Hello All,
Bob is currently in the OR and they have made the first incision at 9:20a.m. est. We will be getting updates from the OR nurse about every two hours with his status. T-minus 8hours and counting, until Norbit (aka Bob's tumor) is gone!! I'm here with our girls (Jacq and Nic) for the long haul. So I will try to post the updates accordingly. Thanks for all the support,
 Sue

Hi, Sue and the girls.
Don't be discouraged if you don't get updates.  Dave didn't hear a word until it was all over.  (Same surgeons)  Get a breath of this beautiful day's fresh air from time to time.  Also, the library halfway to the entrance is a quiet refuge if the worry vibes get too intense in the family waiting room.
It will be so exciting for you to see him come out on the other side.
What did you bake? Nevermind, just got caught up on the surgery date thread.  Wow!  Impressive.  That should keep them goin'.
Kisses and hugs to all of you,
Nancy

Hi Sue, Jacq, and Nic,

I've been in your seat before, well maybe not your seat but the first one on the left as you enter the waiting room, at the table ;D

It's now 3:00 p.m. and I believe the updates will stop.  Don't let that alarm you, as I did, it is simply the end of the nurses shift, and they don't do the OR updates on second shift.  The volunteers at the computers can only tell you when the surgery is over.

Try not to put a time on the surgery, that's the worst thing you could do.  Just try to keep your selves busy, and like NancyMc (hi Nancy) said, walk around, check out the library, get a soda, or a bite to eat.

It can truly be a long day.  Bob has the best in my opinion, MGH and Dr. Barker (I don’t know Dr. McKenna).

Thank you for the updates.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers,

Rich and Scarlett

Bob is officially out of surgery!!! They were able to remove the entire tumor in under 8hours. He is currently waking up a bit so they can go over a few checks and tests then he will be transported to the ICU for an overnight stay. They have said that he is already moving his face and everything went perfectly! I just want to say thank you for all the support and all the doctors and staff at MGH for keeping us all in such good spirits and constant contact. Thanks again everyone! ;D

Boss ~

Fantastic news!  Thanks so much for the positive end-of-surgery update!  We're all thinking of, praying and pulling for Bob to have a splendid and complication-free recovery.  So far, it seems as if he's well on his way.  Tell him he's now an 'official postie-toastie' (has undergone both surgery and radiation).  :)

Our support is freely given because we've been there and can empathize with AN patients and their families.  Here's hoping Bob has a peaceful night in ICU.

Sue,

Glad to hear Bob's surgery went so well.  I hope you and the girls are getting some rest too.  It's harder on the family than the patient on surgery day.  We just show up and go to sleep, everyone else has the hard part of waiting and hoping things turn out well.

Give him our best wishes for a speedy recovery,

Good morning Bob and Sue,
I'm glad that parts over. Thinking of you and praying for you today as you begin your recovery (the FUN part!!)
Take care. Thanks, Sue, for posting. All of us mom types get concerned for Bob when he's out in the depths of the ocean with whales and seals and i don't even want to think about what else. Now we're concerned about him in his recovery. I'm hoping you and your daughters can get some rest as you support him and each other in the recovery part of things.

Thanks so much all for helping Sue and girls through this. You're a special crew.
Everything has gone pretty smoothly. Slight facial weakness. Not too noticable unless I smile. DR McKenna assured me it woulld return to normal. OH well, I was kind of hoping to come out looking like Brad Pitt.... ;)

Hey, you look just like I did!  You rocked it, kiddo.  And you are just as handsome as any old Brad Pitt.
I checked out on Saturday, too, so we really are twins.
Is the balance good?
Tell Dr. McKenna and Dr. Barker I said HI!  Did you have McCall and Tierney, too?
Did they love the basket of goodies?
Hey, I couldn't have posted on the second day.  Don't you have double vision?
You're going to be back on that board next week, I'll bet.  Remember, I went out paddling on the ninth day, but I was sitting down in a kayak.

We're glad to see your doing so well, that the Dr's gave you a thumbs up on the facial weakness being temporary, and that you will be going home Saturday.  There's no place like home, there's no place like home ;D

Best wishes to you for a speedy recovery,

My balance wasn't too bad but my eye sight was horrible at that stage. Still isn't as good as it was but it's getting better all the time. You will be so happy to be home. Hello All,

Thanks, all the well wishes have meant a lot. Things went very well with the surgery. I'm home today well ahead of the curve on recovery. Feeling very, very, good. I did have a bit of double vision but its already gone. Wonky head but not bad...definitely something I'll be able to work out. My tinnitus has reduced to a single light tone, almost unnoticeable compared to previously and it didn't really bother me before. Headaches managed well so far and I'm hoping they dissapear with healing. No water for 6 weeks but I'll be training a lot inside. I'm going to have a hard time following those orders but the Boss will shoot me if I don't. No sense pushing it I guess. I'm sure of my ability to paddle across the bay.

Jb...I got your vid today....awesome. Sue and I watched it together....too funny and Thank you very much for sharing.

We'll definitely be at the brunch Phyl.

Thanks again to all of you for help and in particular for holding Sue's hand through all this. Still a ways to go to get our lives back to normal but the big step is taken.

