Deviated Septum

My nose is on my face therefore I will assume this goes under facial issues...lol. I had my AN removed 2 years ago this past Memorial Day, hard to believe time has gone by so fast.  My current issue today..(well, I’ll keep that to a minimum as I feel I have a few but TODAY’S current issue)..I feel as if I have had a continuous mild slight sore throat for like a month now...my throat seems itchy quite a bit and my nose is always stuffy.  Now, about 6 months ago my PCP did inform me that I have a deviated septum which I strongly feel as does she came from my AN/facial paralysis... My stuffiness and breathing issues were not there prior to surgery.  The sore throat has just been recently noticeable...  Just curious to see if there is anyone else that is experiencing the same thing and if anyone chose to do septoplasty to correct it.  I am a bit of a hypochondriac (if I can get a brain tumor ......) so I always fear the worst and worry that I have throat cancer or something but it would make sense with a deviated septum I would think.....  Anyone?

I have had an uncorrected deviated septum for about forty years. Since my AN surgery and with substantial nasal allergy symptoms it has become unmanageable, therefore, I plan on surgical correction within the next year. My chronic sinus is due to pollen in summer and dust in winter.

As part of my AN surgery, the skin on the left side of my face was pulled tight and my deviated septum was slightly corrected. Since that time, six years post-op, my nose again points askew and the skin on the right side of my face droops more due to natural aging. I’m 65. Also I’ve developed some deep wrinkles on my chin and a little “turkey neck.”

I probably broke my nose when I was still in high school but it mended without medical treatment and did not look odd until several years after my AN surgery. I played a lot of contact sports and was street fighting but I’m not sure what happened, when.

In my case, my deviated septum along with nasal congestion results in mouth breathing while I sleep, snoring, sinus headaches, dry mouth and dry throat.

I cannot say for sure if this is the cause of your dry throat symptoms. I would talk to your ENT specialist about it.

BTW, Drs. Hirsch and Gardner were also my AN surgeons at UPMC. Dr. Hirsch has recommended I see another specialist at their Department of Otolaryngology for nasal surgery. I hope to be able to straighten my nose, face and wrinkles at the same time. Of course, most of the cost of cosmetic mending will not be covered by health insurance.

I am having surgery tomorrow morning in hopes of breathing out of my AN side. My Septoplasty surgery will start at 7:30 am tomorrow. I have been through , still going through so many life changing post surgery issues from my AN but I feel that my quality of life will be better after surgery. I am hoping for improved breathing etc.., only time will tell. But I started with a ENT, then a CAT scan, meeting with surgeon, now this. Please wish me well, and I will report out after if you are interested.

Update, I am 3 days into recovery for my surgery, I also had a collapsed nasal valve repaired which I am sure is linked to my facial weakness. It will be months before I can state surgery effectiveness but I felt I needed to do something given my previous state of not getting any air flow to my surgery side of my face, especially at night laying down. The beat goes on...
