoid and ended up SSD, so I'm happy to see that's not the case for everyone who chooses this approach.

Syl,

It is nice to be reminded that you got some hearing back after surgery. And how are you doing, by the way? Is work fun yet?  ;)

Jan: I don't think I had mentioned getting back some hearing. It's part of my signature, but I know that doesn't get read each time. Though I'm still challenged with some dizzines much of the time and take otc Tylenol with my breakfast, lunch and dinner on a daily basis for the headaches, I can't stop counting my blessings.

Steve: I went back to work part-time for 1 week, then right back to full-time the following week. It's definitely been a challenge. Very exhausting, but having the routine helps life feel progressively more normal.

guess since I've known you for a while now, I overlooked your new signature information.  I tend to read it when someone is a newbie and tune out from that point on.  Probably not a good idea - as a lot of our situations change over time.

Time seems to heal a lot of AN side-effects.  I'm hopeful your headaches go away and that your dizziness gets better very soon.

In my experience, the exhaustion you are feeling since your return to work will go away in time also.  It takes a while - I can't remember how long in my case - but you'll be back to being "yourself" eventually.

Hang in there,

Jan

Hi Gloria,
I have the same good hearing that I did before surgery, though immediately after it was sketchy.  I think Hruss on this forum regained hearing after two retrosigmoids, you should look for her.  I think it came back quite a while after surgery which might be more relevant to your case. Good luck.

Hi Debbi and everybody who were sharing with me my post.

I let you know that, I got my TransEar at Oct. 8th but IT DIDN'T WORK!!!, as soon as the doctor put in my ear, I did not notice any difference with or without it, I told the doctor I think I can hear better without it, he insisted that I will notice the difference once the brain is adapted and it could happen within the 8 days!!; the first day I used it 4-5 hours, no improvementes in my hearing at all!!! I just got a big migraine that didnt let me sleep all night long.
The day after I called to the TransEar Co and asked them if there is a history that the hearing aid can not work in someone, the lady asked me some information and she told me that she will call me back in few minutes, what she did is to call to the doctor and asked him to make another mold, she assumes that the mold was not done in a correct way.

The same day I went to return my TransEar and let them to make another mold....1 month more!!! is what I need to wait until they make another TransEar, I hope this can work on me.  DOES SOMEONE KNOW IF THE TRANSEAR CAN NOT WORK FOR SOME REASON???? .  I feel so dissapointed and sad!!!

Regarding to the question of the topic, the doctor told me: EVEYTHING IS POSSIBLE, CROSS YOUR FINGERS!!!, so I will keep waiting for my hearing someday will come back!!!

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with your TransEar  :(

I'm a BAHA user, so I don't really know how to help you - other than to suggest you PM either Boppie or Kbonner.  They both have a TransEar and might be able to offer your some assistance.

Good luck,

Jan

Hi Gloria,

Sorry to hear about the TransEar not working. Maybe Rick the TransEar guy will come along and have a better answer for you. It does make sense that how well the mold fits would matter, since it has to make contact in order to send the sound through your skull bone to the other side. If it didn't contact correctly, it would not send any sound over.

Hopefully they will get it right the second time, and you will hear a difference.

Good point, Steve.

From what I've heard (no pun intended) fit is key with the TransEar.

Thank you Jan, I agree with that,  for that reason it is very important to know if the center when we are going to get the hearing aid had experiences with the TransEar, unfortunatelly i could not get a reply in my topic where i asked if someone got there.

Take care,
Gloria

Gloria,

Wow I thought I was the only one.  I had 28 fsr treatments.  Before and after I had very little hearing in my AN side ear, but  I could still hear the dial tone on the telephone very faintly.  Six months after fsr, It was completely silent.  Couldn't hear faintly at all.  Then about 1 year later I can now hear the dialtone very faintly again.

Gloria:

I checked this morning and found that your NEW TransEar was shipped Friday. Because we replaced the broken one with our brand new, just-announced new model, the lab did not provide me with any diagnostic codes, so I don't know what happened with your first TransEar. The new model is TransEar380-HF, and you will be one of the first in the country (other than beta testers) to receive it. It represents a major breakthrough IMO, and it is also much more reliable (more shock-resistant) than previous models. I think you will love it!

Sorry you had problems, and you know where to find me if they resurface.
