Title: Tattoo
Post by: mimoore on March 07, 2009, 08:52:32 pm
This is a tattoo that my daughter got when I was diagnosed. No one has a tattoo in our family so it was a bit of a shock.  :o :o :o It did make me feel special!

I have made a consultation (yikes) to discuss my survivor tattoo....still can't believe that I am doing this. I'll let you know how it goes. I am thinking of an angel wing with the word believe in it, on my left (tumour side) shoulder blade. NOT as big as my daughter's tattoo.

Michelle,

What a sweet daughter you have!  And smart too - you can't yell at her for getting a tattoo when it's in your honor!!   ;)

Can't wait to hear how yours goes.

Oh Michelle,

If you get a survivor tatoo you've got to post it on here for us.  You may start a trend.  Your daughter's tatoo is great.

Wow!  That is no small tattoo  :o

I got inked myself with the date of my AN surgery http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=6704.0

I've given some thought recently to having my BAHA date added, but I kind of feel like if I have my implant date added I'd have to add the date I got to start wearing my processor also - and I'm not sure I'm ready for three dates on my arm.

I have been thinking since before surgery of getting the "Headache " picture my then 5 year old drew
of me when I had a headache (my avatar)...it was so prophetic of the AN since she drew it before AN was
discovered ... and also a purple butterfly for lupus ... both would have to be small ... but location and pain
bother me ...

if I got them I would want them to be seen but I am a cover-up girl ... and well I just don't like needles that
much .... maybe one on each upper arm...or side by side on one arm tangled in a web... I got diagnosis of both
the same week in October 2004...lupus on Monday ... AN on Thursday ...it was bad week for me

most of my Friends would be totally shocked and my mom would flip her lid ... it may be worth it just for that  ;D

I love the tattoo, it's not so big. What a honor! I was thinking I have been wanting a couple more tattoo's, if I have surgery I want my tattoo artist to tattoo me while i'm under! When I wake I could have some nice art to look at!!! That would be cool!!!

Michelle ~

As I stated to Jan when she got her tattoo last year, I'm basically ambivalent regarding tattoos (on men or women) and don't have one - but I do have to admit to admiring your daughter's tattoo (thanks for the photo).  It's quite attractive and the message is certainly touching as it relates to you in such a loving, positive way.

The decision is yours, of course, but based on the beautiful tattoo your daughter now has, I kind of hope you do take the plunge and get a 'survivor' tattoo for yourself, whatever the size.

Thanks Lori, Mklady, Cheri and Marci (I see you are a hero member - I just can't keep up...hehe). K I would NEVER get one that big, smaller is good for me. Jan I saw yours it is very nice... I guess if you wanted to add a tail to the 7 you still could. Soundy I love your idea... do it!!! Greg wasn't there a dr who applied a stuck on tattoo during some surgeries and got into trouble for putting it close to a woman's privates? Thanks Jim... yes it is quite an honour!
Hugs to you all.

my 11 year old says I need to let her draw a skull for me to put with the headache picture
the now 9 year old drew ... she said it would be cute not scary ... now what's the use
of getting a skull put on your body forever if it ain't scary?

Let me know when you get tattooed Michelle ... I have got to see one more AN inspired tattoo
before I take the plunge or stick or poke ...oh you know what I mean...also need time to find a place ...
have seen a couple in Huntsville that look down right scary and not places I want to go into...may
ask people I see around here that have them..

husband thinks I am crazy and said he wouldn't spot me the money... I hold in my possession the money
for his 42 inch TV that is suppose to go into the living room as soon as the ceiling is done ...  ;D ...
he may get a 32 inch screen instead ...also thought of stealing it to go toward BAHA  ;)
Title: Re: Tattoo
Post by: lori67 on March 10, 2009, 09:08:25 am
Soundy,

If your husband is like mine and he's doing your ceiling himself, you've got plenty of time to spend the money for the tv and save up enough to buy a new one.  Or a new house that already has a big tv in it.   :D

And i think it's a requirement for tattoo places to look scary.  I've never seen one that looked much like a day spa.  Although, there's another money making idea.... ;)

scary don't bother me too much but the place we passed the other day was a bad scary...

there is a place in Fayetteville in Lincoln county TN that has a sign out front Body Shop and Tattoos...
now that is a new kind of scary  ... guy buffing and sanding ...puts down sander and tattoos someone ...
maybe I could get him  to fill the hole in my head with bondo   ;D