Time for a nap.

Hi Bob,

Congratulations on putting the surgery behind you.    Happy Father's Day, and let the girls and your wife spoil you rotten for awhile!   You deserve it.    I'm sure your recovery will continue to be quick like mine has been.   You have already been compensating for a long time, and the imbalance that you have now will come back quickly in the next several weeks and coming months.   Just take it easy, and stay patient.     The best is yet to come.     I am sure you are relieved now!

Best regards,

Mostly on the couch but some walking around too. Going to take a slow walk on the treadmill tomorrow while I do balance PT. We'll see how far I get. Going to be careful but I am planning on pushing it at least a bit.

Bob,

congratulations on the excellent outcome.

Did the surgeons commented at all on whether the surgery was "more difficult" given that the AN was previously radiated? Did they say anything about "stickiness" etc? It sure seems that they didn't have any problems removing it, given how well you are doing, but I was just wondering.

My best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Phew...long day today...tired. Makes a differnce in my face. More week tonight. Still closing eye OK though. A little blurry vision.. I've been up since 6 this morning. Mostly on the couch but some walking around too. Going to take a slow walk on the treadmill tomorrow while I do balance PT. We'll see how far I get. Going to be careful but I am planning on pushing it at least a bit.

Molly...yes Sue did say you stopped by...thanks so much!

OK...time for bed. Thanks again everyone... ;D
Hi Bob and Sue (aka The Boss),
So happy for you and your family that your surgery went so well.  I have to agree with the others, Brad Pitt has nothing on you, Bob.  Not many people can look ruggedly handsome after brain surgery!

It appears that your biggest problem will be NOT PUSHING IT.  I think "The Boss" is going to have her hands full.

Again, I am so happy for you and all your family.

Take care,
Theresa (tsl)

Bob,
Don't you get some kind of double postie status?  Is there such a rank, and how many of you are there?  Perhaps you learned something in that area pre-op or could ask the docs at your follow-ups.
I notice my facial weakness increases when I'm tired, so no worries in that department, okay?  Looks like a string of nice weather headed our way for a change, so that will be a big mental challenge.  How about a nice balance-challenging walk on the beach?
It seems like yesterday you were profoundly concerned about regrowth, and presto, it's gone!  Imagine that . . .

Tell him he's now an 'official postie-toastie' (has undergone both surgery and radiation).  :)
Jim

I like this "postie-toastie" status! ;D

I'm glad your feeling good Bob, but... IMO... this first week... you shouldn't be pushing, even if it's just a little.  :-*

Hi everyone,  I hope you were all getting Bob's updates.  Nicole was sending them. she is a much better writer than myself so she was in charge...  I have a question.. Has anyone expereinced severe headaches when coming off of steroids?  Bob is now down to 1 steroid and he feels awful today.. headaches, he says he feels like his face is drooping more, etc. I have been giving him the oxycodone for the pain but he seems to be really suffering.  Any replies are greatly appreciated.  Sue
Title: Re: Stoneaxe's Update
Post by: moe on June 22, 2009, 01:24:15 pm
Glad to see Bob is home now, I'm late!
The headaches could be due to the steroids or just more likely brain surgery. Don't be shy on the oxycodone. If he needs it, he needs it. I had headaches for 6 weeks, (which did go away.). Tylenol is good too, if it is not mixed with the oxycodone.
And cold press on the head. All those little extra special touches help.

Recovery is so different for everyone. I read something about the treadmill on a recent post????? Maybe should hold off on that.
How about nice quiet walks around the neighborhood?!

So make sure he doesn't overdo it, Boss!
Rest, walk, sleep, eat, rest, walk, sleep, eat, should be the order of the day for at least a week post op :) ;)

So glad to hear all is well. He just needs reminding that he just had brain surgery.
I knew he would rock it. :)

Thanks everybody...yeah...I think I might have been a bit optimistic about the treadmill... ::). The boss has clamped down a bit on me too. I thought I was cruising on Saturday...must have been the feeling of coming home. I feel like I ran into a wall today.

I like the "postie-toastie" status..... ;D

Marianna....I didn't ask that question directly but will do so next week when I see Dr McKenna. The fact that it went "smoothly" and was quicker than anticipated would make me believe it wasn't that sticky but I'll find out.

Bob,
As you may painfully recall, I was very high on the steroids post-op.  I had a prolonged regimen due to delayed facial weakness.  Your quicker tapering schedule may be allowing the masked symptoms to rear their ugly heads.  I became tired and without energy or motivation.  You may simply have to treat each symptom as necessary until it resolves.
Wishing you free of pain,
Nancy

Hi Bob,

Sorry to hear your having headaches. I had only one day of steroids left to take when I got home, but I had severe headaches (especially during REM sleep) for the first three weeks every night. :(  I felt like my head was going to explode! I found a Percocet and a Valium took care of the pain within half an hour or so. To this day I still get the severe headaches at night, but thankfully they are getting further and further apart. The ones I get during the day are controlled with Tylenol or Ibuprofen.
I hope your headaches don’t take that long to go away.

