Title: OMG16 having surgery
Post by: Kaybo on January 25, 2008, 05:26:44 pm
I spoke w/ OMG16 for quite some time on the phone this afternoon(what a wonderful & encouraging lady she is!!).  She is having surgery first thing Monday morning.  (It sounds pretty intense to me.)  I asked her if she was going to post it on here and she didn't want to since it is not for AN.  I told her I thought that people would want to know and be thinking of/praying for her.  She said that it would be OK if I did it, so I'm letting everyone know!!
Good Luck OMG16 -- you in my thoughts & prayers!

Wow.  Well, she certainly didn't let on that she had surgery coming up!  It is nice of her to be so supportive of everyone else when she clearly has a lot on her plate right now!

16 - speedy recovery to you!  You'll be in our prayers and we'll repay you all those kisses to the forehead!

We have a little tradition of putting our "pirate sox" on for anyone having a procedure done, so ours are on for you 16! I've got special ones with pink and black stripes--they even have matching evening gloves which I may have to don as well!  You have been such a source of inspiration for all of us here.  Best of luck to you and know we will all be thinking of you.

Be well and sail on!

Nancy thank you.  How are you doing?  I saw your post op pictures and you look great!  I was reading some old posts and I saw that you fight insurance companies for a living as do I.  We are work sisters!

Phyl I love your huggles and certainly enjoyed the smoochie.  I hope that you are doing well.

K you were right and I am enjoying all of the posts.  It is so heart warming and just knowing that my forum members are wishing me well makes it a little easier.

Captain Deb I have a visual of the evening gloves and pirate sox and I say wear them both.  I am experiencing some of the stress pre op that all of you have gone through.  I'm understand just a little more what it is like to have to make these decisions that can affect the quality of our lives post op.  I admire each of you more everyday!

Take care all of you and I will post after surgery when I can and will let you know what they ended up doing.   :-* 16

I just got a message from OMG16 -- she said that she is "OK," but that she won't know the results of the cultures & biopsies for about 2 weeks.  Let's continue to hope & pray that those come back clean.  She said that the pain is "better & easier to control now that she is not running a fever."  She is at home and "very tired,"  but at least she was able to write me on her own!  I'll try to keep you posted -- if she doesn't do it herself (she seems like a pretty strong lady to me!)!! :)

I though all of you deserved an update on my surgery.  The good new is that there is not any evidence of Cancer and I am feeling better everyday.  I am amazed at how tired I am still.  The surgeons removed about a 3cm piece of my facial bone that was the root of the infections and also took part of my sinus out.  We will not know for about another month if the surgery was a complete success.  They will keep me on antibiotic until then and do further testing.  I am no longer running the high fevers and other than soreness the pain is pretty much gone.  I do have an increase in pain when my sinuses fill up with blood but it is only a temperary situation and much easier to deal with than the pre surgical pain.  Please do keep up all of your prayers for a complete remission of the infection.  It is my understanding that I may have to fight this off and on for the rest of my life.  16

16 - I'm glad you got some good news!  It sure sounds like you and your family have just been dumped on lately!  It seems these life trials should be spread out among the population a little more evenly instead of putting a select few through it all!

I can tell you are a strong lady and you are a great role model for many others with the way you handle life's rough spots.

Here's to a smooth road ahead from now on - no more pot holes or detours!

Here is an update on my facial bone infection.  Last friday I had what I thought was the flu and boy do I wish it was.  Anyways my facial swelling, fever, night sweats and bone pain are back.  I have been off the antibiotics for 11 days now.  I called the surgeon today and was told by his nurse after her talking to him that he does not know why I am having problems again and that it could not be even happening so to go and see my primary care Dr because he can not help me.  He did not want to see me and the nurse had a very snotty attitude.  I also found out that the cultures were negative, however he did not send the bone that was mush (his words not mine) off for culture or the bone that he touched and it just turned to dust and fell apart.  Why would he not send the abnormal stuff for pathology and biopsy?  I am very angry and frustrated to say the least.

My primary care was out of the office until Monday so I saw the Dr filling in for him.  Thank goodness he was very kind and put me back on the antibiotics and made me an appt for Monday first thing to see my primary.  He could tell by looking at me with all of the swelling there was a problem that needed treatment.  He also said he would call my infectious disease Dr and talk to him and they made me an appt.  Unfortunately he is gone on Vacation until April 4th but he did say in his consultation report from 1st part of Feb. that he would want to do bone cultures of his own if it did come back.  I was told that the infectious disease Dr wants to rule out midline granuloma disease.  I'm thinking that Dentists/Oral surgeons who do the surgeries for the facial bones are way over their head on this one.