I already have him taking off next week...I went and got the tongue and groove and the paint and nails ...
and bandaides...also two small hammers for us to use ... 1/4 wood and 1-1/4 inch nails and 22oz framing
hammers don't mix... I already stained trim pieces...that way we can just fit them ,nail them up then
touch up... and there is no taping off that way ...if he doesn't get it done in the two days he is taking
off I will get it done with help from my jobless son

I worked the book fair today at school...a Ripley's book there  has alot of really weird tattos... I told a friend
I was going to get one and her eyes popped out of her head ... then another parent working pulls her pant
leg up and shows us a peacock that has it's head on outside of her leg just under her knee and the body
wrapped around her leg with tail dragging and a few eye on the tail showing ... it was well done ...she said
it took 2 sessions to finish...if I get one it has to be done in one session or it would be like my sons half
finished Goko or Gohan (Yugio character or something ) that he had started but never finished ...

Went for my tattoo consultation today ... he (a nice, sweet guy by the way) was eager to do my 'surviour tattoo'.
YIKES it looks like I am going to do this. He will sketch my idea this week and next week I go to look at it and get it done.
I will post a picture of it... and no I am not getting it as big as my daughters.
Yeha we are the tattoo family. ::)

Congratulations on making definite plans to get your own tattoo!  Although tattoos were once considered somewhat déclassé, especially for ladies, times have changed and tattoos on women are relatively common, today, with no negative connotations.  In recent years, I've seen some beautiful, tasteful tattoos on women and now wonder why they were once frowned upon by 'polite society'.  Frankly, I'm still in awe of your daughter's beautiful tattoo.  I'm sure your tattoo will be attractive as well as meaningful to you.  Definitely post a photo once the tattoo is healed up and ready for it's 'debut'.   :)

What a nice way for your daughter to honor you. And getting one of your own to celebrate is pretty special too. I've been thinking about getting one for a couple of years now in honor of my wife and daughters and because its so much a part of the surf culture i've come to love. Both of my daughters have multiple tattoos and each has one that commemorates our family.

My oldest daughters most recent tattoo is unique.....she had me do it. It was a very strange thing to do but she surprised me when i went over to help her paint her living room and kitchen. She said she had a favor to ask and then threw that out at me. At first I said no way but she begged and said it would mean so much to her. I couldn't refuse. She had already made arrangements (knew she had Dad wrapped) to have a friend come over that is a budding tattoo artist and bring his gear. She asked me to come up with a design that would have some meaningful relationship to home. When she was born I planted a cherry tree in our backyard that is now the centerpiece of our asian inspired watergarden that her sister and I built together. So I sketched a picture of a cherry branch with a blossom and a couple of buds. I transfered the sketch to the trace paper and then to her leg. I was given a quick lesson on using the tattoo gun by her friend and away I went....very nervously. half the time you can't see what you're doing because the ink is running all over. When I finished the tattoo she had me sign it "Dad"

Yours truly hands shaking and all. Maybe I should tattoo some hair up there.... :)

It came out pretty good for a 1st tattoo if I do say so myself....it was still healing here and a little out of focus but you get the idea.

Never in my life did I ever think I would tattoo anyone nevermind one of my girls.....very strange...but she couldn't be happier with it.

BTW...not all tattoo parlors are scary. A friend of mine is a tattoo artist and his place is very clean, and decorated with great taste. He's a little scary though.... ;D

K I went with my idea... I asked him to give me a left angel wing (in shades of back and white) and the word Believe (in cursive writing) over the wing. I asked for the word Believe to be the colours of the rainbow and the end (not the tip) of the wing to fade in or end in kind of a mist.  My thought was that after a storm (my diagnosis) that a beautiful rainbow (my survivial ) comes out.   I also asked him if he could incorporate my daughters names into it, I don't want it to look too busy so may go back and get that somewhere else. Yikes did I say that? So we will see what he comes up with in a week. His place was in a little town near us and it was clean and he is soo sweet... lots of tattoos and very nice. I feel completely comfortable there, some places scare me but really you can't always judge a book by it's cover.

I dreamed of my tattoo during surgery (14 hrs) that is how I knew it was right.  I dreamed of one for my husband too but he is not going there.