Actually if it went smoothly and was quicker than anticipated, it doesn't really matter if it was sticky. :)  The real question is whether it made a difference in the outcome, which it appears it did not.

Sorry to hear about the headaches, though. I wonder if you came off the steroids too quickly? I had steroids before I was diagnosed, and they were certainly weird, anyway. I would be happy to attribute all sorts of powers to them, including the transformation of Nancy into the Energizer Bunny.

I think you are still in the "things can change day to day" stage, so it may not take long to get past this and on to the next thing. I hope so.

Hey Bob,

Hope the headaches bugger off soon - I didn't have any and wasn't on any steroids when I first left hospital so can't really help.  I can tell you I had a lot of rest when I got back from hospital - I was having a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon every day for about a week after coming out then after that maybe an hour or so for a week.  Occasionally I still have a little nap.  Hope you're feeling a better soon,

take it easy

Hi Bob:  I had a whopping migraine the day after returning home:  vomiting & severe pain - I would have called 911 but my friend who is a neurologist stayed with me.   The headaches continued for weeks afterward,  but never as severe as the 1st one.  I remember taking Tylenol extra strength around the clock (I kept a diary of the date/time taken - when I looked back, I realized I was writing April instead of June !).
I certainly hope you have medication that will squash the headaches.
Continued healing,  always good thoughts,  Nancy

Bob,

Sorry to hear you are having such terrible headaches.  I had them to for a little more than a week after surgery.  I guess I was one of the lucky ones.  If I was given steroids after surgery, it was intravenously and that my IV was removed two days after my surgery.  They did ask tons of questions that would probably have told them if I had intercranial pressure but I guess I was lucky there too.  I hope your headaches stop soon too.

It's okay to push yourself a little bit, but resting and taking naps are definitely a necessary part of the healing process too.  Listen to your body and you'll do great.

Sending more healing vibes your way,
Wendy

Bob, so glad to hear that you had a successful surgery and that your recovery is coming along nicely.  For me I was so pumped up on adrenaline on being well and ready to go home so I felt great but also hit a wall.  As you start to relax into your recovery your body will start making the compensations.  Give yourself time to heal in these six weeks so you can get back on that board as soon as possible!  Sleep, eat ice cream, let people wait on you, you know, REST!  Congrats on being a Postie!

Thanks All....the headache was bad enough to have Sue and I drive into Boston to see Dr. McKenna this morning. Back on the steroids, some ibuprofen and an occasional percocet. I'm headache free tonight. I'm thinking its the steroids. I have quite a bit of additional facial swelling and could feel the increase in pressure. Within a couple hours of talking the 1st steroid dose I was headache free. Feeling good at the moment. My walking is good when my head isn't pounding...up and down stairs ....slowly. Just wonky head a bit. Still some occasional double vision.

LOL...was going to post a scar picture but the camera broke taking the picture.....I'm not kidding....very funny.... ;D. I'll dig out my other one tomorrow and post.....wide angle lens.... ::)

Thanks again...Bob

Hi Bob,  So glad to hear that they found a way to relieve your headaches.  I don't recall having headaches after my surgery but that was 17 years ago so perhaps time has done me a favor by forgetting some of the things related to the surgery.  June is my anniversary month for the surgery and I find myself thinking back to what happened and how far I've come from then.  I know it's going to be hard for you to take it easy so your body can heal but if you don't rest enough your body will take longer to recover.  Be a patient patient!  Jill :)

Hi, Bob.
Glad you were pro-active and got the relief necessary.  It's interesting that when they saw me, looking very much like you post-op, they extended my steroids, but with you they didn't.  There is no dictated protocol, I guess.  I had no headaches after the first day and a half or so, and those I attribute to being kept awake all night and day by noises of machines, nurses, and other patients.  One disoriented lady was screaming all night.  Coulda done without that!
I had a very long course of steroids with a slow taper.  Although I was the Energizer Bunny, it worked for me!  I was running circles around Dave, my supposed caregiver, waiting on him, cooking and cleaning.

. Back on the steroids, some ibuprofen and an occasional percocet. I'm headache free tonight. I'm thinking its the steroids.

Ew the Percocet...I remember the constipation that goes with that drug. Be sure to eat lots of fiber and take collace.

If the double vision continues you should be adamant about this with your physician. Sometimes this is caused by hydrocephalus (excess dura fluid putting pressure on the optic nerves) ... for me the most affective drug for the double vision was diamox (mega diuretic)

Here is a link that explains that drug (generic name Acetazolamide) and its purpose
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetazolamide

... it will also take care for the constipation issues caused by the Percocet. (You are part of the AN family now- and yes we talk about BM’s as these are issues, post treatment, that many of us had… and constipation will only magnify the headaches.

Hang in there- it does get better. It is just imperative that you bring up ALL issues with the physician who is caring for you.

THAT is a great idea Nancy!

And we get to talk potty humor too? OK BOB drink lots of water, water, water, if you are having constipation and colace 2 times a day if needed. (Prunes are good too). A small amount of MOM even (that's milk of magnesia, not mother).....

I was on vicodin, and then percocet for my headaches. Couldn't get a handle on them (I am now headache free BTW).
I won't share my  near death by bowel movement experience , but it wasn't pleasant :D
OK have a nice quiet day and enjoy your beautiful garden, weather permitting.

