Title: BAHA appearance
Post by: hannie on May 21, 2009, 07:32:52 am
I had my an surgery three months ago and at my recent consultation my surgeon suggested the BAHA. I feel i'm adjusting to SSD quite well (i had fab hearing pre-op and now have none in left ear). I'm due to thave a trial in the next few weeks to see how it helps me. My question is quite a lame one really - how does the BAHA look? I have short hair and worry that it show a lot and prevent me styling my hair properly. I know that this is a minor concern but i'd appreciate input. Also do you take the BAHA out at night etc?

Cheers

I understand Hannie I have short hair to I dah my surgery in april so I will get the baha in july.Yes you take it off at night like you would a hearing aid snaps on and off.It blends in really good to your hair to you pick the color for your hair color. I looked at it this way if it is going to make me hear I do not care what it looked like well to an extreem lol. But look at all the people out there with big blue tooths sticking out of their ears.I think that is ugly the baha is way smaller then that I hope this helps. When you put the demo on you will see what I mean it works so well you will not want to give it back.  ;D

Hannie -

not a lame question at all.  You'd be surprised if you knew some of the questions I asked prior to getting my BAHA  ;)

Until about six months ago I wore my hair very short and the BAHA showing wasn't a problem at all.

Here is a link to some pictures of my BAHA site and processor http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=6634.0

As Mike said, the processors come in colors so they can blend in with your hair.  Styling your hair isn't an issue - you can blow dry it, curl it, etc.  The abutment ("screw") is very close to your skull, so even combing your hair isn't strange at all.  Sometimes I hear a little click when my comb hits the titanium, but that's about it.

The processor (tiny hearing aid) detaches from the abutment (which obviously stays implanted into your skull) - and yes, you typically would remove it when you sleep.  At a cost of approximately $4,000 you really don't want to damage your processor.

If you have any other questions - even if you think they may be lame - please don't hesitate to ask  ;D