Stoneaxe that is amazing.. your daughter must be so proud of you. I can see her now showing it off and talking about you! Love is grand!

Michelle  ;D

If you dreamed of your tatoo during your surgery, then that is definitely a sign you must not ignore. Good luck. I had a tattoo on my eyebrows years back (eyebrows that never fade), but that's the extent of mine!

Stoneaxe,

That is absolutely beautiful and very sweet of your daughter!  I think you did a great job!  Are you going to the symposium?  You might be able to pay for your trip by giving tattoos at the hotel!   :D

Michelle, when I got my first tattoo, the guy told me that once you get one, you always go back to get another one.  I laughed and told him he was out of his mind and that there was no way I'd be getting another.  Well, he was right... I did.  That was enough for me though.   :D

Michelle...what a great idea for a tattoo. The symbolism is perfect. Getting a tattoo because you like them and want one is fine. Getting one with a deep meaning that helps remind you of something special is different. It's a reminder, with you forever, that causes you to reflect.

Hehe...I don't think i'll be doing many more. I was nervous as anything. All i could think of was messing it up...my hands were shaking. I'll stick to paper and pencil....or pyrography....actually i hear thats the new fad....branding....yowch.. :o. i'll bring my woodburning gear if your interested... ;)

Who likes Whales.... ;D
(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa317/stoneaxe/nauset2003.jpg)

This is from the face of a paddle that I made and auctioned for charity. Made a wonderful friend in the guy that bought it. He and I planned the CCBC together. He has a tattoo of a humpback and two calves on his shoulder. Symbolizing his wife and two sons and his love of the ocean and whales.

Ok, so am I the only one around here without any marketable skills?   ???

That is a very touching story about the man and his tattoos - however, I think I would prefer my husband to pick something other than a whale to symbolize me!  Maybe a dolphin..a shark... even a guppy??

LOL....I asked him about that....he said she was fine with it...I guess it helps that she is a very slender and also loves the ocean and whales. My wife said if I ever put a whale on my arm to symbolize her she would harpoon me....even though she is about as petite as she was in high school.... ;)

Hi everyone!

Michelle - your daughter's tattoo is beautiful! What an honor for you!  :)
Stoneaxe -  i think it was VERY special that you did a tattoo for your daughter!  Amazing!  :D

Gee - makes me think i should consider a tattoo...  My own daughter had a henna tattoo once on her back, and i thought it was very pretty.  But she surely 'freaked out' her dad, until he found out it wasn't permanent!  :o

I like turtles - alot!  You know, slow and steady wins the race.  In the Springtime, i will stop, pull over and move box turtles to a safe place out of the roadway, so they don't get hit by a car.  (But my husband did warn me not to pick up the snapping turtles!)
In the Cayman Islands and Hawaii i have seen the big tortoise/turtles - they are such peaceful, graceful creatures.

Can't wait to see more tattoo pics!

Very, very sweet and cool Stone.  My husband would have fainted at the propect of doing it himself.  I'm not sure I would have let him!   ;)

My wife was away on business when I did it. She probably wouldn't have let me either. She wasn't very impressed when she heard of it I have to admit. Although when she saw it she did admit that it was pretty cool.

On top of the wing I wrote my children's names out - amanda angela alanna. Each daughter starts and ends with an 'a' so I wrote them out together. amandangelalanna

I had the the wing in black and white and the word Believe in rainbow colours to signify a rainbow after a storm. A rainbow is Gods promise that the worst is over.

Beuatiful tatoo!  I've been thinking of getting another one myself (got my first one for my 40th birthday) and have been toying with the word "Believe" in Chinese symbols.  Maybe if I can get my act together, I can show off my new ink in Chicago.

Debbi -

if you don't get one prior to the symposium, there is a great place in Chicago called Jade Dragon.  It's not downtown, but it isn't too far away.  They work with only one-use needles to cut down on the risk of infection - and other "stuff".

I'm thinking a road trip might be in order.  Isn't MaryBKAriz coming to the syposium in her RV?  Maybe we could talk her into taking us on a field trip  ;)

You know I was only half serious about the road trip to The Jade Dragon.

