Title: VITAMINS POST SURGERY
Post by: FAITH40 on January 07, 2009, 07:29:13 am
HI EVERYONE,

I JUST WANTED TO SHARE SOME INFO WITH YOU ALL THAT MY NEUROLOGIST GAVE TO ME THAT HAS REALLY MADE A MIRACULOUS DIFFERENCE IN MY HEALING PROCESS.

I WENT TO THE DR.  ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO BECAUSE I HAD A POST OP SIEZURE. SHE DID BLOOD WORK THAT SHOWED HER I WAS DEFICIENT FOR VITAMIN B-6 AND B-12 OTHER B VITAMINS AS WELL. ALL THE MEDICATIONS FROM THE SURGERY HAD DEPLETED MY SYSTEM OF THESE VERY IMPORTANT VITAMINS. SHE STARTED ME ON A HIGH DOSE OF THESE VITAMINS IMMEDIATELY. SHE ALSO INFORMED ME OF THE HEALING EFFECT IT WOULD HAVE ON MY BODY(FACIAL NERVE, BALANCE, EYE)  NOT TO MENTION  THE HEADACHES,  THE COGNITIVE AND EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS....I HAVE NEVER BEEN AN ADVOCATE FOR VITAMINS, BUT NOW I AM!!! I AM AMAZED AT THE POITIVE RESULTS IT HAS MADE! THE WOBBLENESS "WE" ALL FEEL HAS ALMOST GONE COMPLETELY. I WOULD TELL MY NEUROSURGEON  OVER AND OVER ABOUT THE FEEINGS OF MY HEAD GETTING BIGGER AND BIGGER (NOONE SEEMED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT) THAT WAS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING! MY WONDERFUL NEUROLOGIST SEEMED TO HAVE THE ANSWERS THOUGH ( VITAMINS) !!! AT FIRST I WAS SCEPTICAL BUT AFTER A FEW DAYS OF TAKING THEM I WAS SOLD!!! I DON'T MISS A DAY !

I HOPE THAT EVERYONE POST OP AND PRE OP WILL GET AS MUCH INFO ON ALL THE B-VITAMINS AND THE ROLE THEY PLAY IN OUR BODIES AND HEALTH. GET TESTED TO SEE IF YOU ARE DEFICIENT FOR THESE VITAMINS , EVEN IF YOU ARE ON THE LOW SIDE OF NORMAL YOU NEED OR  SHOULD HAVE MORE (STATISTICS SHOW) . IT IS A SIMPLE BLOOD TEST.

I LOOKED UP  (Methylcobalamin - ( VITAMIN B -12 )  "VITAMIN B-12 AND NERVE REGENERATION" " VITAMIN B12 AND BELLS PALSY"  "ALL THE B- VITAMINS"  "VITAMIN B12 AND THE BRAIN"  THESE ARE JUST A FEW THINGS I LOOKED UP, BUT I SAW SEVERAL SITES THAT WERE VERY INFORMATIVE! I JUST WANTED TO LEARN ALL THAT I COULD ABOUT THESE VITAMINS AND WHAT THEY COULD DO FOR ME!

I BUY MORE BRAIN FOODS NOW, AND REALLY TRY TO EAT HEALTHY! I JUST WISHED I HAD STARTED THEM SOONER!  IT HAS MADE SUCH A DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE, THAT I JUST HAD TO SHARE THIS WITH EVERYONE.  I WOULD HAVE NEVER DREAMED A SIMPLE VITAMIN WOULD CURE SO MANY PROBLEMS FOR ME ALL AT ONCE!! SHE ALSO PUT ME ON RIBOFLAVIN AND CO Q 10......

I FEEL SOOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER AND I HOPE YOU WILL TOO !!!  ;)

GOOD LUCK TO ALL,
TAMMI

I had always taken vitamins and have a mom who was "healthy" way before her time - she was making yogurt and mixing it with fruit for us before YoPlait!  That being said, I took TONS of vitamins after my surgery.  Mom went to the health food store and  they worked up a regimen specifically for me.  I am a believer in vitamins and an overall "healthier" lifestyle.  I am so happy that they have helped you so much and would encourage others to give them a try.  HOWEVER, I would not want anyone to have false hopes that vitamins are a miracle and going to cure them of everything.  Even though I have a great life and I believe that vitamins have played a role in making me feel better and have more energy, the fact remains that I still have a face that is paralyzed.  I consider myself an optimist...but also a realist and just want everyone to be informed both ways!   :D

HI KAY,

THANX FOR YOUR REPLY! I HOPE ALL IS WELL! ;)

