Title: May I Knit You A Hat?
Post by: sgerrard on January 27, 2009, 10:26:36 am
Well it has finally happened - I have managed to knit a hat. This is the Easy Peasy pattern from Knit Picks, which is about the easiest a hat can be, with only a small serving of frustration along the way. The yarn is 70% Peruvian Highland Wool, 30% Superfine Alpaca, and about 100 yards long - the length of a football field. It was knit on a 16" size 10 circular needle. You can read all about it here: http://www.knitpicks.com/Easy+Peasy+Hat+Pattern_PD50694220.html

(http://stevegerrard.home.comcast.net/thehat.JPG)   (http://stevegerrard.home.comcast.net/me-hat.JPG)

So now what? I still have to work out the size a little better, and maybe try a rib knit edge instead of the rolled edge. Then I guess I start knitting hats.  :)

WHOO-HOO for you!!  I am so impressed!  Who would have know what would have come about from some comments about a Friday Night KNITTING Club book??  I'm with Cheri - that color certainly makes your eyes POP!  I think the next should be Jan's GREEN one.  I'm not sure what color I want yet...hmmmm...I definitely like the rolled rim!

Steve,

Absolutely STUNNING!  What talent!  The blue is definitely your color!

Can't wait to see what other talents you have hidden up your sleeve!

Lori - sure could use a warm hat here today!

I also think you should change your profile picture to the one with the hat.

I'm impressed!  Great job on the hat!  Should we place our symposium orders now or later?  ;)

OMG, STEVE!!!  :o

I never thought I'd live to see the day - it's a good thing I don't have a weak heart LOL  And to think I doubted you  :P

I really can't believe you knit a hat!  The rolled rim is very chic and the color looks wonderful with your blue eyes.

I am partial to green, but the blue would look good with my eyes, too  ;)

I think the next one you knit should be for Donnalynn's husband, Jim.  I'll gladly let him cut in line in front of me.

IMO you should sell them at the symposium for the cost of your yarn plus a "little extra".  You could either use the "little extra" for your hard work - or you could donate it to the ANA.  Donations are a great tax deduction  ;D

Steve,

Along with everyone else, I'm completely impressed! (Not that I thought you didn't have the talent  ;), but I'm surprised you found the time between your job and the forum!)

And I agree that the blue really works for you - it looks great!

Steve,
If you decide that the blue doesn't work for you, it might work just fine for me!  Although for a small person I have a big head so you might want measurements.  See what trouble you've gotten yourself into now?  May I knit YOU a hat?

Steve:

It's beautiful. Can i order a red hat? And can I get a matching scarf with mine? You see winter has been brutal for my post-surgery head and neck. I have to keep my head and neck warm or else I get instant headaches. My head is larger than your typical one size fits all hats. So mine will require extra yarn. I'll pay extra, that's not a problem. With my larger head, you'd think that my tumor could've found a corner where it didn't have to disrupt anything in there. But, I'm getting off the subject. Yes, I'll take a matching red hat and scarf set.

Steve, you are a man of many talents!  I do believe Rosy Grier, big, bad football player, liked to do needlepoint, and he has a book on that for men.   It was his "Zen" thing, I guess.

I'd like a red one please! ;D ;D

Wow, Steve!

What a fantastic hat you've made! I thought that "May I knit you a hat?" only was a yoke. But, how wrong I was!  :D

I can only agree with the others on the forum, that the blue really match your eyes!

I'm actually imagine myself in a hat with a lot of colours ... Hmm... I sort of like all colours so it will be a problem to choose colours for my hat ...
I'll think about that.

The darker blue hat is super and you really do look neat in it.     I'm into pastels big time so would go for pink or lt blue!        You should probably not quit your day job but you have good potential here!                                            Cheryl R

Steve:

Congratulations!  To be honest, I wouldn't wear a knit hat on a bet.  On guys, I think they lower your I.Q. 10 points.  Ladies look cute in them, though.  Still, I have to admire your tenacity in learning a new skill.  I'm sure the orders will be rolling in so fast you may have to abandon your 'real' job to keep up with the demand.  Good luck - and again, kudos to you for following through and actually knitting a hat.

Hi Steve -
Absolutely amazing -- kudos to you for actually knitting a hat!!!  You certainly are a multitalented guy -- poetry (An Acoustic Neuroma Christmas), knitting, and I'm sure much, much more.  By the way -- it just so happens my winter coat is blue and I never did find a hat I liked this year  (hint, hint)  :D  To paraphrase Wimpey (does anyone remember him from Popeye the Sailor Man?) I'd gladly pay you next Tuesday for a great knit hat todday!   :D

OK Steve,
Blue definitely works for you.  I am impressed!  I will need red, I think.  I turned 60 on January 5, so I guess I belong to the Red Hat club now.  Very nice work w/the knitting :D

OOOO-WEEE don't thet purty blue hat make them Baby Blues look sweet, Steve!  You be one handsome scallywag, Matey!!