But today on the way to get my MRI I had a sign from God.  A huge billboard advertising, you guessed it, The Jade Dragon  :D

It mostly mentioned that they do body piercing, so if Kaybo would rather do that than have a tattoo I think it's entirely up to us to support her  ;)

No piercings for me - I'm not that wild - but I'm giving serious consideration to the 2nd tattoo.

Cool tattoo and including your girls names  was a nice touch ... I have too many kids for that ...maybe initials ...
DSTJHS ... nope that looks like a dirty foreign word or something ...

I am planning something less extravagant ... my avatar picture my youngest did and the older daughter is suppose
to be designing something to go with it ...she doesn't want to be left out in this project ...my  9 year old wants
tattooed but told her no even though with parent permission they will... she has honey bees for 4-H and wants a
bee tattooed on her upper arm

my 3 sons available way get a dragon or wizard ... they are 28 year old twins and a 27 year old ... 30 year old is off
playing soldier but would say don't do it ...it's bad when your kids get old enough to think they can tell you what
to do ...makes me feel old

wanted to get it done before day camps and 4-H camp so it would heal before I was out in the sun and brush being
sun burnt scratched and bit by bugs ... may have to wait and get it in July ... I have so much going on right now don't
know when I could squeeze it in before camp starts ... surgery anniversary is July 2 ... that would be cool if I could get
it done on anniversary date ... OK now I have one more thing to try to set up and make happen ...have found 2 places
with good reputations and have looked at some of their work on people not just pictures...

and for the record I don't think I would like piercing or branding ...

Soundy I often thought how great it would be if you got your avatar picture. It has lots of meaning and it is already designed.
My tattoo took 5 days to completely heal and I forget I have it...until I start getting undressed and my husband says "YIKES, I forgot you had a tatttoo!"
Life is good... I think my missing dimple on my cheek is returning! yahooo

I am a bit late to this post but I love both the tattoos....I think a tattoo shows a bit of yourself to the world. I am thinking if my Celtics go all the way this year I may put the shamrock on my shoulder, I have the Patriots flying Elvis on my ankle, should probably keep with the sports theme...  Anyway Nice tats!!!

My tattoo is tiny compared to Michelle's, so it probably doesn't compare, but it wasn't painful at all.

Kind of felt like someone scratching me.

For me it kind of felt like someone scratching a sun burn. Annoying but tolerable.
Still freaks me out to look in the mirror.
I went for my monthly massage and forgot to tell my massage therapist ahead of time... surprise!

How long after your surgery did you all get your tattoo's?

on some other thread in this place I posted about getting my tattoo... I got it last year on July 2 ...my second year anniversary ...got my avatar picture and my daughter is thrilled ...

oldest is designing something that has been changed a million times and she wants put on me this year on my anniversary ... she wants a chain or barb wire bracelet with hearts for each child , then one for her dad and one for my ex husband since according to her , without him she would have no big brothers ... I decided his would be purple and off the chain since he fell out of my life and made me feel like I had been wounded in action and then added a white heart also off the chain but in palm of my hand for the baby boy I lost in 1979

this is close up of my tattoo ...I think the guy did a good job and my youngest blushed as she watch him do it and when we left said he was cute ...

I got my tattoo (date of my AN surgery on the shoulder of my "AN" side) about a year after my surgery.

Although it's not large, I had to think a long time about getting one.  At the age of 46 it wasn't something to take lightly and I worried about being a bad example for my children.  To this day my mother is still shocked that I have one  :D

I've been intending to get an additional tattoo (date of my BAHA surgery) for a few months now, but haven't had the time.

Am still planning on it though.

Yes, I'm certain my mother will be appalled  ::)

Good to see there's a thread for this - love to see everyone's ideas!  I just (today!) finished 5 weeks of Radiation on my AN, and I have the appointment for my AN tattoo scheduled for next week.  I already have 6 tattoos (over the last 11 years), and have been wanting to get a music inspired one for quite a while (I'm a classical pianist) but couldn't decide what I wanted.  After being diagnosed with AN, and the resultant hearing problems, it really impacted my ability to both play and listen to music.  I decided to combine my music interest and my AN reminder.  The tattoo will be a treble clef (all black) 1 inch tall on my neck just below my left ear.  It symbolizes my love for music, celebrates the end of my radiation, and is a reminder to my spouse which is my deaf side...  :)   I'll post a picture after it's done.

