Title: Wonderful explanation of balance and balance problems - Newbies read this!!
Post by: Sue on October 17, 2008, 03:44:51 pm
http://www.hearinglosshelp.com/articles/balancesystem.htm

This was in another post, and I'm very sorry, but I can't locate it at the moment to give it proper credit.  This is a great explanation of balance and how it all works and what happens when something is not working right.  I printed this out immediately!  I think this deserves it's own subject so, I'm going ahead and posting this, with apologies to the person who called my attention to it.  This was only yesterday, so you'd think I could find it, but I can't at the moment and I am in a hurry, so there you go.  Anyway, I hope everyone sees this and reads this, because it really lays it all out there nicely.  Mine is quite mild, but  I could relate to a lot of this.

Have a great weekend everybody!

Thank you so much for posting that article.  I never knew that it could cause memory problems, and also affect my hand writing.
Those 2 things have been driving me crazy.
I'm 4 months post op, and have not been shopping, or to a mall yet!  That's scary for a woman!!
I just don't feel like going.  Don't know if it's depression or fatigue.
Oh well, it's good when it comes to getting my Visa bill...!!!!
Thanks again,
Lacey

Yeah, I didn't want to take the credit for finding this.  Donnalynn, THANK YOU.  I thought it was a terrific article and I think every newbie should read it.  I wish I'd had this info when I first started this journey.

That really answered a lot of questions for me.  No wonder I have trouble with my eyes when I'm dizzy.  Thanks for posting that.

Thanks!!  I see new people on here asking the questions that we've been talking about for several years now, and some of the issues are explained quite nicely in this article.  At least it is of some comfort to know WHY this is happening.  Then you can figure out what to do about it.

Yeah, I think the doctors should hand this out to every new AN patient.  And after my first reaction to the news that I had a "mass" in my noggin, which was sort of like "whaaaaaaaat?", and after I  muttered "I want my mommy", I am sure it was "AHA!  I'm not nuts!"   :D

Your welcome.  Everything is all interconnected.  One thing affects another thing which affects another thing.  Who would have thought that some minor brain misfires would be the result of balance problems.  That never would have occurred to me.

This was fantastic!  It made me feel so much better about what I have been feeling.  I made my husband listen while I read parts of it to him so he could see that I'm not making this stuff up!

For several years prior to my diagnosis I was having difficulty being a passenger in the car.  It was the weirdest thing.  I became uncomfortable and did the "braking", you know?  I was going with my friend to her out of town jobs for a while, keeping her company, and I'm sure I made her nervous because I was a screaming mimi when we'd get into heavy traffic.  I felt badly about it, but couldn't help myself.  NOW I know why!  I apologized to her and explained the problem when I found all this out.

Thank Sue, and especially Donnalynn for sharing this with us.  It was really an AHA moment for me reading it, so I am going to pass this on to my family and now maybe that won't think me so crazy...well, ok...they still will, but at least I got a plausible excuse now! lol

Yep, that old "I've got a brain tumor, what's your excuse?" thing.  hee hee.  Although I do hate to say I have a brain tumor, because it's not "really" a brain tumor.  But "I've got a skull based tumor, what's your excuse?" just doesn't have the same ring to it!  ;)

Hoo boy...i've got to chime in on this one.  Just read the article, and have bookmarked it, and have copied the link and sent it in email to myself so i can forward it on to several friends and family.  ...i have to admit i was beginning to think i was losing my mind when i started noticing my typing was becoming so slow and contained with tons of reversed letters or doubled letters, etc.  (It took me a while to get this post "cleaned" up so it is readable)  AFter reading this article i realize that i'm not a "drama queen", this is real.

This week I finally had to tell my working partner that I need to take a leave of absence.  It's the job of my dreams, but she and I agree that we cant bill our clients for the time it takes me to type and retype and correct things for folks who are paying by the hour for our work. And believe me, my work speed, thought speed, typing speed has dropped.

Up until now all this (even the existence of the AN) just seemed unreal.  Now it is like things are becoming real.  Yuck.  I am not even ridiing horses right now and that really bothers me.  I do have a great friend who picks me up and drives me to the barn so i can sit with / and be around/ the horses .  Great therapy, and i now have a great excuse for not being able to muck out stalls!!!  Altho at this point i will be glad to once again have the balance to shovel horse poop !

Tricia, you need to read about Vonda, who goes by arkansasfarmgirl.

She was pretty despondent about not being able to ride horses for a while, I think she may even have sold hers. Now she is back in the saddle and going great guns, so to speak. Here is a sample: http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=10051.msg115340#msg115340

You are embarking on what we like to call an AN journey, but you will make it to the other side and discover life after AN ain't so bad after all. You'll see.  ;)

So happy this got popped back up for the newbies.  I thank Donnalynn for finding it in the first place.  This just should be in the newbie packet of information that the doctor hands you.  Not everybody gets all of these symptoms, but I think everybody has something, however subtle, and it sure helps to have it explained the reason WHY this is happening.  Who knew that tiny little balance nerve would have such an important part to play in our lives.

Bumping this to the top.  I think this is so informative....everyone should read this.

Pop quiz:
Why am I dizzy in the dark?
I keep forgetting things.  Why is that?
I feel like I have fog in my brain.  I wonder why?
I'm really tired....what's that got to do with having an AN, for Pete's sake?
I'm okay at home, but take me to the mall, and I go crazy....doesn't make sense...
Why do I have car anxiety?

Read this article and find out.  But wait, there's more!!  Find out how your balance system is a three way deal.
Your Amazing Balance System.  And you don't have to pay a dime to find out all about it!!   Not even $19.99.  ;D ;D ;)

Okay, trying to be clever....not sure it worked.   ^-^

Very informative.  I wear progressive lenses, I wonder if I should switch to a flat lense.
Anyone wants to weigh in on this ?

Think my 10 year old daughter will read the article?  We went hiking this weekend and she was embarrassed that I was hugging every tree that I passed.  Dad used to climb the hills with her, what happened?  Now I know.

Thanks for passing this along.

Thanks for this great article Sue and DonnaLynn.    I've been so preoccupied with my headaces that I've been ignoring my balance.   This fall down half a flight of stairs today really shook me up.   I don't get dizzy, I just fall in my tracks.

Thanks again,
Mei Mei   :o

Hi Chances3 .....

Had a thought about this ..... if you are already used to the progressive lens, you might be just fine.  I just would not change to progressive lens if you did not already have them because as Donnalynn said, it could really mess with your balance with the distortion.

I have trifocal flat lens (did before AN diagnosis).  I am very careful when walking to tip my head down far enough to look over the near-vision range.

Because of my years as an accompanist, I am very much an eye mover, rather than a head mover so progressive lens were never an option for me (I did actually try them.).

Just my thoughts .....
