Dr.Soo KIm Abboud AVOID University of Pennsylvania
« on: December 14, 2013, 04:33:28 pm »
I went to Dr. Soo Kim Abboud at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia for tinnitis, clogged feeling in left ear only, hearing loss in left ear only. She is listed as Top Doc in Phila.Magazine for 2012-2013. Her office gave me a hearing test, then I saw Dr. Abboud. She asked me about my condition from across the room, took notes and said there is really nothing that can be done unless you would like to get a hearing aid. END OF STORY. My wife said she didn't like her because she didn't act as if she was even listening. My wife made another appointment this time at Jefferson University Hospital in Phila. Dr. Gregory Artz found my Acoustic Neuroma after talking to me on my first visit said he would like to have an MRI performed because he saw some conditions he was concerned about. Thank God for my wife and Dr.Artz this tumor would have grown unchecked because Dr. Abboud sent me on my way. I HAD CLASSIC SYMPTOMS that she ignored.   >:(
2.1 cm left side
hearing loss , tinnitus, some balance issues
FSR 26 treatments  ending 12/05/13.

Your experience with Dr. Abboud was unfortunate but not every doctor is well acquainted with acoustic neuromas and it would seem as if she wasn't interested enough to investigate your symptoms further.  That is unprofessional but, sadly, not as uncommon as it should be where AN patients are concerned.  I'm pleased to learn that you were able to find a doctor that paid close attention to your symptoms and reacted in a professional manner.

4.5 cm AN diagnosed 5/06.  Retrosigmoid surgery 6/06.  Follow-up FSR completed 10/06.  Tumor shrinkage & necrosis noted on last MRI.  Life is good.

Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is.  The way we cope with it is what makes the difference.

Although I am sure that many people have had good experiences at U Penn, however my visit there was also disastrous. I saw Dr. Ruckenstein who has published several articles about tinnitus and came highly recommended by my ENT. He completely blew me off and I left feeling very demoralized and hopeless. (I posted on my experience here right after the visit)

I'm glad your experience at Jefferson was positive.

Reading about doctors (who are specialists) blowing off symptoms has me feeling very fortunate.  An audiologist picked up that there was a potential problem and referred me to an ENT who sent me for an MRI.  The rest is history.
3/25/13- dx 18x11x14 mm AN, hearing loss in right ear x 5+ years, 5 sessions of CK completed May 2013, now a "post toastie".  Follow up MRI 4/14/14 - 15x19x11 mm. Stable with some signs of necrosis.
 Yippee!
