Free Assessment Of MRI Scans
« on: September 12, 2006, 04:48:41 am »
My recent initial query from the UK re proposed surgery with an organisation in the States was met with a request for $600 for a prelim telephone discussion (consultation?) albeit I had originally asked what the total cost of the op would be and was not given that requisite info.

I have read many posts where mention is made of a free assessment of MRI scans at HEI but have never read of any feedback from anyone who has taken advantage of the offer.

I would be interested to hear of responses from anyone who has had the free assessment with any relevant comment.

Regards

Derek
Residing UK. In 'watch & wait' since diagnosis in March 2002 with right side AN. Initially sized at 2.5cm and now self reduced to 1.3cm.
All symptoms have abated except impaired hearing on affected side which is not a problem for me.

Yep, Called .. and then sent the MRI, received a call a couple of days later .. talked to Dr. Brachmann called.. (not just the nurse!) .. and talked again about 3 times I think, emails sent about BAHA, and made the appointment to have surgery done at HEC ... I did give him the Insurance info on the first call .. but only because I had questions about if they would accept it  ...(and they did!)

Strange I went down this path a few years ago - UK to the states
I got free MRI interpretation from Noren, House Ear and I think Hopkins as well
You need the electronic copy of the scans to be able to do it
I used the same approach when booking either NHS or private appts in the
UK - it helped to focus the staff - that I was serious
Best regards
Tony

I sent a CD of my MRI by Fed Ex.  The phone call from Dr. Slattery at House Ear Clinic took about a week so don;t get discouraged if they don';t call within 24 hrs. as advertised.

Many thanks for your individual responses.

The US organisation which I have been in contact with has quoted me $86,300 for their treatment option which involves endoscopic surgery. My medical insurance does not cover treatment outside of the UK so I will not be progressing my treatment options Stateside.

Within the UK the average cost of removal of an AN via microsurgery is approx £12,000 and £14,000 for GK treatment...not sure how that converts into US dollars but it appears that AN treatment is vastly cheaper this side of the Atlantic.