I also found that walking helped the headaches. I had them for about two weeks but the more I walked the better I felt. At 6 months post-op I've decided the cure for almost all my problems, and this is just my own thing, is EXERCISE. It has helped my balance, headaches, wonkie head, and constipation, haha. You need to sleep, rest and let your body recover but once you feel well enough I think it's important to move, even when you don't really want to. Of course, with Bob, Im preaching to the choir.

LOL...Sue and I were laughing about what have become common topics of conversation as we get older just last night.... Constipation and BM's (or the lack thereof) being one of the current topics... ;D. I haven't had it too bad...stayed on top of it from the beginning and cutting back on the percocets has helped. Headache just minor today, face swollen though and weakness continues. Things are very good though. We're going out for a walk tonight for an ice cream on the waterfront in Plymouth....good to get out... ;D.

Choir for sure...no question. Being in shape has helped tremendously.

Looking good Bob - this'll sound weird but I think you're lucky to have short hair - Now that mine is growing back you can't tell I've had brain surgery which is a bit of a sadness! I am proud of my scar!  If I tell someone I had brain surgery in March I want them to see my scar and say "Oh wow!", not look at me and say "Really?"!!!  I need a t-shirt that says "I went and had brain surgery and all I got was this lousy scar on my tummy".

That might be an idea Steve!  Perhaps I just need to keep my head shaved and everyone will see it!  I saw this story today on the BBC News site and I thought wow, she's got my post op haircut!  I even had hair resembling dreds after all that time not washing it!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8116876.stm

Mmm... Nancy - I can honestly say I have NEVER owned a midriff baring top and I'm pretty sure I never will!  Especially now I'm post op - not only do I have this particularly unforgiving scar on my guts, I also have a significant muffin top going on due to my foolish post-op eating frenzy!

I think Bob should tell people a shark tried to take a chunk out of his head when he was out and about on the water.  Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!!!

I feel better now.  My tummy scar is unsightly.  My eating was pre-op as I thought, Why would I diet through the holidays and on my tropical vacation if perhaps I didn't survive brain surgery?  That would be a real waste of a good time.  I'm paying for it now.
I love the shark idea!  Up here it would be a snapping turtle.

LOL...my brother started a thread on the standup forum we frequent asking what I should do with the scar. Lots of interesting tattoo ideas, waves, fish, Cape Cod Bay Challenge logo. I was kind of wishing they had put in a waterproof cellphone/mp3 zip pocket.... ;D

Update 1 week + 2
Reducing steroids daily, percocet and Motrin as needed for pain.
Walking confidentally, gardens, stairs, sidewalks. No long walks yet (just one of 1/2 mile) but if we ever get enough sun... ;D
Only a slight stabbing pain in the ear occasionally. Headaches seem to be under control
Sleeping well. Eating like a horse....nobody mentioned the desire to clean refidgerators of food. Need to stop that!
Slight workout along with balance PT today. Very light weights, shoulder and bcep/tricep exercises while walking in place and doing balance PT.
Face is still very weak. Can close my left eye but only if I close the right as well. No smile on left. I can feel some improvement today though. Yesterday seemed like a low spot for face. Tough reading and using computer.

Time for bed!

Mowed the lawn today..5,000 sq/ft or so with a push mower. Felt great to be productive. Then I had a nice long nap in my hammock... ;). Going to get started on a couple of woodworking projects this week. Some new paddles and a surfboard (a first) for a friend.

Stitches out, facial weakness continues. Dr McKenna still assures me it should return completely. Got some ointment for my eye. Balance continues slow improvements. Interesting this time the balance is continuous/consistant. It used to vary a lot. I think getting rid of the nerve is going to be a good improvement.

Bob ~

Kudos on your excellent recovery and positive attitude.  I strongly believe that being motivated to get back to doing the things you love can be an immense help in recovery, assuming the physical ability is there.  I couldn't paddleboard to save my life and have no interest in trying (sorry) but I did other things post-op that challenged me and, I believe, helped me recover faster than I may have, otherwise.  I can't prove that but I believe it, based on mine and other AN post-op patient's accounts of running half-marathons, biking, etc. weeks after surgery.

I know I join many others rooting for you to 'hit the water' in a few more weeks as well as recover your full facial mobility.  I know you'll do it, too.  :)

Things are looking good, and as Jim says, the progress you make will depend on yourself and the motivation that you have to get back on the water.    Be sure not to overdue it of course, and listen to your body when it calls for nap time.    The naps though will get shorter and shorter.    I saw a big difference in strength and endurance on weeks four through six.    Hopefully, you will follow the same track; as they say, your mileage may vary.      Now I'd better get back on that training schedule soon or you'll be overtaking me in the recovery department!     Glad to  hear you're doing well!

Best regards,
Steve

Hi Bob,
I've been away from my computer for a few days and have just caught up on your progress.  Picture makes you look like a rugged Bruce Willis!

