« on: May 04, 2008, 05:02:04 am »
My surgery is Friday, May 9th.  I know everyone is different, but how long were you in ICU and then also the rest of your stay?
Thanks so much :)
Had surgery (retrosigmoid) May 9th, 2008 to remove a 3.5cm AN from left side.
Home one week later, no facial nerve damage.

I had surgery on a Thursday and I think I was moved from ICU on Saturday?! I was in a bad fog from pain meds until the following Friday when they finally took me off the heavy paid meds and I was moved to an inpatient rehab for 8 days. Total hospital stay was 16 days.

Is your surgeon  one who does AN surgery on a frequent basis?         It is very important that we all go to a surgeon who does them on a weekly basis and very experienced with them.     I hope that is what you are doing.          There are occ drs who say they will do them and do maybe a couple a year and one needs to not do this and make sure and go somewhere to a dr who does them on  frequent basis.      One ends up in the best shape this way.                 One can put up with in most cases with time till one makes sure you have the best dr.             You will have the best results from surgery if this happens.
If you end up with no hearing it is something to get used it but one does in time.
What size is your AN?                                       Cheryl R

Nicole-

I just updated WABs post about my surgery this week.  My surgery started at 8:30 Weds of last week, and I checked out of the hospital yesterday morning by 10:30 AM.  Against all odds!  Having experienced AN surgeons is key.

Good luck!

Nichole
My surgery was Monday AM -- first day and a half in ICU.  Wednesday in a hospital room.  Ready to go Thursday and eat real food.  Had to stay till Friday morning.  I think three to four days with no complications is standard.

Best wishes

Nicole -

as you probably know, most docs say 4-7 days in the hospital.

I was there for 5 nights - but only because I was so nauseaus that I wasn't eating and the nutritionist refused to let me go until I did so.  Not eating also meant I didn't have enough strength to be walking the halls like the docs wanted me to, so I was in the hospital one more night that I really should have been.  I guess the moral of this story is eat and walk  ;)

I was never in a separate ICU room.  The hospital I had my surgery at puts you in a regular room and just calls it "ICU" until they decide to downgrade it.  I believe I was technically in "ICU" for about 24 - 36 hours.

I don't actually "make" trouble..just kind of attract it, fine tune it, and apply it in new and exciting ways

I had surgery on Tuesday; out of surgery about 4:30 PM (8 hours) and spent the night in Intensive Care.  I was moved to a step-down bed Wednesday and to a regular room on Thursday.  I came home Sunday

Linda,

You are now a "postie".   Your 24 hour stay in ICU appears to be a common protocal. It is amazing that persons often are in the hospital less than a week for brain surgery.  How far medicine has come.

How are you doing?

Nicole,

My middle fossa surgery was on a Thursday (about 4 hours).  I was in ICU 24 hours, in a regular room on Friday night and discharged Sunday.  It was a four day stay at St. Vincents in California.

May 9th is right around the corner! Keep us posted afterword.

I had surgery on a Wed, morning, spent the night in ICU moved to a regular room on Thurs. and discharged on Monday.  I too was having some issues with eating and they wanted to make sure I was able to eat a "regular diet" before I went home.  Good luck to you.

Wow, the hospital stays have definitely gotten shorter since '89! The average stay then was a full week--my surgeon kept me 10 days because I would be flying home across the country immediately after. It's good to know they get us back in our own beds ASAP (especially as it's so hard to get a real night's sleep in a hospital...)

Best of luck with your surgery, Nicole!
