BAHA site healing extremely well
« on: April 29, 2009, 03:24:34 pm »
I just got back from my one week follow up with the surgeon. He took off the bandage and the healing cap. He told me that I was healing so well, that I am "at least one week ahead of schedule".  ;D

Lisa ~

Great news - and thanks for sharing it with us.  BAHA: here comes Lisa!  :D

Jim
4.5 cm AN diagnosed 5/06.  Retrosigmoid surgery 6/06.  Follow-up FSR completed 10/06.  Tumor shrinkage & necrosis noted on last MRI.  Life is good.

Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is.  The way we cope with it is what makes the difference.

Feels great to be going "commando" :P without the patch.

Sorry about the itch, Mike. The Dr. told me to "put some anti-biotic ointment on it once it a while", so I have done it yet. Do you think that's contributing to the itch? I will probably put some on tonight after I wash it.

No the itching is the healing of it but the oinment is to keep the area moist and clean of infection. Dr. wants me twice a day morning and night to put it on after using proxide on a Q tip. She said the key is to keep it moist so the skin grafted does not dry out. The itching comes and goes. When my wife snaps the healing cap on I can hear it in my head if that makes any sense and scratching the healing cap to. " not the skin just the healing cap it is cool ". I can not wash the area yet she does not want that for another week or two .

Congratulations, Lisa.  If you're a week ahead of schedule, does that mean you'll win that race with Mike?  ;)

Very surprised your doc said to only put ointment on the site "once in a while" - I had to put ointment on my site daily.  Not for the entire 3 months post op, but for at least a week or two as I recall.

I'm also surprised that Mike's doctor told him to use peroxide.  Won't peroxide dry out the skin?

I always find it so interesting to see what different docs say.

Hi Jan,

Yes it is surprising how doctor's orders and procedures are so different for us all.
I don't even have a healing cap. I asked if I should put gauze over the ointment, and he told me it wasn't necessary. I did anyway, so it doesn't get in my hair or my pillowcase. I can wash my hair as normal as soon as I want.

Yeah, I say I'd I'm about a 1/2 lap ahead of Mike :P

Hey,  ;D 1/2 a lap is not to bad but watch out  :o  I can not believe he does not have a healing cap on it every web site I have been on said you had to have a healing cap. Then again I am not a Dr. so what do I know lol. But my Doc said It is doing great to plus my stitches are starting to dissolve. So I think the half of a lap just got smaller  :P . Anyway I am glad to her you are doing good how is work?

I don't understand about not using the healing cap, either. I guess I'll just trust he has a reason. When he took it off, I did say, "Oh, I don't need the cap?" To which he replied' Nope". Then we moved on to after care, and the pain in my scalp, which is most likely nerve pain. I had the same exact thing happen after GK, due to the headframe. The surgery is less than an inch from where one of the pin sites was.

I haven't had to work since Tuesday, but I have a long day tomorrow, I hope I can make it, I am still stuggling with the fatigue. My theory as to why I am healing so fast is that that is where ALL my energy is going ::)

the top of my head to the surgery site is numb.

In my experience it will be that way for a while.

Head numbness is one of the side-effects of AN surgery - lots of us are numbskulls  ;) - so you were lucky to miss that part, Mike.

When I had my BAHA surgery and the doc shot my skull full of lidocaine I didn't even feel the needle.  That was nine months after my AN surgery and my head was still numb.

The feeling has returned to most of head, but parts of it are still numb and my AN surgery was almost 2 years ago.
