Negative MRI results?
« on: January 11, 2007, 05:08:35 am »
Hi, I posted in symptoms regarding a negative MRI result, just in case its missed i thought i would title the topic more appropriately.

I have all the symptoms of a AN, my ENT specialist sent me for a MRI in a mobile unit, lasted for 10mins, with no contrast, it came up with a negative result. I have had one reply from someone so far regarding a negative result with contrast, has anyone else had a negative result with a MRI with or witout contrast. If you did have a negative reslut, how long was it before the AN was found?

Thanks you for your help.

Best wishes

Jacey

HI Jacey,
Insist on a second MRI.  A friend of mine had a similar experience here in Ireland and she organised her own MRI. Second time they found a small 7mm An that was giving her some significant symptoms. ANs can be missed if they are small, and sometime they can have a big impact on us even if they're small. Then again, maybe it could be something different? Have they checked for other possibilities? I don't know what your symptoms are.
Allt he best, Lorenzo

Hi Jacey,

Doesn't seem like your first MRI was done the way it should have been done.  AN's show up much better if contrast is used - dye injected into your arm and quickly makes its way to your brain.  They they just glow.  I agree that you should get a second one done.  My MRI's usually last 40 minutes or so.

Good luck,

Jacey,

Sue and Lorenzo are correct.  It could be something else... and without IV Contrast during the MRI, it's very difficult to make a conclusive diagnosis.  Maybe another dr would be of help (2nd opinion) as well.  10 min MRI is wow!.... mine have all lasted just approx 1 hr.

Hang in there and hoping they resolve your medical issues soon.

FYI,

I week before I had contrast with MRI I had a CAT Scan w/o contrast and a MRI w/o contrast. Three days after this I lost all hearing in my left hear. I went to local neurotologist and he ordered one with contrast. There was a 1.0 cm x .7 cm x .6 cm acoustic neuroma that could not be missed. I look at the old MRI and can't find a thing on it. Look at the one a week later and it is lit up like a christmas tree. Insist on another MRI with contrast.

Def get another mri with contrast.  It takes about 45 mins to an hour.  mobile unit mri sounds interesting.  Not something I think I'd want to do.

let us know how things go!

i really appreciate your replies, yes, im going to insist on another MRI with contrast this time. I should be hearing from them in a day or so, to see the specialist and i will let him know what i know about ANs. You wouldve thought that if they were looking for a AN, that contrast wouldve been used, maybe the consultant didnt think about asking for it when he shouldve? Well, I will let you know what happens as an when so to speak.

Best wishes to everyone

Hi all

I just wanted to tell someone, nothing dramatic or anything but, just had a phone call from the hospital, at 8am!! It took me by surprise a bit, you probably know by now how slow the NHS can be at times. The lady said i need to be seen this week and made an appointment for me for tomorrow, is it because i complained to my GP last week, or something else. Well, i will let you know tomorrow the outcome. Im starting to feel nervous already, have they now found something or will i have to battle for the second opinion? (the latter i reckon)!

Best wishes to everyone.

Jacey

Jacey...Ensure that you get the maximum input from your consultation and do not be 'fobbed off'. Best of luck and we look forward to how it all went for you.

Hi All

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, it means a lot, thank you.

Well, oh dear, what an ongoing nightmare, sat at the clinic for 1 hour and 15 mins, to then be told that i had been booked in at the wrong clinic  >:( !!  Its supposed to be on Thursday. So, now im waiting to hear from the clinic this afternoon to book me in. I cant begin tell you what the frustration is like. Its just one thing after another.

So, will let you know the ongoing saga, later in the week!!

Bye for now.

Jacey.

Hang on in there Jacey...no wonder folk go 'private' to avoid such NHS bureaucratic blunders which merely adds to the stress.

Best of luck.

`If I may say so, the NHS sounds just as bad as the irish system that kicked me out. Fantastic care. Fortunately at least we have the option of going private. Hang in there Jacey, we're all wih you!
