Alternative painkillers to vicodin/hydrocodone?
« on: April 05, 2006, 07:33:07 pm »
I was wondering if anybody could suggest painkillers that are not opioid-based (since those have been linked to hearing loss).  I realize the chance of hearing loss is small, but you take fewer risks with one good ear!

Thanks!

Acertyx..thanks for sharing very interesting.  I've been on a variety of different pain killers over the years but wouldn't know if they were "opioid" based or not.  I'd suggest you email ppearl and ask her becasue her dad is a pharmacist and might have an answer for you.  he's a very nice guy just got off the phone with phyl and he was talking too.

Thanks for sharing!

arcteryx,

My dad will be here tonight for dinner. I am printing this out for my dad so he can try to help answer (he's been a "drug pusher"/pharmacist for over 40 yrs and hoping he can help you with your question.)

Will have a reply for you later.

arcteryx,

I spoke to my dad... there are a couple of options.

Tramadol (Ultram), usually dispensed as 50 mg.  They also just came out with a time-released version (which, trust me, makes me happier than a pig in well... you know what!).... other option is Ultraset, which is a combo of Tramadol and Tylenol. You may want to check on these with your physician. Hope it helps.