I was 47 and a half when I got mine ...thought about it for a year before getting up last July 2 and saying to my girls let‘s go get this done ...then about 30 minutes after getting it wanted another ...

Hannah thinks too much sometimes ... I like her idea and my adjustments to it ...she also wants to put a character that she draws named Weirdo ...just his head , as a center charm ... he kinda looks like a capital G ... some how he blew his part head off ... but in a good way ...hard to explain that part

Weirdo came about when Hannah was being sexually harassed at school by a group of boys ... ... due to them only being in 4th through 6th grade little was done aside from putting them in lunch detention and telling the m to stop ... before we knew why she was pulling hair out , a 4th grader  had been popping her on the behind and told her to take a joy ride on his lap ... she was in 5th grade at the time and started pulling her hair instead of telling  since teachers are constantly complaining to the kids about tattling ... she was pulling bald spots on her head to deal with it and hated going to school ...

after we found out from a boy who told his mom what the others were doing , we talked to Hannah and had our doctor talk to her  and she got a few some tips from her big brothers that were not necessarily Mom approved … she quit pulling her hair out and started drawing Weirdo comics ...

the boys who were bothering her have been ran over by trucks , drop from airplanes on pointy mountain tops , ate by lions , stretched til they are just sticks ...you name it and she has done it to them in form of the comic ... the comic kinda disturbed me at first , but the doctor said it was a healthy way she came up with to deal with things ...

after one of the boys popped her behind she whirled on him and told him that her brothers had told her how to knee him where it hurts and repeat as often as necessary ... and that when she was taken to the principal for hurting him that she was cool with it because he had no right to touch her and she had a right to protect herself ...also told him that her mom approved ...that part was about half true ... she needs to know she can defend herself but I don't approve of hitting ... but the threat was made last fall and they all quit ...I think word spread that Hannah was gonna hurt them if they bothered or touched her again …the school nurse heard her make the threat and called me cheering Hannah on …

I talked to the principal and she told me that if Hannah hit any of the boys ,  she would be force to put her in detention or suspend her … but she  would also deal with the boys more strongly …the boys are all in SPED (special Ed) and are not punished like kids not in SPED… none are severely learning disable but get extra help in reading and math … part of the Tennessee interpretation of no child left behind allows them to get away with things they shouldn’t… you can’t punish a child that knows no better the way you would a child in all regular classes  …kind like the loop hole that has them at special Olympics racing against kids with crutches and wheel chairs … 2 are on school basket ball team and on plays foot ball … not kids that Special Olympics was intended for , but they go  …

hopefully this coming year will be better … she has put up with this mess from Spring of 2007 until fall 2009 … time to be 100% clear of it

All that said just to say that Weirdo can find a place in my next tattoo … he represents to me that Hannah is strong … and no one except us will know that the G with an eye is anything other than just that … and may be getting it at the end of the week if things go as planned …

Hannah has 2 years to go before heading off to high school … hope she keeps the strength and voice that Weirdo has given her … it scares me to even think about sending her to our over crowded high school …

Hannah's tattoo design is officially on my wrist ... her Weirdo character's head is off set a bit from center of my wrist and where the bracelet goes around to inside of wrist it is not perfectly straight because life ain't perfect ... my kid thinks too much ... when the man was placing stencil he followed her directions ...when he colored in her light purple heart he said "your mom must love you to let you design this and then actually put it on he arm ...Hannah who is not a crier and rarely shows emotion got teary ... then got goofy to hide the tears ...

the white heart for the baby is light blue and is up on arm above the bracelet ...was told white might not last and also that tattoos on palms often fade out so it is baby blue and floating up above the bracelet ... purple heart for ex is down on back of my hand ... thought of not including it but did and glad ... me and Hannah know what the disconnected purple heart is for ...others will have to wonder ... the tattoo man was asking what each heart meant ... he said when someone says they have to have an exact number of something and in specific colors he knows it's for something ... when I was telling him about the hearts and left the purple one and the light blue one out , he looked at me and said it is a pain or a loss or both ... I just smiled and left it at that ... no one but me knows what the baby blue heart is for... when I lost him at 6 months into pregnancy ,  ex said we didn't really need another baby and others said there would be others ... lost him July 1 1979 and still miss him

when it is healed I will post a picture ...

