Hi Donnalynn,

Just stopped by to say I was thinking about you and hoping that Jim is doing ok.  Sure is nice to read so much helpful information for you, got my fingers crossed that it will help with Jim's recovery.  Jill

Good morning, Donnalynn
I've been out of town, just checking in to see how you two are doing.
Amazing that you DO have connections, and still can't get what you need in the way of PET scan.
You are an amazingly strong, persistent, intelligent woman & you  keep going  and going..(what choice do you have), kind of like the Energizer Bunny commercial :)
By the time people offer advice,it's like you've already tried that!
So hugs to you and Jim, and keep the faith, keep persisting. It will all come together :-*

Donnalynn ~

Thank you for that encouraging update!   Suffice it to say that I'm thrilled to learn that prayers are being answered and your Jim seems to be improving.  May the good news continue!

I was just thinking that we must have passed through the three week critical period by now. I am so pleased that Jim is feeling better and pray that he continues to heal. The 15th will be here in a flash - I am taking my MIL for a biopsy of a spot on her bladder that same day. There will be lots of prayers on the 15th.

Sending my love,

Hi:

I'm new around here but want to share my prayers and concern.  I had a pulmonary embolism last year and know how scary it can be.  About the never ending blood thinners and food; eat what you think is most healthy but eat it regularly.  The more evenly you eat and exercise the easier it is to regulate.

I'm a fun and reasonable RN, now living far from appropriate medical care. Feeling overwhelmed!

Donnalynn,

Make sure you check with your doctor before trying the natural route for this.  I understand your concern, but I think the benefits of the coumadin outweigh the risks.  I was on it for year for a blood clot and had no adverse effects and it took care of the problem.  With the severity of Jim's case, the doctor may want his INR even higher than 2-3, and that might be hard to achieve and regulate through diet alone.

Once I got my dose to where it needed to be, I just had to have it checked once a month and make sure I practiced some moderation in my diet.  So, not eating 20 pounds of spinach at one sitting was out, but fortunately, that wasn't really a problem.

Hope things are going well!!

I agree with Lori about staying on the Coumadin.      I have a friend who is on it long term and she told recently how her INR really jumped higher than you think it would when she was eating more of a couple foods  than she usually did.          I haven't talked to her since to see how it is now as that was maybe 3 weeks ago.            Jim isn't the usual type of pt using it so has to be careful!

Donnalynn .....

Adding my agreement about the Coumadin.  Keeping the INR between 2 & 3 is a real balancing act.  Truman was told that it takes three days before changes in Coumadin dosage or extra Vitamin K rich food intake for it to show up in the INR.  I would be very careful about this without very frequent INR checks.  Truman's INR went from 4.2 to 1.9 in a week during his early months on Coumadin.  This is one of those instances where you really need to be cautious.

Many thoughts and prayers continue.