Anyways I need lots of kisses to my forehead and prayers for this one.  I am getting pretty tired of this and have had enough!  :'(  16

Wish I was there you take care of you like you always take care of others.  I know your family is probably taking good care of you.  I knew something must be wrong when I hadn't "heard" from you all week!

Sounds like we are having a rash of uncaring, insensitive Dr.'s on here these days!!  Another slap for another Dr.!!

Kisses to YOUR forehead!!

Oh my goodness - like you need this on top of everything else.  I hope the antibiotics help give you some relief and that your doctors can get to the bottom of this.

You're right - it doesn't make sense that they wouldn't biopsy the abnormal appearing bone.  I'd ask him what his reasoning was behind that decision.

Hang in there and know we're thinking about you!

Hey!  How are you feeling?
Here we in Colorado!  The girls did well today and so did I!!  Really, this was the 1st time I have really skied since the AN surgery/stroke (we tried about a year after, but I was pregnant and got super sick b/c I was miscarrying - not much skiing!!).  The balance thing wasn't too bad except when I tried to use one foot to try to stomp on the other binding (& still had one ski on) - I kind of went flying!  WHEEEEEEE!!!
Hope you are better -- I will try to call when I get home Monday!

Here is an update on my Drs appt today I saw the infectious disease Dr and he agrees that there is quite an infection going on and I need to see at least one surgeon and get there opinion and he will work with them to clear it up.  So I see the surgeon on Monday morning in the mean time he has taken me off of all antibiotic, tylenol and advil.  He says that they want to get a true culture this time so the antibiotic will mask that.  He also wants me taking my temp 4 times a day to see exactly where it is with no tylenol or advil.  He also said that I looked sick and that it looked like I did not have good control of the pain.  I explained to him that I still need to work and can not drive if I take the pain medication and it makes me very sick and I sometimes vomit.  So he said to take the pain medication 2 every 4 hours around the clock and to take an antinausea med along with it through the weekend and see if I can not get the pain under control.  I did not know that your heart rate, BP and the color of your face actually shows when your pain is not under control.  I learned something today and I thought I already knew everything (lol).  Oh and if my temp goes up over 101.5 then I am supposed to call and I believe they will put me in the hospital.  That is the last thing I want as bad things happen in the hospital in my experience and that is no place for a sick person (lol).  Boy I sure am amusing myself tonight.

If everyone can keep up the prayers I would greatly appreciate it.  Pray that they can do a culture and get good results this time and remove the right area of the bone that is bad.  I guess they removed the wrong bone!  How frustrating, but I am not angry anymore and I know that everyone has done the best to their ability.

Thank you everyone for your unconditional support you have showed me and my Family.  I have a very special place in my heart for each and every one of you.  I just love you guys.  :-* 16

"If everyone can keep up the prayers I would greatly appreciate it."   Done. Goes without saying.

I'm glad to hear that the specialist is taking the situation seriously.  It makes sense that he would want no antibiotics and no tylenol, so he can get a true reading on what is going on. In sincerely hope you can hold on through the weekend and get the pain under control; if the doctor could see in in your face, it must be pretty bad. Drink lots of water, I hope your temperature stays below 101.5.

They are bound to get this thing sorted out one of these days, and you have gone through so much now, you have to see it through. It must be so frustrating for you, I really can't imagine how you do it. Just think how strong a person you will be when it is finally over. And think about your son, he will inspire you to persevere.

Always all the best, 16.

Steve

Well OMG, they'll finally get to the bottom of this.
I hope the pain med with zantac or whatever stomach protector you're on will prevent the nausea/vomiting.

I'm so sorry you're going thru this.    Did the doc say how long you have to wait before they can do the culture/sensitivity ?

Ditto Steve, it's a given - you're in my thoughts & prayers.