Soundy, can't wait to see the latest tattoo and sounds very speciial!                 I am also sorry to hear of the loss of a baby.    It is something a mother does not forget.        I lost one at only maybe 6-7 weeks and one always wonders what they would have looked like.     Mine was getting pregnant with an IUD in.   It would be so much harder at the stage you were in.    A big hug to you!                                Cheryl R

Although I remain ambivalent about tattoos (I don't have one) I do have to admire your motivations to have your tattoos as well as the thought (between you and your daughter) that went into them..  Now, I'm looking forward to seeing a photo of your tattoo because I appreciate creativity and respect the sentiments that are expressed in the 'body art' you now proudly wear.  My condolences on the loss of your baby, so long ago.  Ironically, in the same year my son was born (9/2/79) demonstrating ( I suppose) that the circle of life is infinite.

I would never have thought that I would have a tattoo and now have two ...

both fairly plain and simple ... and both mean something ... other than the son who brought me a key , the girls and Bo no one knows about it yet ... gonna catch flack and don't care but don't want to hear it ... the whole first week of July is always hard for me ... then I move on ... the twins birthday is July 11th and that helps ... sometimes I think I was given two to make up for the one taken ...the circle of life going on  ... but it doesn't work that way ...this time next year or anytime I wonder about Brandon , the tiny baby I loved and lost I can put my finger on that heart and connect ...dumb sounding I guess but that is where my emotions are running right now ... I often wonder who he would look like ... tall and dark like his dad and the twins ... shorter and red headed like my oldest son ... or somewhere in between like my youngest son ... would he like sports , none of the others do ... would he breeze through school like the oldest and youngest did or struggle like the twins had to ... list goes on ... he has always been with me but this is a visual reminder that no one but me knows...

the whole design that Hannah came up with is healing for her and she knows that when I see it I will think of her ... and Weirdo character that saved her sanity when she was not getting help at the school level when she really needed it , connects us because I get it and stood by her ...it is a remembrance of my family and healing  for both of us ...the thing with making it not perfectly lined up because life is not perfect hurts because she has learned too soon that the world can be cruel ... but it shows me she is strong and can deal with things when she thinks she has no where else to turn ... better than knocking them in the head for real with whatever is handy as was done by some other girls being harassed ...

Got my tattoo today (lucky no. 7)!! As mentioned previously, I chose a treble clef for 2 reasons: 1. to mark my love for classical music and 2. to celebrate completing 5 weeks of radiation for my AN! I put it on the left side as that is where the AN is, and also as a reminder to my spouse which is my partially deaf side... ;)  Done by Rick Wilson at Strange World Tattoo in Calgary.  The lower left of the clef curve is a bit ragged - I will have to see how it heals and likely go in for some touch ups. But overall, I'm very happy with it!

This is my seventh - it is the smallest and took the least time (10 mins).  If you have a tattoo and know what it feels like, this was nothing.  It's in a muscle, so no real pain.  The longest one I had was about 2 hours on my leg/ankle, and I actually fell asleep - the repetitive motion was sort of soothing...  :)  Kinda like a massage therapist - it hurts, but it's a good hurt. The bracelet I have on my wrist hurt the most when they were going over the tendons on the inside of my arm - had to bite my tongue.  And I had to have it done twice (I had it 'fixed' about 2 years after)!  The ones that are over fleshy or big muscle parts hurt the least.  I don't know how people get the big ones on the spine - I think that would hurt.  Feet too.  If you haven't had a tattoo, the best way I can explain it is that it feels like someone is scratching you hard enough to draw blood...repeatedly.  After the fact, it feels like a bad sunburn (hot and itchy!).

Palm of your hand would be interesting - it's pretty fleshy so it probably wouldn't hurt too much (I guess that's relative!) at the time, but the 3 weeks of healing would suck.  You basically wouldn't be able to use your hand, and you have to be careful not to get/keep it wet.  Also, I'm not sure about longevity in that location - gets a lot of 'wear', not sure how it would stand up.  I don't know anyone personally with a palm tattoo - it would be good to ask someone who has one.  Is a neat idea!

cool cleft ... I am thinking I need a little STOP sign under my AN ear ...