KAY, IS YOUR FACIAL PARALYSIS PERMANENT ? YOU ARE CORRECT THAT VITAMINS DO NOT HEAL WHAT IS IMPOSSIBLE, BUT THEY DO HELP OUR BODIES REGENERATE AND REJUVENATE  WHAT CAN BE.  I WOULD RATHER HAVE THEM THAN NOT HAVE THEM , BECAUSE  OTHER THAN MY FACIAL NERVE, THERE HAS BEEN SO MANY OTHER PROBLEMS THE VITAMINS HAVE HELPED ME WITH... I JUST FEEL BETTER!!!  ;)  MY NEUROSURGEON TOLD ME HE SAVED MY FACIAL NERVE, BUT IT HAD TAKEN SUCH A BEATING, BECAUSE IT WAS WRAPPED AROUND MY TUMOR AND STRETCHED TO THE MAX! HE EXPLAINED TO ME THAT HE WAS NOT SURE HOW MUCH OF IT WOULD COME BACK. I WAS NOT SEEING BIG RESULTS UNTIL I BEGAN TAKING  MY VITAMINS, SO NEEDLESS TO SAY I FEEL THEY PLAYED A BIG PART! OF COURSE THE GOOD MAN ABOVE IS WHO GETS ALL THE CREDIT!  ;)

I JUST HOPE SOMEONE THAT WAS UNAWARE OF THIS INFO  AND THE IMPORTANCE  THAT THESE VITAMINS HAVE ON OUR BODIES CAN SEE HOW THEY CAN HELP THEM.....  I WISHED I HAD STARTED THEM SOONER, BECAUSE I COULD HAVE SAVED MYSELF ALOT OF TURMOIL MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY.... I DO BELIEVE!

Yes, I'd say 13 years is probably pretty permanent!   ;D  I did start the vitamins within the first month or two - it's all kind of a blur now it was so long ago.  I definitely am a big believer in vitamins...just wanted to let people know that they are not a miracle cure for everyone!

Peace,
K

KAY,

YES, EVEN IF I COULD NOT GET ANY HELP WITH THE PARALYSIS, JUST HELPING WITH THE OTHER SYMPTONS THAT CAUSE SO VERY MUCH MENTAL AND PHYSICAL STRESS AND STRAN ON OUR BODIES IS WORTH IT ALL!  ;)

OF COURSE I WAS DEFICIENT, WHICH MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE ONCE I BEGAN TAKING THE VITAMINS! MY BODY WAS SO DEFICIENT THAT I WAS SHUTTING DOWN AND AT RISK FOR A STROKE ( HIGH HOMOCYSTIEN) LEVEL) AND I HAD NO IDEA! :o .... YOUR BODY HAS TO HAVE THESE VITAMINS TO FUNCTION MUCH LESS HELP IN ANY HEALING PROCESS ! DID I MENTION THAT MY VITAMINS WERE HIGH DOSAGE AND PRESCRIBED BY MY DR. ? I WAS ALSO ON VANCOMYACIN ( FOR A BRAIN INFECTION) FOR 45 DAYS WHICH HELPED DEPLETE MY SYSTEM OF THESE VITAMINS...  :o NOW I KNOW!

FEELING MUCH BETTER,
TAMMI ;)

Faith,

I've also read about the benefits of the B vitamins for nerve healing.  I started taking B-complex (figured I'd get 'em all in there together!) shortly after my surgery.  I don't know if it's helping, but I know it's not doing any harm, so I'm sticking with it.

Glad you're doing well.

Lori
p.s.  Dr. Haynes is a nice guy, isn't he?  They're all really nice there.

Tammi,

I agree with you 100%.  I was not on any vitamin regiment because my neurosurgeon said that unless my diet was really poor I was probably getting enough B vitamins.  However, at the time that I had my yearly physical I was really run down and so tired I sometimes felt too tired to even drive home from work some days.  I was also having memory issues.  Forgetting words or losing track of my thoughts in mid sentence, etc.  She put me on a vitamin that has easily digestible B-Vitamins in it.  It's called Cerefolin NAC and requires prescription. I think it is prescribed to Alzheimer patients.  :) Almost immediately I felt better.  Within a few weeks I had my first facial movement.  Might have been coincident but I don't think so.  When the prescription ran out and I didn't re fill right away I could tell a difference as well.  I will keep them filled from now on.  THey have been a life saver.

I feel better now than in years!

THanks for sharing.

Susan

Thanks for the post.  I have been taking a B complex (liquid, sub-lingual) since surgery.  I am recovering slowly but recovering nonetheless.  I don't know if the B's help, but they can't hurt and I plan to continue them.

I've been taking B6 and B12 since the summer.  I'm taking 100 mcg of each, just wondering if that is enough?

