Neck Pain and Headaches
« on: February 16, 2007, 12:54:01 pm »
In addition to my previous post...

As I mentioned, I suffer from some pretty bad headaches. I always felt this was due to my sore neck. Is neck pain also a symptom of AN?

Thanks
ingy

YES! I suffered with neck pains for years. I thought it was my pillow. Once a month I would buy another one. Before my surgery I couldn't look at the computer 5 min. before my neck and head would be killing me. But now I can look at this computer as long as I like with no problems.

Ellis, you just made me think of something... did you have brain stem involvement with your AN pre-surgery?  I know of others here that had brain stem involvement, so I guess that would bring on neck pain?   (I just had a cup of coffee... I must be thinking again).

Oh great!  You know I have suffered from headaches pretty much my whole life. None of those headaches feel like these do. The neck pain is so bad somtimes, I can't even turn my head.  Range of Motion is lousy all time when turning my head to the left
( problem ear). I can get a headache from this neck pain in an instant.  I have an MRI booked for March 3. I am kind of hoping for a dx..finally. Then I can get going and deal with it. Thinking about my symptoms, I just can't imagine what else it could be...

Ingy, I don't know if neck pain is An related or not but I do have it at times along with some spacey head feelings then. My doc says the head is due to the neck. I do have some vertebral things going on in the neck ( an mri more recently showed the neck situation) Actually I don't know what causes my stiff neck at this point.  All i know is I get it and also the occassional different kind of headache now.....

I am having some serious neck pain/stiffness right now as well.  I was pretty sure it was brought on by stress.....Who knows...I saw a better view of my MRI and the tumor was pressing against the brain stem. Laying on a heating pad seemed to help some last night, but today it is terrible, especially when I first get up from sitting in my chair even though I do have my head resting against the back of my chair.

I have read about this tumors ability to grow to a size that it would compromise the brain stem. Gee, I thought I was freaked before, now I am thinking that this could be worse than I thought. I try not to jump to conclusions and I really try not to self dx, but I am a 45 yr old student nurse and I am learning about this stuff which makes it worse. I must be patient and wait for my MRI on March 3. Then I have to wait a month to see my specialist. Things don't move too fast here in Ontario. I just feel that this recent (6mths) neck pain is due to something other than arthritis. :-\
Thank you so much for all your input.

I had neck pain and attributed it to my previous neck injury.  The headaches too.  It wasn't until the surgeon started me on decadron prior to surgery that I realized my headaches were different than they normally were.

Try heat compresses for your neck and gentle massage.  No adjustments from the chiropratctor!

I had my surgery in 1/2005, retrosimoid approach removing a 1.5cm AN.  I can experience neck pain also and if ignored leads to a headache.  I discovered this while I was walking my dog.  My field of vision bounces up and down while walking, which is due to recently diagnosed nystagmus.   As I am looking straight ahead I began to notice how my neck muscles were constantly working to keep me upright.  By the time I am home I feel tired, my head feels full and there is tension in my neck spreading up to my skull.  Being a massage therapist and yoga teacher I have helped myself with self massage using my fingertips and thumbs all over the tight areas of my neck, occiput (back of head), and jaw muscles.  After this I will stretch the neck in all directions holding each position while inhaling fully and slowly for 5 breaths for two rounds.  I found pointing my chin up (which contracts the necks muscles) would hurt at first, but after the second go around the muscles released.  Sometimes I will use yellow tennis balls placed in a sock holding them together positioning the balls on the occiput muscles.  Then I slowly move them down the neck, breathing slowly at each move and then reverse the process.  This has helped to relieve the tensed muscles caused I believe by the head constantly moving in micro incrimints to keep us balanced and upright.

Oh yeah I love tennis balls...only sometimes they aren't big enough so I use some funky looking orange balls with bumps on them which help too!...My brother uses phonebooks and the wooden edge of his waterbed to put pressure on his sub occipital to help relieve migraines.  I say we all let arushi give us a neck and head massage!  I've got a doctors order  ;D