I know you were probably talking to Tomcat but will answer anyway ... the first one of my avatar picture only took about 15 minutes to do ... about 45 minutes for my bracelet ...for me it was just a little tingly feeling as it was done except when doing bracelet when he went over that little nub of bone that sticks up on the outside of wrist... that for whatever reason sent a little shock like feeling up my arm , making me jump ... which  caused him to bobble a bit so he had to smooth out edge of the heart so the line is thicker there than intended ... but that plays into Hannah's  "life is not perfect" part of the design ...first couple days it felt like a mild sunburn ...neither ever got scabby like I was told they would do but a little peeling around edges is going on right now and it itches a bit ... May have to touch up some color on two of the hearts

I was told palm tattoos don’t last due to wear and tear and that the skin .. That is where I wanted to put the heart for the baby I lost so I could close my hand when thinking of him … kind of like holding him … now he floats up above the rest …my little angel … they would have put it in my palm but I didn’t want to have to go back and retouch it ever so often

Keri ...as for family thinking you are crazy , a few of mine did think so at first when I got the first one but got over it ... now they think I am crazy for other things ...like walking all through the night at relay ... reading when I should be sleeping  ... volunteering my time at school ...staying involved with Cub Scouts when my youngest son is almost 29 ... one person with a pierced nose really thought I was nuts ...told me that the tattoo was permanent  , like the hole in her nose wasn’t …I don’t mind her piercing but sometimes she doesn’t put anything in it and just has this hole there … just had to stare in disbelief at her when she was negative about what I have done  ...

very few know about this new one ... my Mom is on her way over and will be introduce to it ... she will be mad that I didn't invite her along on the trip since she wants to get some kind of tattoo as a reminder to keep fighting her cancers ... a ribbon or pink butterfly on upper arm ... when she gets her nerve up I will go with her and probably end up with something on me to honor her ... but these first two were connecting with my kids and didn't want extra company along

well, i think y'all have talked me out of a palm tatoo! mostly because i don't have time to let my hand heal.  thanks for the info... we'll see what happens. it's one of those things that i think would be cool to do but i'll just probably never make time for it.

Keri, a henna tattoo is an intricate design drawn with henna on the skin. My daughter had one done at a craft festival once. I think it stayed vivid about a week and lasted about ten days before it faded away.

I have one on my foot and it wasn't bad at all...I think they hurt more when they're on your torso than on an extremity....just my 2 cents after having 2 done on my back.  I really want to get one that signifies my journey, but can't seem to decide what...I don't want it to be as obvious as a date(it can involve the date in it) and it has to be creative.
Anyone have ideas for me?
Title: Re: Tattoo
Post by: Soundy on July 09, 2010, 09:05:01 am
that is what I like about mine ... their meanings  are not obvious to every one ...

Sarah's drawing of me with a headache that was drawn before tumor was found signifies to me that I was not conquered by it and lived to tell the tale ...

Hannah's bracelet also would mean little to anyone we didn't choose to explain it too ...

both are private between me and my girls ...only shared when and with who we wish to ( like here ) ...I think of them as mini monuments

my advise would be to think of something that is important to you and is something that you still have or can do even after your AN surgery that you thought you may no longer have ... for me thinking I would no longer be here with my family is in my bracelet Hannah did ...tie your tattoo to your life and who you are

the bracelet is my family ...all the links are the extended ones ...sisters , brothers , mom , dad , grand kids etc  ... to many to add hearts for so the bracelet is them and hearts for those closet to me and the two major losses  in my life , that are still a big part of me ...my ex who I thought I would grow old with and who I miss terribly some days ...like when our son was not accounted for for several months in Iraq ...I wanted to talk to him but didn't ...he gave me my sons ...we had a 20 year often rocky life together ( from 15 year old school girl til end of marriage that lasted 18 years )  but good times too and it is hard sometimes to know we are no more ... and Bo's green heart ( green because he is a farmer and likes green fields ...sometimes things are just that simple) reminds me that when I thought I could never love again or let someone love me that I could ... he accepted me and my sons as a whole and put me back together emotionally ... that a 12 year old took what we talked about and came up with it amazes me ...she got it all and added her Weirdo face to put her there with me and it signifies strength
Title: Re: Tattoo

Soundy thanks for sharing your tattoo meanings...I think its very important for them to have meaning, but its hard to figure out what to do....I'm working on it, and I think having one that signifies my surgery to me is really all that matters.  Nobody else needs to look at it and understand.
Talk to you soon,

that is why it took Hannah a year to get her design just how she wanted it