Now here's a little info about the lack of B vitamins.  Last year my cousin joined a boot camp for weight lose and exercise and because the food was so restricted she was passing out.  Her husband made her go to the Dr after the second fainting spell and the fact that she lost at least 50% of her hair.  She had blood work done, her body was severely depleted of vitamin B12.  She now takes it in a liquid form and has continued the exercise boot camp.  Her hair did come back but she started the restricted diet late fall and her hair fell out again.  She's has an appointment to see a nutritionist

Can see why I do NOT partake in any type of boot camp?  I like my nice thick hair, gray and all  ;)  Oops what gray?

ANNE,

HI, THANX FOR YOUR POST! ;) ARE YOU TAKING A PRESCRIPTION VITAMIN OR OVER THE COUNTER? I AM TAKING 100 MG OF A PRESCRIPTION VITAMIN, BUT I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THE OVER THE COUNTER STRENGTH. I WOULD ASK YOUR DR. JUST TO MAKE SURE...

I AM SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR COUSIN, THATS TERRIBLE!I HOPE SHE GETS SOME HELP SOON!   I KNOW THE EFFECTS OF BEING DEFICIENT FOR THESE VITAMINS... IT IS NO PICNIC!!  ::)  I WAS LOSING MY HAIR AS WELL.. OF COURSE I CAUGHT IT PRETTY SOON...

I HEAR ALOT OF PEOPLE ON HERE COMPLAIN OF FATIGUE AND NO ENERGY AFTER THEIR SURGERY. I WAS THE SAME WAY UNTIL I BEGAN THESE VITAMINS.

ANNE, WHAT IS GREY??? !!!  ;D

Hi Tammi,

I found your post very interesting.  I have not had surgery yet, I'm a newbie and just doing all my research now and going for my consultations.  I am trying to get on a healthier diet and just started taking a multi-vitamin...but I am not good about taking them every day but after reading your post I got up to go take mine for today...lol

Glad to hear you and others are getting some results and are feeling better.

Best of wishes to you

DAWN,

HI, AND THANX FOR YOUR POST!  ;) I AM SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOU HAVE THIS VERY UNFORTUNATE THINGY!!! I AM SO GLAD YOU ARE TAKING YOUR VITAMINS NOW BEFORE YOUR SURGERY ( I WISHED I HAD) . IT WILL REALLY PAY OFF IN DAYS TO COME! ;)  GOOD GIRL! ;)

IF YOU DRINK COFFEE TRY PUTTING YOUR VITAMINS BESIDE IT OR RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE POT, SO YOU WILL REMEMBER (THATS WHAT I DO). IF YOU DO NOT DRINK COFFEE , THEN PUT THEM ON YOUR NIGHT STAND AND WHEN YOU GO TO BED YOU CAN TAKE THEM!

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VERY SPORATIC ABOUT TAKING VITAMINS ARE MEDS, UNTIL I HAD THIS SURGERY.... NOW I KNOW THAT I HAVE TO TAKE SOME OF THEM, AND I WANT TO TAKE MY VITAMINS!!!!  ;)  I AM SO SOLD ON THEM, BECAUSE OF THE POSITIVE EFFECT THEY HAVE HAD ON ME I ACTUALLY LOOK FORWARD TO TAKING THEM! I HAVE MADE IT A PRIORITY! I JUST THINK ABOUT HOW MUCH IT HELPS ME AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO GO TAKE THEM!  ;)

GOOD LUCK ON THIS JOURNEY, EMBRACE IT AND LEARN ALL YOU CAN AND JUST KNOW THAT YOU ARE NEVER ALONE....SOMETHING GOOD WILL COME OUT OF THIS DAWN!  ;) ;)

OK NOW IT IS TIME FOR ME TO GO TAKE MY WONDERFUL VITAMIN!!! ;D

HAVE A GREAT EVENING DEAR!

I find that the childrens chewable vitamins are harder to forget!  ;D They taste pretty good and while I'm handing them out to the kids, I take one too.  Then since I'm standing right near the cabinet, I remember to take the other stuff.

Now if they could find a way to get all the vitamins I need into a cup of coffee - I'm sure I'd never forget!   :D

And Faith - finally - a Nashville area get-together!  I'm beginning to get jealous of LA, Houston, NY/NJ and Boston!!

Just now catching this thread...B12, huh?  Ok, I'll try it!  Years ago, a doctor told me that my vertigo may be related to a Potassium deficiency, so I took a supplement of that for years.  Have always heard B12 is good for a number of things, so I suppose it wouldn't hurt and if it may indeed help - I'm game.