Praying for continued safe care & healing...      Nancy

Steve you are right I have been through allot the last 3 years and I am insisting on building more character everyday.  Actually I think I have built enough character to last the rest of my life.  You know I just noticed writing this that none of us remember the 3 year anniversary of my son stroke this year.  It is usually a very emotional week or so and can you believe all of us forgot!  I think our healing is almost complete at least our emotional healing.  When I'm feeling sorry for myself I just get online here and read posts from all of my friends and I feel better and can continue the fight.  Of course I always look at the get well card you made me which I must say touched my heart more than you could ever know.  Thank you just doesn't seem to be enough but that is all I have to offer.   :-* 16

Nancy the medications are helping thank goodness.  Being off of the antibiotic for about 1 week should be enough they believe anyways.  So I can make it another 6 days, I've made it this far so that should be a piece of cake.  Speaking of cake when this is all behind me we will have to have a cyber party with a big huge white cake.  Thank you for your response I am always happy to hear from you!  :-* 16

Hello All~
I just got an e-mail from 16 and it does not sound good.  I am going to quote part of her e-mail so I don't get it wrong!  I think that we knew that she was going to be taking pain killers to try to control the pain better and get off the antibiotic so it would not mask the infection...here is some of what she wrote:

"Little did I know they wanted me to build a tolerance to it (Percocet) so they could put me on oxycontin & it would not kill me (omg).  When the Dr. told me to take the oxy 3 times/day I freaked out & said that I was not going to take that stuff!  He said it was either that or morphine extended release.  I told him I thought that was for cancer end stage treatment & he agreed that it was used for that however my bone is being eroded slowly by what is happening & is just as painful as end stage cancer..."

They are having trouble getting her back in w/ the doc at UW where she went before - he doesn't have any openings until June.  Apparently, all the different Dr.'s are getting together to discuss her case and are going to see if they can get her in sooner.

She asked that we continue to keep her in our prayers...they have been thru so much & I know it doesn't help that she doesn't want to be on anything so that she can better care for her son!!

I will try to keep up the updates as I get them!
K

Hello All!
Just an update on OMG 16 -- she has been taking the pain medicine and it is not making her sick (YEA!) just sleep a lot.  However, her temp has gone up.  They had said that if this happened she WOULD have to go into the hospital.  They gave her a script for antibiotic if that happened (not sure if she could do 1 or the other) but she started taking that b/c she felt she was just too weak to get to the hospital AND she just doesn't want to go.  The temp seems to be slowly coming down. Apparently, she now has a secondary infection also.

The Dr. at UW is supposed to be back in the office tomorrow so hopefully she can get the surgery done soon!!

That's what I know right now!

A secondary infection on top of everything else. When it rains, it pours....or storms.  I am glad she can tolerate the pain meds w/o getting her sick.

Thank you for the update on OMG.  Again, my thoughts go out to her as well.

I'm sorry...I talked to her yesterday and was going to post, but by the time the girlies were off the computer, I was pooped and then hooked up to the IV!  I had been trying to call her b/c I was worried, but got no answer.  She finally called back yesterday...understandably, she is sleeping a lot and trying to work when able.  She had seen her PCP yesterday and is to see I surgeon (oral, I think) Friday.  It still sounds like no one is taking control -- there needs to be 2 or 3 DIFFERENT surgeons that need to coordinate on the surgery and that just really isn't happening.  All in all it is just a very frustrating situation.  I think she is starting antibiotic again next week...She is supposed to call me after the appointment on Friday.

Pray that something can be done...SOON!!!

I want to Thank each one of you for your kind words, prayers, thoughts and well wishes.  I do not know what I would do without my new friends/family.  i Love You Guys!

