Title: need a NICE eye patch! beige? white? cute!
Post by: calimama on June 22, 2008, 01:47:06 pm
I had surgery 20 days ago and poor ole left eye wont close and worse, i have double vision!

I have been using a black eye patch i bought at the drug store. The "cup" fits well and is vinyl (i think) so it keeps the light out well, however the thing is so ugly. It is black (cup and elastic) and the elastic is too tight (i dont think my head is SO big!?). MY hubbie took a second one and cut the elastic and made the string less tight, this helps, but the whole thing really looks bad and is right on my face. Since i think i will be using this for a few months i would love to find something a little less... obvious. I asked the opthamologist (nothing) and called a bunch of optomestrists and optical places. NO luck.

Anyone know of any where in US? Perhaps i could order something online...

thanks!

Trish

Trish,

I too had an eye that wouldn't close for a while and had to go around like a pirate. My surgeon's office gave me a clear colored patch as well as a black one. I'm not sure what part of the country you are in but OSU Medical Center here in Columbus, OH had all the stuff that I needed to get over the hump. I'd wake up and my eye felt like I had soap in my eye. The drying effect made it burn and feel sensitive to everything. Best wishes in recovery. -Bucko

Thanks for your reply!

Mr. Google suggests:

Eye Patch Heaven has lots of colorful patterns:

SightConnection carries ultra-suede eye patches:

Or try the one-use stick on type in packs of 20 (band aid color):

Steve,

Wow! You and Mr. Google are an incredible resource!  ;D Like I said, you're posts are very informative.  ;) But seriously... who would have even thought of "Eye Patch Heaven"  ??? You haven't found a "tinnitus heaven" have you?  :D

I think that would be more of a "Tinnitus Heck".  Don't want to use the original word I was thinking for fear of forcing Phyl to stop eating her bon bons and relaxing with her feet on the desk to whack me with a virtual ruler.   :D

Aw, Jan... I feel your pain... :D

I guess all that ducking and weaving I've practiced in my years in the medical field have paid off!  Either that or Phyl is just not good at aiming!   ;)

I'd imagine that the drunken sailors will still need pirate patches, but now, thanks to Steve they'll be styling  ;)

eye patch heaven was looking good... but on holidays til Juy 8, in the mean time my Dad's wife managed to sew up 3 beige ones for me (covered the black ones with fabric and replaced the elastic with beige). I might ask her to make me one with flowers... i saw some cute ones on the website Steve mentioned.

THANKS!

Maybe your Dad's wife can start her own eyepatch business!  Who knew there was a need for such a thing, right?  Of course, she'll have to give me a small cut of the profits for coming up with the idea!   ;D

hey Lori...

not a bad idea... and this is exactly how the eye patch heaven lady got started! i think she is based in California (nice...) but we could probably use this kind of business in Canada! I certainly found NOTHING here...

Should I start sending you scraps??  Really, it could be VERY profittable because it wouldn't take much fabric, but you could still sell them at prices where you'd make some money!!

I ordered to patches from eye patch heaven - thanks Steve!
I will let you know what they are like when I get them. The black one is tight on me too (and my head is not particularly big) - I measured my head and ordered the right size.

hi Michelle,

Yes please let me know how the patches work out. I am really curious about the clear plastic straps... sounds good to me!

My head is not so big either but the black ones are so tight. they fit my neck better!

Hope you are doing well.

Hi Trish,
I got my eye patches yesterday and they are 'so stylin'. The clear plastic strap is very comfortable - measure your head and order the right size. She has a variety of great styles. Tons of fun. I wanted one with a big eye ball on it but she didn't have that. hehehe She also has a variety of different shapes - I ordered the triangle ones. You can also order your patch to go under glasses (they are flatter). I am happy I ordered them.
I don't have double vision (I hope that gets better for you soon Trish) but when my eye is tired and dry I put tons of lacilube in it, a piece of wet gauze or press and seal and put the patch over and try to forget it for a while.
Anyway let me know how it goes.
Good luck.

Michelle (and all)...

Thanks for the update on your patch order. I think i will order one or two (probably would have before but the lady who makes them was on holidays AND you have to use "paypal"... which i would have to figure out). Also, my dad's wife made me a few beige ones, but i am still thinking to order some... maybe they will be a little smaller, fit better, and be less conspicuous with the clear strap.

How long did it take to get them? Did you have to pay any customs or duty?

i am still having double vision. Will post a longer update on the forum now.

Thanks!

Trish

Hi Trish,
Paypalis fairly easy to use and the patches came within a week (I live in Canada and they came from the States) and no duty. I am wearing one now (my eye is tired). It is very comfortable.
Good luck.

Michelle,

Which size of patch did you order? I would like as small as possible, but obviously need it big enough to provide a "good seal" to protect eye.

Cheers!

Hi Trish,
I ordered the triangle ones (concave), you could go smaller and flatter (to be worn under glasses). I guess it depends whether you want you eye open underneath or not. I think if I order more I might go for a more flatter one because my eye is dry I want it to be closed when I wear mine so I give my eye a rest. I put a line of lacilube, wet piece of gauze and the patch.
If you look on the site she has all different shapes - the circle looks small.

Good luck, keep in touch.

I don't wear glasses (unless i get a presrcip for a prism lens to help with double vision) so flat patch is not an issue. I leave my eye open under patch, just taped at night. I assume you tape the gauze (sp?) on to keep eye from opening?

Thanks for thoughts on patches. Much appreciated.

Trish, I know you have double vision issues, do you also have dry eye as well? My eye gets dry tired and sore - I put Refresh Celluvisc drops in and they feel great but don't last long (I put them in every 15 minutes). When I get frustrated I put a line of lacilube in it and the wet gauze feels good and helps to keep the eye closed under the patch for a wee time out. If you keep your eye open the triangle ones will work well. Apparently I have big eyeballs and can't wait till my new weight comes to see if it will help. I responded to your weight questions under the mositure chamber thread.

Thanks Michelle,

My eye does not seem to dry out much. I use drops during the day, but sometimes ointment (as i was advised by opthamologist #2)...which makes my eye blurry but does not matter as i wear the patch (i sound like an ex-smoker here) for the double vision. I did use drops more in the first few weeks, but now 11 weeks out i can go for hours. I rarely feel like i "need" drops, but just try to keep up with them every few hours to be on the safe side. I will see the opthamologist again (for some testing of my DV) in early September so hoping she says my cornea is looking good despite the challenges.

Thanks again for sharing your experiences in eye patch heaven and to Steve for passing on this great site.

Trish