Thanks,

Cindy

This is a very interesting thread. I've written them down. I've been out of my multi-vitiman (will arrive tomorrow) but I also take D-3, E, magnesium, glucosium/chondroitain and calcium. I get these at a drs office that my daughter works at, although they're not prescription. Anxious now to read the lable on the back to see how much of the B vitamins it has. I'm going to Wally World tomorrow after work - my sinuses have been acting up and my head has been a bit wonky this week - espeically today.

I read on another thread where there was a study that taking 400 mb of Vit E twice a day helped improved a majority of the participants hearing. The doc said that could help and also take lots of antioxidents - that would help too.

My mom about dies when she sees the vitamins and suppliments I take, but I believe they really DO make a difference.

HEY CHERI ;)

I HOPE ALL IS WELL! I HAVE TO TAKE THE FOLIC ACID BECAUSE MY HOMOCYSTIEN LEVELS WERE HIGH. WHICH TOLD MY DR. I WAS AT RISK FOR STROKE, HEART ATTACK ETC.. I WAS ON VANCOMYACIN FOR 45 DAYS AT 3,000 MG PER DAY,FOR A BRAIN INFECTION 3 DIFFERENT TIMES!!  SO IT PRETTY MUCH WIPED OUT MY WHOLE SYSTEM!

MY DR. SAID MY TUMOR HAD CUT OFF THE BLOOD SUPPLY TO MY BRAIN SIGNIFICANTLY AND BASICALLY DEHYDRATED THE DURA PART OF MY BRAIN WHICH HE HAD TO RECONSTRUCT... I HAD BEGUN TO HAVE ALOT OF DISORIENTATION WHEN THEY FOUND THIS MEAN THING! I NEVER KNEW I HAD LOST ANY HEARING, BUT I HAD!  ;) I JUST COULDN'T FIND MY WAY HOME!!!  I AM GUESSING THAT THIS THING COULD CAUSE SOME PROBLEMS WITH ANEMIA IT SEEMS TO CAUSE SO MANY OTHER PROBLEMS!!  ::)

I MEANT TO SAY 2,500 MICRO GRAMS ON THE FOLIC ACID!!     ;)

I AM GLAD YOUR LEVELS WENT BACK UP AFTER YOUR SURGERY! THAT HAS SUSPICIONS THAT THIS MEANY COULD HAVE BEEN YOUR CULPRIT! ;)

I AM SO THANKFUL I AM ALIVE AND WELL TODAY  AND ALL THIS IS BEHIND ME  ;) ARN'T YOU??

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DEAR!

CATHY,

HI,   I HOPE YOUR HEAD GETS BETTER DEAR! I ALSO TAKE VITAMIN D-3 !

I JUST FEEL SO MUCH BETTER ! MY FACE AND HEAD HAVE COME A LONG WAY AND I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT THESE VITAMINS CONTRIBUTED GREATLY TO MY HEALING ALONG WITH THE GREAT PHYSICIAN !  ;)  HERE IS A LITTLE ABOUT THE D-3  THAT I COPIED. I AM SURE YOU KNOW THIS ALREADY, BUT JUST IN CASE SOMEONE ELSE WAS WODERING! ;)

I HOPE YOU GET TO FEELING BETTER!
TAMMI ;)

The main function of vitamin D is to maintain normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood to support bone mineralization (hardening of bones), cell functions, and proper nerve and muscle function.

OK - what I really meant to say was 400 mg, not MB (megabytes). I blame the fact that I am a computer nerd and I was /am tired.  ;D Although, when I looked at my vit e last night, it said 400 iu. Does anyone know the difference?

Thanks, Tammi. I'm hoping it gets better, too. I need to start back on my Allegra, that will help get the sinuses under control. When my daughter got the vitamins for me, the doc also said for me to take the vit D and with the calcium - for the exact reasons that you posted!

HI TO ALL,

JUST TO LET YOU ALL KNOW MY DR. GAVE ME SOME SAMPLES OF THE NEWEST RX OUT THAT HAS BASICALLY THE SAME AS I AM ALREADY TAKING, EXCEPT JUST A LITTLE MORE FOLIC ACID. IT IS CALLED METANX. ASK YOUR DR. ABOUT IT!

I do have to admit that I think the B-12 is helping with the wonky issues. I didn't have many issues - mainly when i'm tired, but it even seems better when I'm tired (like I am right now and am on this site instead of going to bed)  :P

Great advice!!

Cheri,
Back a few posts you were talking about not being able to swallow multivitamins. I also cannot swallow them.. Target just came out with gummi multi for adults. I am taking them. I figure better than nothing. They also have gummi calcium, D and antioxidants. The sugar is minimal in them. Just FYI......