Now for the update.  The surgeon I saw today took charge and has a treatment plan he is putting in place.  Thank goodness it is about time.  As my primary care Dr said on Wednesday this is not considered an emergency because it is not cancer and I am not septic yet.  I may feel like I am going to die however I have been put on the back burner long enough and the surgeon, infectious disease Dr and my primary have all agreed that this was not acceptable and if no one took charge after yesterdays appt they would make some calls and end this waiting and finger pointing that has been going on the last 6 or 8 weeks.  The 2 surgeons at the UW were each pointing to the other saying that the other one needed to do surgery when actually they both need to do surgery.  OK enough whining and my official diagnosis is osteomyelitis of about half the entire maxillary bone and that is why my nose and my eye hurt on that side.  The intense bone pain is what is the worse I can not tolerate that at all.  It makes me feel like a whining baby, but ouch.  I don't know if any of you have had a dry socket after an extraction but that is what it feels like 24/7.  The osteomyelitis has caused a hole in my sinus and is eroding my bone slowly.  The hole in my sinus is draining pus and is causing secondary bacterial infections in my sinus, throat and lungs.  It is also my understanding that my sinus is not working well and is not draining except when it finally gets so bad and backed up that it just kind of leaks some of the grossness out.  I had been off of the antibiotics per the infectious disease Dr so that when I could get surgery scheduled they could get a better culture and hopefully get the right antibiotic in the right amounts to finally clear this up.  Well I ended up after only a week off getting another secondary bacterial infection and had to go on the antibiotics again and I am to stay on them now until a week before surgery.  The treatment plan is to have hyperbaric oxygen therapy 3 hours a day 5 days a week for about 6 weeks.  Sinus surgery to open up and make a really big hole in the side of my sinus about 1cm.  I will also start IV antibiotics (I believe the infectious disease Dr will make the final call) and will be on the antibiotic for about 4 months or possibly longer.  I will not have surgery on the bone yet as the surgeon wants to have me start the oxygen therapy first and re-vascularize the area first.  As the surgeon said this therapy wil not get rid of the infected bone but it will make it worse and he believes the marginal bone and bone that is extremely swollen could actually get better.  By doing this he will be able to tell exactly where the infection is hopefully then he can remove 3-4mm of the bone instead of right now all they can see on the CT is an area the size of a golf ball that goes from my nose to mid way between my ear and nose and from my lip to midway up to my eye.  He already removed part of the bone with the last surgery in Jan. but left as much as he possibly could to stabilize that area of bone.  He also said at anytime during this treatment we could change it if needed and just remove all that bone but you can not put it back once you take it out and he wants to be 100% sure before he goes to this extreme.  The surgeon did say again that he could not reconstruct this area because the infection can seed itself in small areas in the good bone that would be needed to anchor the bone grafts, pins screws and what not.  This would cause the new bone to get infected he said right away and they would then have to take out more bone.  That would create a big sunken area in my mid face and I would not be able to eat.  So I definately do not want that.  So if you all can keep up your prayers for removal of a small area of bone and the cure of the infection.  Oh I almost forgot he said that I will have to probably have multiple surgeries during and after oxygen therapy to take out the small areas of bone (I hope small anyways) that show up as infection which he believes will not take to long after starting therapy.  Also he wants me on the antibiotic even though it wil not cure the infection without surgeries to clean up the infected bone because he does not want me to become septic which of course can be fatal.  I will need to stay on the heavy duty pain medication for the next few months at least as I will still have the bone infection and that is what is causing this extreme pain.  He said that was fine and not to worry about it they will wean me off when they think all is gone.  I hate taking it and I am still worried about it but I have to listen to my Drs on this one.  I was having physical symptoms of untreated pain and my infectious disease and ENT surgeon called my primary and told him I was under treating the pain and they thought it was best to treat the pain as you do not heal as quickly or as well if that is the case..........or so they told me anyways.  What do all of you think about this?

I have a very positive attitude.  I feel good about the treatment plan and I also feel at peace with it so I know it is the right thing to do.  I can not wait to have no more fevers, drenching night sweats, nausea, vomiting, infection type headache (Kay you know what I am talking about), fatigue, no appetite, facial swelling, one black eye (they say that is from the infection, weird huh) and last but not least pain.  I can and will get through this with the help of all of my new friends!

Thank you again my friends I couldn't do this without you.  :-* 16

PS My wonderful husband set up a trip for the 2 of us alone to go to Palm Springs leaving May 1st and returning on May 11th or 12th.  He put together the whole trip by himself to surprise me and has someone to watch the dogs and my wonderful son and cleared it with my boss.  How awesome is that?  I'm one lucky wife if I don't say so myself.  He had to tell me because of everything going on with my health.  He called our friends that we stay with (they are more like family) and told them about my health problems and so nothing is planned and I can nap anytime and they will take very good care of me.  I will have my pillows fluffed and lots of forehead kisses.  The surgeon knows about this and said that would be perfect as he will be gone part of the time but they need to get everything pre certified and the oxygen therapy can be tough with some insurance companies but osteomyelitis it is a known and approved treatment for.

Hi OMG:   Whew, what a time you are having.....     I'm glad to hear the docs are finally working together on this.   Glad you're back on antibiotics - are they giving you intravenous or by mouth ?   I wouldn't worry about the pain meds - it's best to keep stress down as much as possible & being in pain puts alot of stress on the body.

Your husband is doing a wonderful thing arranging the getaway for the 2 of you (another de-stressor) !

You are in my thoughts & prayers.   Continued healing my friend.