I'm puttin me order in fer this'n!

A proper Captain hat aye!

I've got miles and miles of sparkly yarns leftover from me surgical-recuperating scarf knitting days.  I knitted so much I blew out my lateral epicondrial tendon and had to have surgery.  Doc said no more knitting or I'd never paint again. Now me brother and Dr Love tie flies wiv some of it or I may buy a loom or something or I may put it on ebay but I virtually have a closetful of the dang stuff! I sold a bunch of scarves to a few local shops, but I am over the door to door peddling business.  Mayby I'll just bring them to Chicago and give 'em to my girls!

Thanks everyone for all your kind words. I have to say, I was a little surprised myself!

I have changed my avatar picture, as suggested.

I have asked several women to try on the hat, and agree with Jim to some extent - it looks better on women. For some reason even though this one is fairly large, to fit my big head, it looks fine even on the dainty headed ones. I think the rolled brim is fashionable for women, but perhaps less so for men. At some point I will attempt a rib knit brim, to give it more of the watch cap look. Maybe that will get Jim interested.

Capt Deb, I'm not sure I appreciate your news that this knitting business is hazardous to my health! Hopefully I can at least avoid getting hurt doing this.

I will let you know how the second hat goes, and PM you if it comes time to start mailing them out. If you want to pick your color directly, I would suggest looking at any of the bulky weight yarns at Knit Picks. They even have some multi-color yarns, if you are like Helene and can't pick just one.
http://www.knitpicks.com/bulky+weight+knitting+yarn_YL30010107.html

Oh, and one more thing. I think one requirement for receiving a hat should be that you have to post a picture of you wearing it. I've posted mine. :)

Steve~
OF COURSE I'll put a picture up of me wearing the hat that YOU knit for me - I'll even start putting up pictures of me wearing OTHER hats if that would move me up in the line.  I hope my name is on the list - after Jan, of course... ;D

K

OK!!  We could ALL change our profile pictures when we get our knitted hats from Steve...on 2nd thought, that might scare the newbies into thinking that we were some hat cult or some crazy thing like that (or just CRAZY!)  or that we all have to wear them b/c of loss of hair or scarring or something!

Hank??  Now you're trying to set me up with a guy named Hank, Kay  ::)

So, tell me, is Hank a doctor or a lawyer?  I swore I'd never marry for love again.  The second time it's going to be a financial transaction ;)  LOL

I'm liking the Cardena stuff....maybe because I like the names of the yarn!  I'm trying to decide between Saffron and Cranberry  Then again, maybe I'm just hungry and need to go eat some breakfast. :D.  I would cheerfully appear on the forum modeling your handiwork. It's only fair, after all.
One of the guys in my Bible study group has done cross stitching for years, and he's way better than I ever thought about being. You rock!

Steve, I think knitting injuries are extremely rare. Deb is the first and only victim I have ever heard of. Of course, in a room full of ANA and HFS (Hi Angie!) folks, rare don't mean too awful much. Still, I think you can rest easy on that score. Especially since you are using circular needles and don't have to sew a seam on a flat knit piece. The tapestry needles would be more conducive to injury, I think.

My daughters are still crazy over knitting hats and scarves on their circular looms, so I'll let everyone else get in line ahead of me. I do want to post some pics of their handiwork though. I think you would like them.

Steve, there is a site www.knitlikeapirate.com that has instructions for some pretty cool projects including the wacky purple tricorn which I posted.  The only way you can really harm yourself is if you knit lots and lots on paikillers for headaches because I was bored out of my mind! Iwas also holding 3-4 yarns together which crooks your fingers.OUCH! I'll post a few pics of the scarves when I get back home. They are really cool and sold for $150 in the stores. I have about a dozen left. They look kind of like sparkly feather boas made of 16 kinds of yarn. I wish I could still knit. I loved it so!

I am late to the party ... love the hat.

If you ever get bored knitting for the AN crowd, the preemie ICU (NICU) take hats for their little ones!

Then, if you ever get bored doing that - I have six heads in my house - and four of them go through at least one hat each winter - I buy a lot of hats!

Hi Steve!

I love your hat. Congrats on taking up your new endeavor. You did so well. We'll have to do a trade - a decorated cane for an original knit hat by Steve (red?). ;D

Seriously, you are great! You have been such a support for me. Things are better here, just as you predicted. (Another side line for you, maybe?)