It's good to hear that you've come thru the rough patch.  I know that THE BOSS is taking good care of you.  Recovering from this type of surgery is hard.  I'm glad that Dr. McKenna says that your face will return to its pre-surgery look.  He has done so many of these surgeries he knows.
Take care,
Theresa (tsl)

Latest update: Things are proceeding very smoothly. I think my balance is better than before surgery already. PT says I'm doing so well she's changing it to one day/week. No headaches...off all drugs except occasional ibuprofen for swelling. Double vision almost completely gone. Things still do get a bit fuzzy as I get tired. I think I'm ready to get back into the world. I can drive without problem most of the time. My face is still unmoving but I've seen improvement in my eye for sure. Face looks a little less droopy according to Sue.

I have to say I'm very pleasantly surprised by how good I feel. Life is Good!

Hey Bob,
Glad you are feeling well.  Can't believe you mowed the lawn a few days ago!!  Still woozy here in Merrimack, NH following surgery.  I've had similar eye issues as well, though they seem to be dissipating slowly but surely.  Face is still pretty lopsided. All things considered, I'm happy with my progress as you seem to be with yours.

Hope all is well.

Thanks all....snuck back on the water today. Just a easy 1 mile paddle on flat water with Sue and the family. Big family get together at my sisters house in Falmouth. Brought 4 boards since everyone wanted to go out. Sue wasn't too happy with me but I coated a cotton ball with A&D ointment and stuck it in my ear..put a big waterproof bandage over my ear. Never fell in so it didn't get tested...came close a couple times. Only problem I had was when we turned around back into the wind...I had to paddle with my eyes closed often so that I could close my left eye...talk about a vestibular challenge. If the doc says I'm good to go on Monday I may need to wear a patch while paddling....I'll be the 1st standup pirate.... ;)

24 days, surgery to paddleboard. Not that anyone is counting. :)

I think going a mile without falling off is an impressive first outing. I'm pretty sure I would not be able to do that. You still have a solid month to gear up for the big event in August. I'm betting you make it.

Congratulations on your recovery, Bob. You are back now.  ;)

Hehe...we thinks alike...we're headed out shopping shortly and goggles are on the list. Eye is bugging me today so I need to be careful. Once I got over the 1st little wobbles my balance was great. I tested it a bit with some quick turns and short sprints and felt really good.

Got the official go ahead to get back on the water from Dr. McKenna today....yeehaa! Have to protect the eye and use the cotton ball in my ear for another week. I'm going to try and paddle almost everyday between now and August 8th and I'm going to enter a 1 mile race on August 2nd. I'm feeling great...I drove in to Boston today! Of course I learned to drive there so that isn't as big a feat as it might sound to some... ;D. Now if only the eye/face would recover things would be great. Actually...I'll just settle for being able to tightly close my eye. I'd prefer not to have to wear protection when I get back to surfing.

We brought in two huge apple cakes in to MGH and one to MEEI today to say thanks for the great care. I'm so thankfull for the great skills of my doctors and the extraordinary care I've received from the nurses and staff at both hospitals.

4 miles today with a couple of friends. Felt great if a bit off. Only real issue was my eye. I thought the sunglasses I bought with the gasket would be enough to keep the wind off...not. Got dry and irritated. I forgot to bring the  clear eye patch Dr McKenna gave me. Should solve the problem...we'll see tomorrow.

12 miles today with a few friends training for the CCBC. Eye patch works good. Makes things blurry when it fogs up but I manage. No falling anyway... ;D.  I was very tired the last couple of miles. With only 3 weeks of training left before the event I have my work cut out for me.

Everythings been going so smoothly that i guess I'm spoiled. Just waiting for my facial nerve to join with the program so the eye problems will stop...hopefully.

I did have a bit of a scare this morning....potential CSF leak in my ear. Had some fluid come out. Called the doc and the nurse had me tilt my head to the side and strain...no more fluid though. Doc says it may just be some of the fat put in after the surgery has liquified. It was only a few drops with a little blood mixed in. Not leaking anymore. Doc said if it comes back and is worse to call. Fingers crossed. Was surprised after 5 weeks to have something happen.

Bob,
Dr McK asked me to swab gently with alcohol after each shower.  I usually get a bit of yellow coloration on the swab when it is withdrawn.  I wonder if that is fat.   :o   ???

LOL...yeah me too JB...me too. I must admit though I'm feeling pretty good about the shape I'm in despite the weight gain of steroid induced indulgence....never thought I was going to stop eating! i've already burned off most of it with my training. Hope to be at 250 lbs for the event.

Nancy...I've been diligent with the alcohol at least once a day and always after showers. I was getting the yellow discoloration too but I thought the damn thing was pretty much all healed. Also seems to be a bit soft/spongy within the confines of the big incision. If I touch it I can feel the pressure transfer to the inner ear plug...feels weird. Going to keep close watch on it. Hate to have something happen now that would require more work and keep me off the water for the CCBC.

Disturbing development after yesterdays surf session. Last night I noticed that I was leaking from my incision. More than I had leaked from the ear. Wiped it off with alcohol and it seemed to stop. Then last night some coyotes howling in the backyard woke me up. Noticed my pillow was wet (I was sleeping on the AN side). Turned the light on to find a significant damp spot and what looked like some puss on the pillow...gross. Cleaned the incision with alcohol...quite a bit of junk there. This morning everything seems OK but I did notice that the swelling on the side of my head was gone and its no longer spongy. Whatever leaked out must have been causing the swelling. Gotta go call the doc. Was hoping to hit the waves again today but I'll see what he says.