Always good thoughts,    Nancy

OMG16:

Allow me to add my voice to the 'AN chorus' (your friends here) that wish you a successful treatment and a soothing , relaxing vacation in beautiful Palm Springs.

You've been through a lot and still have a few miles to go but with your upbeat attitude and the solid support you clearly have from your family, especially your caring husband (who set up the vacation in Palm Springs) I'm sure you'll get through this O.K.

Know that you're in my prayers and those of many others here and if positive vibes were tangible, you would be tingling right about now.  ;)

Stay strong.  :)

Jim

Boy, you have been having a bad time of it.  Good for you for having such a positive attitude; not easy in light of everything that's been going on.

I'm hopeful that you are now on the "right path" and well on the way to recovery.

You are so lucky to have such a wonderful, thoughtful husband.  Enjoy your mini vacation.

We're all thinking about you and wishing you the best,

Jan

Gracious, what an elaborate diagnosis and treatment plan! It is wonderful to hear from you, despite all the pain and misery, I can tell your spirits have brightened up. It surely does not sound like a good thing to have, but it does sound like the end is in sight, and that you have a good plan for treating it.

The vacation is a brilliant idea, I particularly like the idea of napping in balmy Palm Springs every afternoon. I wonder if I can sling a hammock in my office at work?  :D

Joy is in your heart, OMG, I can just tell, and they can't take that away from you. Have a nice quiet time on vacation, and best of health to you in the future.

Brenda you are right my infectious disease Dr vacations in Palm Springs also and he said it would be a very good idea as I can nap anywhere.

Nancy they are giving me oral antibiotic now however yesterday and today my fever is running up to 100.5 which it usually doesn't do with the antibiotics so we will see.

Jersey you are absolutely right Palm Springs is wonderful and we try to go at least 2 times a year.  We were supposed to go in Jan. for the Bob Hope Classic, we had VIP tickets so we could go anywhere.  I was so excited and so was my son he got them for his birthday in Oct from our family friends we stay with when we go.  The youngest boy of the Family is the Pro at the Golf Course that they hold the classic at.  I knew when he was 6 and I was 16 and I stayed home from school to take care of him when he had chicken pox that it would eventually turn out to be a good thing (LOL).  We had to cancel that vistit as I was to sick with the infection and had to have surgery 10 days later and they did not want me going out of town.

Jim I always love to hear from you!  You have such a great way of saying everything.  I can feel the love from the forum members and I am tingling right now.  Thank you for all your well wishes.

Thank you Jan.  I know I'm on the right path now it could just takes months to carry out all of the treatment plan so I must be patient and keep my good attitude and that has been hard.

Lori thank you and I will enjoy every minute of my vacation with my wonderful husband who I thank the lord everyday for.  I'm sure my vacation while sick will be more relaxing than your current trip to the in-laws.  The zoo in an hour....wow.......I'm having a visual of you running like a lunatic holding your childrens hand and them flying with their feet off of the ground.  ;D

Wow who was that who gave me a run by huggle and kisses?  Did anyone catch that?  She was just a blur.

Steve I think you know how much I appreciate you!  When this first started back up I was very angry and frustrated and the treatment and brush off I got at first was to much for me to take.  I'm just very glad it was only one of 6 Drs treating this.  I usually always have a positive attitude because you can not change how your feeling health wise all you can do is change the way you react to the situation and I believe that I have control to change a very bad situation into a situation that you can and will live with to the best of your ability.  If I was sad and depressed all the time I would be robbing myself and my family from the life that I have now and for some time to come and then we would all lose very precious time together.  With our life the way it has been over the last several years this is one of the most important things I have learned.  I thank God everyday for this lesson because we do have a wonderful life full of love.  I think you should hang a hammock in your office and have a drink with an umbrella.  Be sure to take a picture and send it to me through the PM.  That would make me laugh and I think the Dr has ordered that also.  So you would be helping me to get better, it would be medicinal and that is what you can tell your boss or anyone else that questions you.

Love to all of you.   :-* 16  :-*

Hello All~

I spoke to 16 on the phone yesterday and she sounds good even though she has been through the ringer and is still recovering.  They sent off from the surgery and the cultures came back positive for 3 different bacterial infections!!  No wonder she is still having horrible fevers and trouble!!  She was to start IV's either yesterday or today - YES, she, too, is joining the elete PICC club.  However, she said she was very glad to so that maybe this can be cleared up once & for all!!
Just wanted to let everyone know - I know she has been missed!!   :-*