I'm one bummed out ANer. I haven't been on all week because I was admitted to Mass Eye and Ear last Saturday with and infection and just got home today. The leak ended up making me go in and see the doc. Expected to get a scrip for antibiotics and go home. Ended up being admited right away. Spent the weekend and early part of the week trying to treat it with intravenous doses of heavy hitter antibiotics. Finally after much consideration by all I went back under the knife to clean it out on Thursday. Dr McKenna had given great consideration to my wanting to paddle on the 15th but in the end the only solution was to clean it out. I'm back at square one....no paddling for at leat a few weeks. They had to remove a portion of the fat graft and replace it wuth more. Hardest part is that I still feel great...no balance issue...no headaches. Thought the only thing I had to worry about was the facial weakness and even that seemed to be getting slightly better. Looks like I'll be sitting on the boat drinking beer.... :(

My time on the water had nothing to do with the infection. The fat graft didn't take near the surface (possibly due to the previous radiation scar tissue) and was dying. We (docs and I) had noticed the swelling 2 weeks after surgery...before I ever went into the water. Surfing may have opened up the incision and made a closer look necessary so if anything that may have helped keep it from becoming a bigger problem by allowing it to drain and forcing the issue.
Title: Re: Stoneaxe's Update
Post by: NancyMc on August 01, 2009, 02:33:27 pm
Well, then, I'm bummed out, too.  I'm so glad you went in to see McKenna, though.  And I'm glad it's so hard for you to still feel great!  ::)  Most of all, I'm glad the consolation prize is sitting on the boat drinking beer.  There are much worse things, much, much worse.
So, at least you got a frenzy of paddling in there for a while and know you'll be back soon.  This time stay out of the water for six weeks, okay?
Title: Re: Stoneaxe's Update
Post by: stoneaxe on August 01, 2009, 02:41:01 pm
I know sitting on the boat drinking beer doesn't seem bad but it will actually be a serious form of torture for me.... ::)

What an amazing person Dr. McKenna is...he had given me his personal cell # to call in case of problems. When I called Saturday evening he was actually on vacation in Florida with his son at a baseball tournament. He called MEEI and Dr. Macaul (sp?) to arrange for my arrival Saturday night. Great to have someone with his skill and compassion on your side.

Even though the paddling surfing had nothing to do with it I am not going to force it. I hope the fall surfing is great this year.

That truly is a bummer, but so glad you sought treatment before it got any more out of hand.  At the risk of sounding like your mother, this time listen to your body and ease off on pushing quite so aggressively with your recovery program.

I'm sure you will be the #1 cheerleader for the event even though you will not be paddling this time ...... enjoy the boat and the beer!

I'm sorry to learn of this unwanted development that puts a dent in your paddle boarding plans but I share the opinion of others that have posted before me that taking care of it in hospital was a sensible idea.  Your Dr.McKenna seems to be the kind of doctor we all want (my neurosurgeon is just like him - concerned and compassionate).  Recover and enjoy the day as best you can.  Life goes on and you know you'll be back on the water in no time!  :)

I'm one bummed out ANer.

I think of you more as a bummed out paddle-boarder.  :(

These post surgical infections are strangely random, just sort of picking people from the supply of AN patients without rhyme or reason. Rats. You will make a good coach for the other paddlers in the big event, and I know we will be seeing some of those ice paddling pictures later this year. Given our 100+ degree week here in the Northwest, those sound pretty good right now.

Take it easy and enjoy a month of being a spectator. You'll be back at it soon.

Hey Stonaxe,

I am so sorry to hear of your complication, but very very glad it was taken care of aggressively and in the hospital.  I'm sure the treatment circumvented any, more serious issues.  However, I'm also disappointed for you that you can't paddle.  I know how much you were looking forward to it.

As for facial issues, Dr. Martuza sent me to Dr. Hadlock at MEEI.  She has specialized PTs who work on the facial stuff.  I've regained most if not all my movement since seeing her and doing the prescribed exercises.  It might be worth a request....

Hugs,

Molly

Bob (Bob Bob Bob BOB  :-\ ),

This is really just a short window of time… you need to slow down and rest… eventually you will get back behind the paddles… but right now you need to “whoa there boy!” “Short term pain for long term gain!”

I am sorry you had to have a re-entry surgery … but you needed to nip this in the “bud”. (BTW speaking of “bud” I do not think it is a good idea for you to sit on the dock and drink beer… nag-nag… mother-mother …nag-nag  ;)  ;D )

Know that 2 summers ago I was also leaking CSF… that went on for 2 + months. This last 2 weeks I was up at Crater Lake (won’t deny though I had total wonky head at 6,000 + ft elevation which I never suffered from before surgery …so my rock climbing days in the Canadian Rockies, of my youth, I will have to put behind me and now I am thinking river rafting might be cooler http://www.wildrogue.com/  …However I will only do it if they let me wear a helmet on the raft)….also I was kayaking in Honeyman State Park Lakes … and now taking early morning Polar Bear dips …

This was not ACL knee surgery- this was “brain” surgery. It WILL take longer to recover- and more so if you push yourself too hard. If you do not get to surf this fall on the east coast- know that there is always the west coast… and you will eventually get back to it, as you are so motivated to do so. In the meantime try to be more motivated to just slow down and heal- you adrenalin sports nut you! (Tease HUG  :-* )

Enjoy the surf from the beach and avoid the beer for a while… you are dealing with all sorts of fluid issues- Do NOT add alcohol at this time. You WILL get back onto the board- then you can bring out the champagne. In the meantime- no to alcoholic bevies and find other stuff to keep you happy… there are other adrenalin rushes you can get in dryer land sports…

DHM :)

Awww Bob,

Sorry to hear about this, that super sucks.  I totally understand why you're so bummed.  So great that you've got the infection sorted though - the one place I would imagine you don't want an infection is in or around your brain oui?  I've found a guy nearby who has a board I can try out tomorrow in Cambridge so I will go out paddling tomorrow night after work and think of you.  You know at times like this you just need to get out of the funk and get back to the "it could always be worse" mindset - then you'll be right.  You can race again next year - and you'll be back paddling in no time and that's the main thing!

Bob,

How about when you are up to it ...you come to Portland and teach our Oregon ANA support group how to surf… it would be great vestibular therapy.

I would truly love to lean how to do this- and hey this outfitter (in today's  Oregon news video) provides helmets to cover the ole craniotomy  hole.

Hi Bob,

I just wanted to add my regrets to hear about your set back.   However, you are lucky to have such a caring and compassionate surgeon as Dr. McKenna; he really is a great guy.    I guess sometimes our bodies just decide to take over and make us stop whether we like it or not.    The good news is that Dr. McKenna gave you the straight story on why you had the infection and that it was unrelated to the paddling.    I have also wanted to get back to my favorite sport -  road biking -- but the balance is still a little off, although improving.    So I'll join you in that beer this month, and we can just enjoy what's left of our New England summer as we progress down the road to final recovery.   Think of how good you'll feel by this time next year!   I'm sure there is plenty of paddling & biking in our futures.

Best regards,
Steve

Just to echo the others and say that I am so sorry things have worked out this way - I was so rooting for you to get out there and kick some AN booty!!  I can honestly say (from MANY years of experience with this thing) that things don't always turn out like you want them to - no matter HOW BAD you want it & are willing to work for it - but if you will look back (when YOU are ready) and really SEARCH, you will find a reason there somewhere.  I know you will be the BEST supporter there for all your friends!

In the grand scheme of things this is just a small bump...a very frustrating bump but a bump none the less. There is some silver lining. I'm getting all the loose ends tied up for the event. Well, Bob, I am VERY late in reading this! So sorry to hear about the infection!

But, I guess now that you've had your shower and shampoo, you'll be back out on the water soon.  As everyone else has said ... just be careful and try to keep that incision dry and comfy!

Been awhile since I posted, been lurking a bit. Very busy tying up the loose ends of the CCBC and doc McKenna gave me the go ahead to get back on the water so I've been making up for a lost summer. My new get well present keeping me busy.

All I got were some crummy flowers as a get well present!  Actually they were very beautiful and I loved them and appreciated them... even though they weren't a board!

Uh, JB, I saw your flowers, and they weren't exactly crummy!  You should have seen mine.  And you got jelly beans, too!  Well, I got a basket of goodies that are still lingering around by waistline.

Happy paddling!

Thanks for the kind words all. This board is going to add so much to how I can have fun on the water. I'm waiting for some high winds to go out for a long downwinder. When the wind is 30-40 mph at your back and there are 3 ft ocean swells you can just fly!

Donnalynn...I hope that's the exchange rate!... :o. A brand new board here costs on avg...$1300 or so. A board like my ocean racer would be about $2500. Boards are expensive but when compared to some other things...not so bad. Skiing will cost you more in the long run and this is better for you than a gym membership.

Together is definitely the more important thing. Hope you and Jim are finally enjoying yourselves. I'm glad Sue likes to paddleboard.... ;D

Sorry I haven't been on much lately folks. Very busy trying to get things back to normal. Speaking of normal...here's an update. My balance is so close to normal I can't tell the difference...only some slight wobble when I go from light to dark....NO headaches...haven't had a single one for over a month....soooo psyched! Facial issues are slowly getting better...eye is tearing (too much actually...sometimes drips... :'() Still problems with my mouth, nose, and face but improved for sure. Very, very happy with how things have gone since surgery. Dr. McKenna rocks!

Bob,

If your ears were ringing today - it is because people were talking about you.  ;) ... Specifically the PDX ANA support group- which had people from both Washington & Oregon State present.  Know that you are an inspirational recovery story worth sharing!

Hehe...that picture is pre-op and its also photoshopped. It's a combination of a drawing I did of Hokusai's "Great Wave of Kanagawa" and a picture of me. That said, I am surfing again, was out last Friday and had a blast....haven't had a chance to get on any really big waves yet but that's only because there hasn't been any since the docs said I could get back on the water. I did a 10 mile paddle yesterday in heavy winds and felt great. Life is good.... ;D

Actually you changed the picture!  Although I love this one, the one I was asking about was you with water crashing down all around you - looked like you were inside a huge wave.

I couldn't have stood up to that wave, I'd have dove under it ! !
I've been afraid to brave the ocean - maybe I'll give it a try !   I loved body surfing.
Now it's swimming in the condo pool, but exercise is exercise !

Always good thoughts,  Nancy

You'll notice the horizon is in the bottom right corner. I have a Go Pro camera attached to my paddle. It shoots a picture every 2 secs. You're bound to get some that are pretty interesting. I remember that fall well. I was flying along and caught the edge at the top of the wave....did a half sumersault into the water.....notice the nice hole my head is making.... ;D

5 months post-surgery. Went to see Dr McKenna today. He's very pleased with the progress of my face. Getting better all the time. He did suggest I make an appointment with facial therapy to help mitigate potential for synkenisis that is showing up (tears instead of saliva when eating) no muscle synkenisis yet but then I don't have much movement yet, just return of tone.
Other than the minor facial issues everything is great. Also went paddlesurfing today in wild wind and waves (6'+ waves with 2-3' chop mixed in and 15-20 mph winds) and had a blast. Quite a few falls but even folks with full function would have had a hard time of it today.

Bob, that photo is unbelievable!  You should enter it in a photo contest.  I wanted to add that I read your other 15 page post on paddleboarding under Balance the other day and was blown away by it.  I watched the videos....I showed my children...truly inspiring.  I actually went and found a place that gives lessons near Cape May, NJ where we vacation and am planning on trying it next summer.  I also live right next to to two rivers - one being the Hudson River which I don't think I will try but the other is small and we all swim in it and I think I can do this there!  So I am yet another ANer truly inspired by you and your balance post surgery! Keep posting those photos for us to enjoy.

Hi Bob,

Glad to hear that you are making some progress and that McKenna is following up with you.     I'm sure it has its frustrating moments, but you seem to be thriving despite the issues.     Hopefully he gave you more info on what will come over the winter months as the nerves continue to heal.    Nerves are funny things as they reconnect and heal.    Weird pains that come and go, and sensations that were never there before.    Oh well, at least we are all here to compare notes!!     That is a great pic by the way.   I spent a week of my honeymoon at Kanaha about 15 years ago with my understanding wife.    The only reason she let me windsurf every day that week was because I had arranged for her to take lessons from a local guy who had the body of Greek god, shoulder length hair, and the face of Fabio!    She never minded me getting on the board as she trotted off to her "windsurfing lesson" !!!!    ;D ;D ;D

Keep it going!

Steve

Phyl...can't wait for Sunday...already have the Pats game set to record... ;D

Cheryl ...thanks...and happy to hear you'll be trying it out. You can paddle anywhere there is water...even the Hudson. Seapaddle NYC is a huge event...paddle around Manhattan for autism awareness. I couldn't do it this year but very likely next year.

Seal...small world...sounds like Giampalo Cammarota...if it was a very funny italian guy that's him. My brother knows him well and I've met him a couple of times. It was one of his online videos that first got me interested in SUP.

Now that I think of it...not sure GC has been on Maui that long....but he does give windsurf lessons there.....and looks something like Fabio if you squint... ;)

what are you doing indoors and online on a day like today  :o  :o ... where its absolutely gorgeous out and you should be catching some waves? :)

See ya Sunday... and FYI.... this weekend, UK change their clocks for the season, hence, on Sunday, will be a 6 hr time difference to the "good" coast!  Make sure the VCR/DVR is recording accordingly! :)

Been a long time since my last update. Lots happening. I'm pretty much back to normal. My face is back to its normal ugly mug. If anything there is a slight tightening on the AN side. Not absolutely symmetrical but close enough that its hardly noticeable. Some synkineses...when I eat my left eye tears and my nose starts to run...have to eat with an extra napkin. No headaches still...couple of normal ones is about it in the last few months. Very rare to have any wonky head. If it happens at all its usually accompamying a head cold. I do notice that my surfing has suffered a bit. I think that's because my balance was better pre-surgery except that i would occasionally lose it completely. That doesn't happen anymore but its not as good as it was before when it was good....if that makes sense... ;D
Back to work...very happy about that...being productive is important. I have a ton of things to catch up on. Finally starting to get back in shape...joined a gym, working out at least 3-4 times/week, surfed for 5 hours today in rough conditions and big waves....sore tonight but its a good sore.
Hard at work planning CCBC #3...going to be BIG this year...we're hoping to raise $100,000...setting our sights high. Can't wait to paddle this year. Going to be as meaningful to me as the 1st year to step ashore.

I just read through all the responses in this post. What a wonderful caring community. I couldn't have done this without all the wondeful support. My best wishes to all of you...hope you all realize your dreams.

So glad you're gearing up and planning for CCBC #3. I felt so bad for you when you couldn't do it last year. I wanted to say some 'mom' thing like... well there will be next year. And now it's happening! YAY!
